Amazing that some can't see that.

He is not a "laborer" wanting the government to dictate to his employer how much his time should be worth.  Every dime he made people freely give him at a rate they freely choose to pay for goods.

How ANYONE can compare this issue to the minimum wage discussions shows just how clueless some are about the issue at hand.

FWIW, anyone of those laborers who feel they aren't getting paid enough are free to move to NYC and buy a hot dog stand - or start their own business anywhwere, for that matter.

Not really the best person to start trying to justify the difference as he FREELY entered into a contract with the city [even tho it was crappy] for the rights to the location and then reniged on his payments after enjoying the exclusive rights to the location.

I'm of the opinion he never intended to pay rent in the first place.  He just wanted to make as much money as he could in the time it took for them to realize they weren't getting paid.  They found out and gave him the boot, but no matter, he's long gone with a shit load of cash and NYC is trying to get $300K from a ghost.

Wow $54,000 / month  divided by 30 days = $1800 / day rent.

Whats a plain hotdog cost in NY ~ $6 maybe. You New Yorkers verify this.

$1800 divided by 6 = 300 hotdogs a day ...every day....just to cover the rent.

ETA: And he's gotta sell even more than that to cover his overhead of buying the propane, hotdogs , buns , condiments, AND pay NYC taxes to boot.

So he's probably having to sell TWICE as much or sell'em at $15-20 dollars a pop just to break even.

I have started several businesses here, in the last 30+ years.

I keep looking for these 'tax breaks', have not yet found

anything 'special' for foreigners.

'Minority Owned' will not apply to me before 2038 -

that is the predicted date when "Caucasian = minority"

and at the rate we are going downhill, teh "end-of-life councilling"

will have solved all my problems before then.

Thanks for the welcome, though.

Last time I was there a hot dog was something like 3.00, maybe 3.50. It's been about 2 years.

I also recall he had a line when I went in, and 3 hours later when I left. I have no doubt in my mind he could sell plenty of hot dogs to make rent. And of course he isn't limited to hotdogs- drinks and pretzels are pretty typical at a hotdog stand. The guy was taking debit cards.

New York city isn't stupid. The powers that be know exactly what a vendor can expect to make for a given location. The Met. is a tourist destination, and so are NYC hot dog stands. A lot of tourists kill two birds with one stone when they visit. If this guy couldn't make his rent then it was either intentional or just a shitty result of decreased tourism to the city. Either way he chose to pay for that spot, so I don't really see the problem. If he didn't, someone else would have been happy to.

Guess how much a NYC taxi badge goes for at the auctions.

The only street food I've had in Manhattan was a Polish sausage outside the Met, so I think I've seen this guy.

IIRC, he operates a typical hot dog kart operated by 1-3 people.   50k/month in rent for kart space doesn't seem sustainable, even there.

Here is the key missing part to this story:

Sherpa agreed late last year to pay almost $643,000 annually for the right to sell food and drinks from carts on either side of the Met's entrance. He fell $310,000 behind on rent and the city has seized $170,000 in Sherpa's assets.

If the rent was so outrageous, why did he agree to pay it?  He took a business risk and lost.

While that rent number seems a little outrageous, if this spot is as well traveled as some here suggest you could still make big money after all the rent bullshit. If this hotdog stand is usually holding a line, the question then becomes how fast the hotdog can be served. Even with just 2 employees im sure you could average 2 a minute during a rush. Granted i know nothing of this particular operation, but food cost on a hotdog can be absurdly low depending on quality, maybe south of 10 percent (assuming the going rate is 3.50).  Even if they only sold 600 dogs a day (which i think is not all that high) the extras would add up to a decent profit.

I think we have a couple members here who have hot dog stands, or have had them.
Last spring somebody was asking for advice on pricing his hot dogs, I think specifically
combo meals and costs associated with condiments,  and,  a member or two started doing
hot dog math, and it was pretty interesting looking at their costs, and other issues.
It was a pretty cool discussion.
