2. TikTok must cut ties with its Chinese owner or face a US ban
On Wednesday, US President Biden signed a $95B national-security package passed by Congress that provides military aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Part of the package signed into law was a bill that will ban TikTok in the US if its Chinese parent company ByteDance does not sell the app within 270 days (9 months). Biden can extend this by 90 days if there is progress towards a sale, for a maximum timeline of one year – which means, in any scenario, there would be no impact before this year’s November election. Any new owner of TikTok must not be “controlled by a foreign adversary” – i.e. entities from China, Russia, North Korea, or Iran may not collectively hold a 20% or larger stake. |
