Au contraire, mon frère. I would say that this may be true of the stuff licensed in America, but it is probably the other way around for the totality of anime.

What percentage of the shit that is released in Japan is actually anime adaptations of H-games? Or dating-sims?

I don't even know what all is licensed in the USA I get all my stuff straight from Japan.  Often only days after it has aired.  I'm a purist so subtitles until I finish Japanese lessons and don't need them anymore. SO I was referring to all anime.  AND just because it was adapted from an H game or dating sim does not necessarily make it a Hentai.  For example Air was a H game. It is not a Hentai as an anime.  It isn't even ecchi.

Saying (and I know you aren't saying this) all anime is perverted Is like saying All American tv is perverted.  Sure there is live action pay per view porn on tv. sure this the same thing with hentai. sure there are dedicated stores selling only live action porn, same for hentai.

My point is people usually hear about the nasty side of anime first and assume that it is all like that.  It isn't.

I totally get your point. My point is that for every Air and KGNE, there are other H-game adaptations that are just vehicles for fan-service. Once you are into anime, you stop noticing the fan-service aspects of most shows (low camera angles, obnoxious moe characters, random panty shots) because they are so prevalent. You have to really push yourself to get past that crap and realize that it is there due to the prurient nature of Japanese men.

This is the reason most people can't get into it or call it "porn."

I actually like inuyasha... at 4 am when the History channel has gone to infomercial...

The action is contrived and the women are nearly all dumb, shrill, vain and annoying.  Shirow rules but the rest sucks.

This may be going against the crowd here but I didn't like GITS or Eva.
There was a lot of good stuff there but the ending of Eva was just too cracked out.  It should have just been a straight forward mecha anime but the creator wanted to make it into something more than it was.

GITS 2,  That one pissed me off.  I like that movie when it was called Blade Runner.

So in conlusion read the BERSERK manga because it is the greatest thing ever made.

I'm glad to see that someone finally mentioned Witch Hunter Robin.  Rather than echo all the usual choices, I'll try and point out a few that have been overlooked so far:

Niea under 7 - the aliens have landed and have made themselves at home on earth.  One poor student named Mayuka, who is supporting herself through school by living and working in a bath house, finds an alien named Niea has decided to take up residence in her closet.   This irks Mayuka because Niea is extremely lazy, eats all Mayuka's food, and won't clean up her own mess.  Plus Niea has the bad habit of destroying stuff - like the time she builds a flying saucer in Mayuka's room (out of junk she collected on one of her late night raids of the local trash dump) in the hopes of selling it for cash.  Mayuka laughed and told Niea it would never fly, so Niea proceeds to power it up and take off, smashing through the roof in Mayuka's room.  Of course the flight only lasts until the extension cords pull out, and the saucer crashes to the ground.  Unfortunately for Mayuka, the bath house can't afford to repair the roof, and Mayuka is now stuck enduring the rainy season with nothing but a leaky tarp over the large hole.  The other aliens don't really like Niea, either.  A weird, quirky comedy.

Noir - nobody knows the identity the famous assassin that goes by the name Noir, or that "he" is actually a woman.  One day a young girl shows up knowing far too much about Noir and with an interesting set of skills.  Noir and the girl form an uneasy alliance but never really trust each other.  Lots of cool action and gunplay.

Angelic Layer - A girl named Misaki who is searching for her mother discovers a game called Angelic Layer where you build these small dolls - "Angels" - to your own specifications that come to life once on the "layer" by controlling them with your mind and they fight.  The story follows Misaki through contests and tournaments as she competes.  But what she doesn't know is her mother is somehow conected with the game and if she keeps winning then she may finally end up meeting her mother on the layer.  Really more of a kids show, but interesting nonetheless.

