Classified DD-214s (Page 2 of 3)

A few years ago I requested a copy of my DD214 from the VA.   What I got LOOKS redacted.   But it is really one of the worst quality photo copies that you have ever seen.   You really have to struggle to make out that it was an honorable discharge.

They are completely full of shit.
214s are not perfect.

There will be errors on 214s.
Looking closer at mine, it lists my OAC, but not OBC or CGSC.
It’s also lists a 52 week time for a school instead of 10 weeks.
I should have caught it, but transitioning to a retirement ceremony, still working, getting new employment lined up, terminal leave, out processing, etc. you might not catch everything.

People will also have things that changed after they got it.
Like some got stuff that did not used to exist- and could apply for corrections, like SF Tab, HALO wings, etc.
Without errors, though,  every tab, badge, Ribbon, medal, etc. gets On there.

There will be some stuff that ends up “transparent.”

Like, if it lists SERE (HIGH RISK) you know they did a level C course, but you don’t know if it was in Maine, CA, NC, Washington, etc., which service conducted it, if was peacetime vs wartime confinement model, etc.)

And,

Like, say someone gets on a plane,
flies to  Kenya,
gets on a ship,
Go underway,
Watches Navy people do weird ass homoerotic shellback shit,
Then gets on a helicopter,
Goes to Somalia, kills some savages,
Gets back on the ship,
Goes to Djibouti,
Gets on a plane, and is back home three weeks later.

It’s possible their 214 will reflect all three, or possibly only two, or only one.
And the guy could say - he went to all three but not prove because it says “Djibouti 20090831 - 20090920”.
But there will be enough other stuff on their 214, ERB, or ORB to hint at their validity.

Very much like a resume that cannot specifically say things but have a very specific hole that people in the know can fill in and draw their own conclusions about.

I was getting at more like nonspecific or transparent.

Let’s take something major everyone knows about.
But was very hush hush intitially.

If an asset that was already in Afghanistan launched on something like, say Neptune Spear,
And they got a BSM V, and JMUA or PUC, those will show up.
But it may only show Afghanistan and not Pakistan.
Their classified OER will still only be at secret level and not specifically mention key aspects.
Their exact roll will be deep in a TS/SCI Award citation.

So- 99.87% of those claims about too secret for their records you hear are going to be totally bullshit.
With the remainder walking around that did shit without open official, specific proof.

When I have submitted some of my DD214s ( I have 3 ) I have blacked stuff out like security clearance and some other stuff because it was none of their business and had no bearing proving I am a vet.

but it isnt classified its just info I didnt want people to have

Terribly fitting you chose that example. I have that very problem, just on the civilian side from that very event.

What it boils down to is the obese 27 year old grabbing a smoke outside the unaffiliated brake job / oil change shop with a beer belly working for cash under the table while collecting 100% VA PTSD disability and SSDI with an 80K truck regaling you with stories of his time as a CAG operator that went in with SEAL Team 6 to kill Bin Laden and was honor grad from his USMC Scout Sniper Course and SOTIC while he was an “18B” Team Sergeant but it was all classified from his DD214 was far more likely an E4 in the 82nd mechanic that finished a little over three of his four year enlistment before getting chaptered out.

Hi there. I am a boring 25U/35B.

I was just a glorified grunt with a shovel that purposely went out to look for land mines AKA combat engineer. I then got smart and reclassed to 44E Machinist when I was offered the chance right after Desert Storm. I definitely wasn't any type of super secret squirrel ninja warrior. But as a machinist, I was assigned, attached, or worked with some very interesting units. I worked with foreign material intelligence units making/repairing stuff for them.

The first unit I was assigned to was actually the US Military's only operating rail road unit. I was assigned to the Maintenance Of Way company. We took care of all rail road tracks owned/operated by DOD. That unit had a few combat engineers assigned to it incase we ever had to destroy rail lines and rail bridges. I also spent plenty of time in that unit pounding spikes too.

I made my own redacted 214 by blacking out all the consonants and numbers.

If they can’t figure it out with vowels, they don’t need to know.

When I was getting medically retired at Fort Carson in 2010, I was meeting with the DD-214 person. She told me that she had an issue with the fact that my DD-214 was more than one page and that she could not understand some of the RVN awards listed on previous DD-214's.  I served from 1970 to 2010, and had been in RVN as well as Operation Just Cause; Gulf One; and then Iraq. Of my 40 years in the military I had been in SF for about 36 years of it. So I did have some different awards as well as some UTARNG awards and Army Reserve awards.

