The regular Apple 2 meter braided ones are fine unless you actually need it for connecting thunderbolt devices.

I bought a couple from amazon with a braided jacket and a right-angle connector, the right angle connector makes a huge difference.

Charging and syncing data? Get a name brand (Anker, Ugreen, Apple, Belkin). Make sure it's both a "charge" and "sync".

if charging a laptop or larger tablet.. you want a cable that says "PD" or Power Delivery.

It's fun watching you close the loop on exactly why Apple has kept lightening connectors for so long,
USB is a hot mess. Mainly because intel could not decide on what they wanted it to be.

as someone said above the best way to make sure is to just get a thunderbolt cable but the average person doesn't need thunderbolt for their daily use.. but unfortunately it's the only way to guarantee that the cable will perform no matter the use.

I'll have to try those. I go through a ridiculous number of cables. Probably due to constant travel, in and out of bags all the time.

Buy multiple ankers and leave one plugged in everywhere you intend to charge. If you aren't constantly moving a single one around all the time and manhandling it, they should all last a very long time.

Um.. yes.  yes it is.

It's completely F'ing ridiculous.  Let's ponder - what Margin is on that?  What is the COGS, behind that cable?

What particular raw materials from rare asteroids orbiting Venus, were utilized in this manufacturing process, for this 11-wire data cable?  What exotic intelligent microbots were used to gold-weld the palladium platinum gold ingot mass level wire connections used, for this data cable?

Not having bothered to click the link, refactor the math and include the circuitry that you can't see and the QA/QC resulting in certification.

It's the same price as anker. You get what you pay for. People buy cheap chargers and cables, and they either break quick at best, or they die in a house fire at worst.

It also means you aren't putting too much force on the socket; if you have a dog with a Tail of Doom, this can really extend the life of your devices by not breaking the only way to charge them. Also, depending on the cable maker, you can find device-side adapters that will allow Mac, USB micro, and USB c to all charge using one cable. That's nice if you have a mix of devices. (I have a work iPhone and the rest of the household uses Android, for instance.)

There are a couple of downsides to the mag connectors. There's no standard, and companies come and go, so it's a crapshoot if they'll be around when you need replacements. It basically is a new cable standard so you can easily wind up going all-in ... which means buying enough new cables to replace everything. When (not if) dirt, lint, etc gets into the adapter the cable can "look" good connection wise, but be charging at low speed or not at all. Cleaning them out can be a pain. Do NOT use these if you have a job or hobby that produces fine iron or steel particles, as they will get picked up by the magnetic tips or ports, and can short things out. The contacts will also wear, so eventually they will die too.

In the end, I use them and am a big fan. But there are downsides.

As to death in house fires - man I tell you, all I do is go from funeral to funeral of all the millions of people dying in related house fires.  It's just a constant non-stop, and part of the reason the USA is doing illegal immigration to replace all the dead people from cheap cable fatalities.

I'll do you one better.

we regularly have 7-10 laptops on the bench at the same time using usb-c power and data cables.  we got tired of trying to keep track of which Apple cable was properly rated for 87w, or 96w power adapters (until a year or so ago, they actually had DIFFERENT cables rated for each wattage) so fuck that shit.

bought a pile of 18" OWC 100w rated, Thunderbolt 4 rated, cables from macsales.com and have not looked back.  no issues.  I think we hit 8 in use at one time today.

you get what you pay for.

you want to charge a phone from a 10w power adapter?  hell, a couple trash bag wire ties will probably work.  want to do data transfer at tb4 speeds from one Mac to another?  you're going to need a better cable.  40gbps.  yes, we see those speeds.

current Apple USB-C/MagSafe cables are expensive but rated for full power - 140W.  we have to have those on hand because we have to test the 16" laptops with full power 140W adapters and cables.  there is no way in hell we are going to use a third party cable for high power charging.  we have actually seen a laptop destroyed by a third party charger and cable.

I personally keep at least 2 nib Apple usb-c to lightning cables at home as well as usb-c charge cables.  She Who Is All is hard on equipment.  the power adapters seem to be surviving, but the cables are consumables.

In for all the amazon links that will show up for third party sellers whos addresses are all in chinese characters.

Sure Apple makes their product in China and charges a premium to carry the Apple name, but at least you are getting true specs and QC.

I only buy Syncwire. An old cellphone of mine (micro usb) would not charge with any other cable. I was ready to take it apart and try to replace the port but tried Syncwire because of the reviews. Got another year out of that phone and it still would charge when I dumped it. First thing I did after getting this phone (USB-C) was to buy a few of their cables. One in each vehicle, home, work, etc.

ETA: currently unavailable. Guessing it's the same as or equivalent to Anker.

So I didn’t have time before to look at what I bought but i checked today and it’s not the 240. I’ll check 240 pricing at NEX next time out of curiosity to see the difference and I realized the $17.50 is for a Apple lightening cable not C to C

It's worth consideration even if it's not common. More importantly, like I said, you buy that cheap ching ching chong bullshit, and it breaks quickly. It's worth it to pay more up front for something that'll last. Given that you consider Temu to be a viable shopping option to begin with though, we're probably going to fundamentally disagree on this.

This will work just fine for everything up to the MacBook Air. Honestly, Apple doesn't make a product that uses 240w PD.

For anything you're likely to use it for right now this is fine. It may even be OK for the lower end 14" MBP