Martian Successor Nadesico - the Mars colony is attacked by the Jovians (that's people from Jupiter) and the military forces of Earth are building up to retaliate.  One private warship - Nadesico - is launched first.  It turns out the the Jovians worship an old Earth giant robot series called Gekiganger so one of the Nadesico's crew (who happens to be a Gekiganger/anime/giant robot geek) comes in handy dealing with them.  A lot of funny day-to-day goings on, typical convoluted love triangles, and serious parodies of giant robot and anime fanboys.  The mid-season "recap" show turns the tables and is actually a Gekiganger episode where the characters recap and criticize Nadesico.  Weird and funny, with a few serious moments thrown in.

And finally, without a doubt the weirdest anime I have ever seen in my life, The Ping Pong Club - I don't even know where to start with this one.  Talk about low-brow, bathroom humor, "The Ping Pong Club" makes "Porky's" and "American Pie" look like "Gone With The Wind!!!"  It has to bee seen to be believed.  See it.

Tax,
I think you would enjoy Ghost In The Shell and Appleseed.  If it were live-action people would be all over it.  It's very well done cinema, and there are things it conveys that you would not see in a "movie".  Some of it sucks badly, but many of the recommendations posted here have been cream of the crop.

Check some out, you might like it.

ETA:  Some of it is enhanced chemically, if you know what I mean, and there would be no better viewpoint than a massive ammo fort.

For me, Anime leaves room for your imagination to fill in, or even run away.  A "movie" jams all that crap at you, expecting you to eat it, no matter how bad.

Your imagination may vary.

HERESY!!! We must burn the heretic

Did you ever watch End of Eva? A lot of people in Japan hated the orginal ending so much they send Anno death treats.

Anno's response was to make the "alternate ending" of End of Eva.
End of Eva is making a deal with the devil though. We get what we want, but it goes so wrong. .

I still think that some of the anime (GITS2, AKIRA, EVA) is kinda pretentious and convoluted.  I try to stick to action and fantasy and sometimes a comedy.  I'm watching something called "Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" right now.

Has anyone mentioned Lodoss War or Gundam 0083?

I watched End of EVA in Japanese and the English Dub.  It pissed me off.  I really wanted to like it but it just such a crappy ending for me.  After I watch 26 episodes and a movie it ends with the characters turning into orange goo.

Nowadays, I don't watch Anime anymore because I can't understand it... it's gotten more and more cheap/cheasy, and can't find anime with the same gravitas and artistic integrity as the above listed anime. If you know of series of equal AAA caliber... tell me!

Other than that i've got about 5 gigs of H-Anime. Thank you rapidshare!

Another anime geek here. I generally prefer the art style of the more recent series so my collection is mostly from series released in the last 4 - 5 years with a few older series. I only got into anime from manga/comics, and it was Appleseed that really got me into manga in the first place. I actually prefer manga rather than anime.

Here are a couple of movies that haven't been mentioned yet that I like.

Millenium Actress. An ex employee of a defunct movie studio tracks down the studio's retired and reclusive star actress to make a documentory about the studio and the actress' career.

Tokyo Godfathers. A group of three homeless people find an abandoned baby and try to track down the child's parents. In the process they reevaluate the reasons why they became homeless in the first place.

At the moment I'm collecting Full Metal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic - Second Raid and Ah My Goddess for anime and Oh My Goddess, I''s, and High School Girls in Manga.

Full Metal Alchemist. Two young brothers dabble in forbidden alchemy to bring their dead mother back to life but it goes horribly wrong. Now they are looking for the Philospher's Stone in the hope that they can use it to reverse the effects of their failed alchemy, but they're not the only people looking for it. Drama with some comedy.

Full Metal Panic. Sousuke Sagara is a member of a secret mercinary group called Mithril that fights international crime syndicates. He's been assigned the duty of bodyguard to highschool girl Kaname Chidori who has an unusual talent of intuitively understanding highly advanced technology and is a target for kidnapping by said crime syndicates. Sousuke grew up in a country in civil war and was recruited as a child soldier. As such he's never had a normal teenage life and his everyday social skills are somewhat lacking. He tends to use extreme measures in everyday situations. A drama/comedy with mecha.

