Wichita area here. Just got a call/email from the Andover School District all after school activities are cancelled. We pick up our oldest at 3:45. Looks like he'll be home for about and hour before it gets bad.

@Sevenator

yea, it's pegged, could even be higher if the scale went higher.

College of DuPage (COD) factors this in

Max STP of 13.9

Remember there was no such thing as an F5 tornado either, till May 3, 1999. Scale went to 4, but Oklahoma decided to break through the wall on that scale as well. Hit my HS my Sr year. I was at home watching it, was a mile from my house to the SW. Lifted, touched down less than a mile east of me.

It's not often we get gulf moisture this far north.
Stay safe down there, it looks like it could be a rough afternoon/ evening for you guys.

As a sidenote, we drove through Sulfur, OK on the way back from the eclipse and my wife thought that it was one of the prettiest towns we saw on our trip.
So much so, she said that maybe we should retire there and was looking on Zillow at houses there. Then the storms hit later. I was impressed by the local leadership during their press conference. It was nice to see some competency displayed on TV and the obvious outpouring of local help to the town. Neighbors helping neighbors, as it should be.

I remember traveling the turnpike after that one.  Around the Stroud mall you could really see the scars on the land where the tornado moved through.

Did you mean F6?  There have been plenty of F5s prior to that one.

5/3/1999 was an F5. There will never be an F6 mainly because the scale is a damage scale and F6 damage would be indistinguishable from F5 damage.

The world transitioned from the F scale to the EF scale in the early 2000s.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhanced_Fujita_scale

Still just to EF5, becomes pointless after that.

To be expected given the amount of warning. Let's just hope they don't all get themselves in trouble and crowd a small dirt road in the path of a tornado again like some did a few weeks prior.

Sounds like it's going to be an afternoon into the night kind of thing. That's been the pattern for the past few storms in that area. Also allows for a lot of heat and moisture to collect in the morning and early afternoon.

It is sad and sobering to think that there are folks alive now getting off work in the next couple of hours who will be killed by a tornado today, but they don't even know it yet.

Odds are, if anything gets wiped out it will in Moore OK.
If I were in the insurance business, I would not insure anyone for Tornado damage in Moore.

A cap keeps the disparate layers from mixing and would prevent an outbreak. It weakening could be getting close to spicy time unless it weakened before the potential instability built but I don't think that's the case.