She told me her goal was to reduce each soldiers DD-214 so a single page. She was upset with me and wanted to remove some of my RVN awards because she couldn't find them in the current regs. I told her that I got those before she was ever born and to leave them in.  I can state that there are classified awards, but there aren't any classified DD-214's.

After I retired I went to the Army Board for Correction of Military Records and ended up with a 4 page DD-214.  Not for awards, but due to a promotion from E-8 to E-9 and and the awarding of a campaign medal.  Each change required a separate page of it's own called a DD-215.  There is nothing special in my DD-214, and I have met people who claim to have a "classified DD-214" and I can assure you they are full of shit.  It's just a listing of awards and doesn't give any reason or rationale why they were awarded.

if i encounter one i want to ask them "they actually put classified info on there then blacked it out?  makes no sense why wouldn't they just not put it on there in the first place. "

The Army Overseas Service Ribbon isn’t the same award as the N/MC version. I’d research your regulation and confirm you can’t wear it.  I’ve seen a shitload of people in the Army Guard wearing Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, the Army Overseas Service Ribbon and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon all on the same row of ribbons for different periods that they were overseas.

If it's blacked out on their 214, and no one knows what they are supposed to have done, then why don't they shut their yap about it, before someone else shuts it for them?

We have a local kid who was in the Reserves, and did get sent to Iraq. He drove a truck, which I am certain was a scary job due to IED's. Credit where credit is due.

That said, he CONSTANTLY talks about how Delta was trying to recruit him. A fat little E3 truck driver. When he comes into the barber shop there is a lot of eye rolling.....

Tell me more about the cash under the table,
As a divorced dad with one kid full time, a house payment, and adult responsibilities that 100p&t means I'm fucking broke on the 11th and rolling change/returning bottles for the rest of the month

Eta,
Mines all physical injuries though, no ptsd or sleep apnea

Love the 30th RS patch. About the coolest patch I have is the 5th BW. I swear the rest of my unit logos were competitions to see how lame of a patch they could design.

Wish I had a patch from here. Don't think they had any at the time, ended up with a coin (and a pic of Harrell "tacking" on my stripes).

I was assigned to a joint unit (JCSE) at MacDill AFB. We went all over the world on missions, both  classified and unclassified.  On classified missions, our orders said "SECRET" in the "To" section.  You know what my DD-214 says?  Assigned JCSE, MacDill AFB 1982-1986.  There is no mention of any TDY missions on my DD-214.

Former commander of a VFW post in New Jersey played the "Former SEAL in Vietnam" and my records are classified" bullshit for years. In fact, it's what got him elected commander.

Turns out he was a refrigeration specialist on a ship and never set foot in Vietnam.

I also have a document with everyone's full name and SSN from our deployment orders to Northern Iraq in 1991. I had destroyed my copy, but thankfully a buddy kept his and shared it with me. Everyone who deployed got a copy. I'm pretty sure that isn't a thing these days.

OTOH, my 214 was FUBAR for 20 years. I was missing 3 awards, and thanks to that copy my friend shared with me, I was able to submit a request to the Army Review board to get my medals list corrected. They didn't actually send me a corrected copy of my 214, but rather a supplemental sheet with list of the corrections they authorized Pretty lazy, Army.

The only thing that is officially redacted on my 214 is my separation SPN code. Another underhanded DoD tactic....why was I surprised to learn of this? I'd LOVE to see what was there before they blacked it out. I have an honorable DC after multiple reenlistments, so what could be there is an unsolved mystery

A lot of awards (for qualification badges and such) along with deployment or school orders were like that when I was in. The unit would just cut one set with everyone's name and info on it and them hand out copies.

And talking about mistakes or missing info on a DD214, mine is a mess. I initially enlisted in the Army Reserves and was AGR (active duty reservist). And when I switched to Regular Army, it threw everyone for a loop. It also didn't help that I got a letter from the USAR CG stating that no DD214 would be issued since I switched components. To make matters worse it took over two years for my original 201 File to catch up to me.

Ft Irwin had to redo my DD214 several times in order to get my Basic Active Service Date and Basic Entry Pay Date correct. And good thing I kept copies of any awards I received while assigned to that first Reserve unit. None are on any DD214 since the USAR did not issue a final DD214 when I switched components.

