I'm looking for a new basic upper (A2/A3 carry handle, 16" bbl, chrome lined).  I'm putting together a basic gun and would like to know what the consensus is among these manufacturers.  Ignore my username, its only b/c I have an LAR-8.  Just compare these to each other and let me know who is better.  If you wouldn't mind, try to list in order of best to worst.  Thanks.

Spikes
Stag
Armalite
RRA
CMMG
Bush
(without thinking too much about it)

That said if you are looking for an upper I would go with BCM. Good price for what you are getting

In all honesty all those are good uppers.  I would choose the one with the options you like the most.  Spikes makes one hell of an upper but I also own RRA stuff and theirs are good to go also.

I am not going to knock any of those brands but if I had to make a choice right now Spikes would be first then RRA/Stag close second.

I prefer Armalite because they have always worked for me.  I have 4 colts and 2 Armalites. The Armalites I have seen, used and owned have always functioned reliably. I have never expirienced any malfuntcions or parts breakage in 3 I have owned and over 7000 rounds.

Any you listed are GTG. Pick one you can get the best deal on.

Spikes followed by Stag from that list.

Specifically this one

Of those, I would go with either the stag or armalite.

I thought CMT/Stag made the majority of AR parts for the most manufacturers.  Does anyone know what brands CMT makes?

Bushmaster and Armalite rifles for me.....but I don't dislike the others either.  I love the Bushmaster barrels.

I know that, I ment that I thought CMT made uppers and lowers with roll marks for other manufacturers.  Like Rock River is actually made by CMT.  Is this true?

I don't have anything bad to say about the others, but Spikes gets my business.  The # of times they have gone out of their way for customers and me personally has guaranteed I will buy from them as long as they are selling.

Hell, their actions have made my wife fall in love with them, and that is half the battle.

Lotta nut riders around here... Stag, Armalite and RRA would be what i'd look at first from that list.

Others you should consider: Colt, LMT & BCM.

Spike's
<snip>
RRA
Bushmaster
Stag
CMMG

Not an armalite fan.

There's a big quality gap in your selections so the choice is easy, Spike's!

If by nut riders you mean people that can read and understand basic facts about the specifications of different rifles, then yea there are a shit ton of nut riders here.

Out of those choices RRA, Armalite,Bushmaster, Stag, and then cmmg, and if you wanted the best service rifle or AR-15 I would get a Colt.

The bottom line is this....if you are interested in what the Chart says, and quality....Spikes is the only one out of the group that can hold a candle to what most AR afficionados consider the tier 1 guns out there. I'm not sure what a nutrider is...unless its a drunk girl on prom night but I own or have owned several of those brands...CMMG, Bushmaster and currently 4 Spikes.......theres a reason for that. Now that i know a bit more about AR's than when I first started, I look for quality over price. I won't say the Bushmaster and CMMG were bad at all, I will say that my Spikes have higher quality and mil spec components than the others out of the box and for a bit less in price.

I'd rather stick with manufacturers that have been around for a while and have a proven record for using quality parts and have a set standard. Colt, LMT, BCM.
From your list, I've had best results from Rock River. I do have a Bushmaster I bought in 1999 thats still running just fine.Spikes specs look good but since I don't have one I really don't know.

All mentioned are good with a quality BCG.

That said my choice would be BCM w/BCM BCG.

Out of the ones you mentioned Spikes , CMMG, and Stag are the top for better QC in their parts.  The rest are kind of bunched together in a lower group.

you can get a full colt a2 upper or piece one together that is pretty dang nice. Or have bcm parts mounted on a quality a2 upper receiver.  If you don't want to do that, just get spikes and quit worrying. The parts you need to pay attention to are the bcg and barrel.

I'm a RRA guy myself but,  just about all the companies listed are equal.  Each company makes its name by a few outstanding parts.  thats whats nice about building your own!  You can choose what parts/where.any way that's my two cents, and my first post

I fall in this camp as well.  I recall all the days when CMMG was first out and everyone told everyone else to get one.  Now after hearing what bigbore has to say about them glad I held back.

If Spike's plays out with the awesomeness I expect it to over the next few years I'll get one myself.

Until then - BCM, Colt, Noveske and Bushmaster (who some would say is not in the same league, but hard to deny they make a great barrel).