Oh/Ah My Goddess (manga and anime). Keichi Morisato dials a wrong number on a phone and the call is answered by the Goddess Assistance Office. The goddess Belldandy visits Keichi in person and offers him one wish. Keichi thinks this is a prank set up by his friends. Keichi asks Belldandy to be his girlfriend, trying to expose the prank when he expects Belldandy to refuse. The joke is on Keichi, the wish is granted and now he has a goddess for a girlfriend, but his life becomes a lot more complicated as a result. Comedy (this series is "Bewitched" done right).

I''s (manga). A manga by Masakazu Katsura who also wrote Video Girl Ai. Described in two words: Teenage angst.

High School Girls (manga). Very similar to Azumanga Daioh but with more depth and not as cutesy. About a group of clueless misfits at an all girl's highschool. Comedy.

Another anime series worth mentioning. G.T.O. Great Teacher Onizuka. Social misfit and one time leader of a notorious gang, Onizuka graduated (barely) from a second rate college and doesn't know what to do with his life. He eventually decides to try teaching, expecting that he will be able to meet highly impressionable cute schoolgirls in the process. The realities of teaching are not what he expected at all. Drama/comedy (a live action version of this has also been made in Japan. While anime for the most part isn't widely followed by the mainstram public in japan, GTO is probably one of the most widely known series among the general public in Japan).

I am not a huge Anime fan but I will watch it occasionally.

Trigun is hands-down my all time favorite. Starts out goofy but then the stellar writing comes out.  Writing makes or breaks a story, folks.  "Why is my cross so heavy? Because it's full of mercy!"  5/5 stars.

Samurai 7 (an adaptation of the Seven Samurai) had a big act to follow and I didn't particularly care for the whole "robot bandit" part.  That said, still a decent story.  3/5 stars.

Cowboy Bebop, already mentioned.  4/5 stars.

Samurai Champloo, also already mentioned 3/5 stars.  Could have done without the hip hop aspect but otherwise writing was decent.

Ghost in the Shell is good too.  3/5 stars.

I didn't like Evangelion (really trippy towards the end).  Other anime titles just suffer too much from anime cliches (e.g. Samurai X/Kenshin, Bubblegum Crisis).  Never cared much for DBZ either.

But I'll have to check out some of the others mentioned in this thread.

And bonus points for realistic weapons.

Sgt. Sagara is a straight up tacticool operator.  In FMP fumoffu he tries to solve all the high school problems with guns and military equipment.  He detonates explosives in Chidori's locker,  Draws down on about have the characters in the show, and shoots a ton of people with rubber bullets.

He's a role model.

It's just the way their professional artists tend to draw faces.  The big eyes make it easier to show emotion, or something like that.  Supposedly they borrowed it from Disney after the war.

I never thought that anime characters looked especially white, either.  Nobody has eyes that big.

I don't think most of it is intended for an audience outside Japan, except maybe some of Hayao Miyazaki's films.

It has been up on the torrent sites for a while. I'm sure that it was a rip from the R2 DVD that has already been released.

Don't bother, tho. It will be shown on June 11th on SciFi.

I couldn't find any fan subs with quality good enough to be worth the spoilers.

I found a torrent but, I might just catch it on SciFi.

I was all hyped up for the July release and I'm surprised that it's coming out so early on TV...

I just saw the first episode of Hellsing Ultimate.

The original tv show introduced the series better. The first episode of Hellsing Ultimate is the length of two episodes from the original series, and condensed the first several episodes of the original tv series and the manga into one single episode. I'd recommend watching the first episode of the tv series before the OVA, just to get a better introduction.

Plus, you get Alucard's badass speech to the vampire masquerading as a priest.

On with my review of the first OVA episode. This one has a lot more gun porn in it. And Father Alexander Anderson is even more badass than in the tv show, if that's even possible. They have the same voice actors that they had in the original series, but the guy they have playing Anderson really toned it down a lot. He doesn't have the total psychopath/religious fanatic thing going nearly as well as he did before.

The music isn't as good as the original series, either. The tv series had that whole funky pop jazz/rock thing going with a little orchestral added in for dramatic emphasis. The music for the OVA just doesn't do much for me.