While things are missing from my final DD214 when I got out, nothing was redacted.

I totally lost my original (I know not smart). I requested a copy several times and all they would send was a letter/form (says NA FORM 13038) which stated my enlistment/separation dates and that was basically it. Finally I sent an email requesting a copy of the original and they sent the same letter and a DD214 with a bunch of stuff redacted that looks like dates. I was USAF Telecom no top secret, and no super special assignments so I have no idea why it would be like. Wish I could remember what the original looked like but pretty sure it had all the dates on it.

ETA Not taking up for the posers that say they were so deep in the stuff they cant talk about it, just saying i don't know why mine is like that. Most special thing I worked on was the comm circuits for Looking Glass and the phones in SAC command at Kadena.

Your welcome. You can use either the electronic request there or as listed lower on that page, you can submit the linked SF-180 form and mail it directly to the NPRC. The NPRC file I received had med records for me all the way back to 1985, including some events the VA denied ever occurred when I initially submitted my disability request in 2012. Better believe I made copies and put that into my follow on packet to them. Good luck!

Lol, I've heard that from posers as well ... there's usually an easy way to expose them. Ask them some other technical questions, duty stations, where they went to attend specific schools, etc.  They'll out themselves with bullshit answers.

Yeah, it’s bullshit.   DD214s are by nature not classified.   If there was something that should be recorded on the document that is classified it will be listed as the closest non-classified action.

On the one hand, that's the most SECRET thing they know; on the other hand, if they said ASA "Radio Research" Vietnam, no one they were trying to impress would understand it either!

WTF?

There is no way a person over 20 with even the hint of a deployment can fit a single page.

I worked at LANL for 6 years and the challenge coins I saw were usually part of a SAP.  The .mil dudes love coins and handing them out.

The correction should be on a 215.

If it’s not RE-1A, it means you suck and should feel bad.

Or alternately, based on your “twenty years” comment, I assume you aren’t reenlisting, so who gives a fuck?

Kind of like the medals and the 214, who cares, as long as you know they’re legit.

214 is pretty meaningless anyway. I’ve been handed a blank “214 worksheet” and asked to enter anything I wanted on the 214. No verification required.

I have literally viewed 10 of thousands of DD214's from all eras.

I have never seen one that was redacted.

Total BS

When I was getting out, they gave me a draft of my DD214 to proof read and let them know if anything was wrong ahead of time. All was good. The day I'm getting out I go to pick up the real copy, a bunch of shit is changed or deleted. Mundane awards and details, not secret squirrel stuff. I asked them what happened and the lady did the IDK shrug and had no idea how long it would take to correct to what was on the draft I had in hand. Possibly not same day. "Ok, this fucked up version is fine, bye."

Hi, I was a 29E20/35E20 Radio repairer in the VTANG. Before that I was an active duty 11B20 (who may have done some not so boring shit). I could regale you on numerous Quasi secret operational shit, but you'll never hear me utter the words "So one time I asked a LtCol if he wanted me to fix the squelching issue on his RT-524 in his HMMWV" while at a tank live fire range...

Just busting your chops. I loved being a grunt but that crap was/is for the young kids.

"What did you do during your time in the service?"

Me? As little as possible. In the field we busted our asses to get our gear setup, but then spent our shifts sleeping in the floor of our tropo shelter with the orderwire headset on because it was dark and air-conditioned if not a bit cramped.

I redact mine to cover the SSN and some other PII pieces of info - but it didn't come that way.

Bingo, you can't put secret info (and above) in an document that is overall unclassified, "classified" also isn't a classification. It is either classified: Secret, Top Secret or TS-SCI...ect  The blackout portions have to with PII, the DoD is hot on PII being handled properly (CUI). If anyone ever told me their DD214 is classified I'd ask: "what is the classification? are storing it in a SCIF? How are meeting the requirements for the storage and handling of classified secret documents?"

Never had anyone try the classified routine on me,  Though I have come across faked ones in LE application packages.

I was really impressed by the guy that spent three years in the Arkansas National Guard who managed to attend the entire 18 series MOS course catalog AND deploy to Iraq three times all the while being promoted to E7 without somehow, going thru a single leadership school. (He was 26 years old)

Did you know there are Special Forces Artillery Battalions in the Arkansas National Guard?