That said, when it stopped rushing itself to condense several episodes of the tv series/several issues of the manga into one episode, it was pretty good. Much closer to the manga than the original series (which went off in a totally unrelated direction after episode seven), the animation is better (especially the guns), and it still manages to keep the quirky Hellsing feel of both the tv series and the manga. I think only the first three episodes are out currently. I fully intend to watch the series all the way through, if only to see the invasion of London by nazi vampires and the coolest werewolf in existence.

And now, some Hellsing pr0n from the original tv series and the manga:

"Slay tha' heretics!"

"My warhead shall make no distinction between riffraff."
And when you have a musket that shoots magic bullets that can shoot down multiple fighter jets with a single shot, you don't need to make any distinctions.

"Prepare yourself for an eternity in hell. When you get there, I hope you lick the devil's ass!"

"Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name..."

"In the name of God, impure souls of the living dead shall be banished into eternal damnation. Amen."

".............."

And of course, the Major's infamous speech to his troops:

"Gentlemen, I like war.
Gentlemen, I like war.
Gentlemen, I love war!
I like genocide
I like blitzkrieg
I like aggressive war
I like defensive war
I like sieges
I like breaking through
I like withdrawing
I like cleaning up
I like retreating
In moors
On highways
In trenches
In plains
On tundra
In desert
On sea
In sky
In mud
In marshes
I love every aspect of war that takes place on this earth. I like
blowing away the enemy with the thunderous roar of a line of guns
going off all at once. When an enemy is shot to pieces after being
thrown high into the air, my heart dances. I like crushing the enemy
tank with the 88 mm on our tanks. When I mowed down the enemy who fled
screaming from the burning tank with an MG, my heart leapt. I like it
when the infantry plow through the enemy's lines with their bayonets
all in line. I remember being moved when seeing new recruits, filled
with panic, stabbing an already dead enemy again and again. Seeing an
escapee being strung from a lamp post in the street is unendurably
exciting. Seeing a captive be thrown down with a piercing shriek as my
own hand falls, was spectacular. When the pitiful resistance came
bravely with their small firearms and we destroyed them and a good
chunk of the city with the 4.8 ton bomb, I was at my height.
I like it when we are destroyed with the morning dew. It is a sad
thing when the town one is supposed to protect is trampled, and the
women and children violated and killed. Ilike being squashed and
destroyed by England and America's amount of material resources. Being
followed by English and American forces and having to crawl around on
the ground like a pesky insect is the ultimate disgrace.
Gentlemen, I desire a war that is like hell.
Gentlemen, my companions in the battalion, who follow me; gentlemen,
what do you desire? Do you desire war as well? Do you desire a war of
no mercy? Do you desire a conflict that stretches the limits of iron,
wind, lightning, and fire to the limit, one that will kill all the
crows on this planet?"

"War! War! War!"

"Very well then we shall have war! We used all the strength in our
bodies to clench our fists, but for us, who have waited and waited in
the depths of this darkness for half a century, A MERE WAR IS NOT
ENOUGH!! It must be a great war!! A whole-hearted great war!! We are
nothing more than a thousand remaining soldiers of a battalion, but I
believe you are all veterans, each worth a thousand men. In that case,
including me, we are a million and one strong!
Let us drive away those that have forgotten us, let us pull awake
those who have fallen in their sleep. Let us pull them up by their
hair and pry their eyes open and make them remember! Let us remind
them of the taste of fear! Let us remind them of the sound of our
jackboots pounding! Let us remind them that there are things between
the earth and sky which they would not even dream to be possible!
With a kampf gruppe of vampires 1000 strong, we will burn the world down."

Watch Trigun all the way through, then try to say that again.
Could/would a kid enjoy Trigun?  Sure.
Would the kid catch most of it?  I doubt it.

Here is a list containing some fairly decent shows, or if not really great then at least artistically influential, in the opinions of the people who write the articles, much of it with reviews and analysis.

Japanese animation is like any other mass-produced mass entertainment.  Most of it is crude, lowbrow, lowest-common-denominator crap.  But some of it is very good.
