I've had the Centurion 10'' and 12''.  They are phenomenal rails - they give you quad and leave you with something a bit lighter than RIS 2.  Do not hesitate to go Centurion.  Their lock up I would argue is a slightly better design than the RIS 2 because it's not as exposed and for sure is rockkkkk solid.

I understand, I miss my Block 2 14.5'' upper as well.

It's probably the only upper that I actually miss.  Strange because when I had it I just thought it was a heavy piece o' crap.

I've been through five M4A1 Block II uppers now.

It's been a long, ongoing cycle of getting one, similarly thinking it's a crazy heavy upper that does no more than any other 14.5", selling it, and then a few months later, picking up yet another.

I always toy around with the idea of selling my Block II upper for an SR15 upper, but I can't bring myself to do it.

I had someone offer me a complete M4-A1 COLT upper with the RIS II, 14.5 pinned and welded last week for $700.00, I should have said yes because I've had a couple of offers from people wanting $500~600 for JUST the rails.
I was really hoping to build another BLOCK II but those SMR MK4's and NSR's are looking way more tempting now. About as bad as that guy who wanted $350.00 dollars for the 4-prong Surefire! Sigh...

LOL really? Ouch!

So yeah LUCKY F'ING DAY for me! Yesterday anyway!

My wife was out of town yesterday so I drove an hour to my hometown to visit a friend I have not seen in about 4 years. While I was there I stopped in the LGS that I had also not been in for probably 4 years either. It's one of the biggest gun shops in Michigan.

So I'm browsing around in the AR section and I see two DD boxes sitting in a glass cabinet but I can't see WHAT rails they are because they are backwards. So I ask and the guy tells me the boxes say M4-A1 RIS II. My heart skips a beat... I had him pull one out but it was the black rail. He pulls the second one out and SCORE! It's the FDE rail. Then he proceeds to tell me that he thinks they have a few more in the back, they just don't seem to sell.

The price? Box was marked $399.99 MARKED DOWN TO $330.00! Guy says do you have cash? If you pay cash, I'll do $300.00 out the door today only. I just so happened to have the cash on me. I had just sold something that day and I had the cash I was going to use to buy a COLT SOCOM barrel but I can get those anytime so I got the M4-A1 RIS II FDE while I could because I know I'm not getting one off the Classified here for $300.00 new in the box! :)

SCORE! Seriously! Obviously he has no idea what they had.

Story does get a little better though. I got home and pulled everything out of the box and there was something else under the parts baggy... A brand new in the bag Spikes Tactical ST-02 Tungsten Heavy Buffer. No idea why it was in there but double score I guess? Shops an hour away and this was the first time I've been there in 4~5 years so I'm not running back to give it to them LOL! :)

Well actually, I bought 5, 4 Terabyte Western Digital hard drives because I was going to upgrade my 4 Terebyte Plex Media Server to a 16 Terebyte (Raid 5 4+1 drive setup) so that I could rip all of my Blu-Ray dicks to .mkv files and access them on any of the TV's in the house.

However I got lazy and never used the drives so I had put them on for "trade" here actually, trying to score build parts for my second BLOCK II rifle. Someone offered me a complete upper for all 5 but it was a Bushmaster 11.5 inch so that really doesn't fit the BLOCK II mold if you will! =)

I had them out so I could take pictures, I think I'm just going to eBay them. I should be able to get $500 bucks out of them. I obviously need another BLOCK II rifle MORE than a bigger Plex Server for um, reasons......... :)

And by Blu-Ray dicks, I'm obviously talking about my gay porn here............

BLU-RAY DISCS! Typo... Cough cough...

Good score there.  I would've had him pull the rest in the back and bought up the remaining FDE RIS II rails, bank.

Funny you mention that. When I get paid this next week I'm going to go back and get a couple more of them and toss them on eBay and see what happens.

I need a SOCOM barrel, a COLT BCG, COLT stripped complete upper if anyone might wanna work some trades! LOL! :D

Thanks for the N1 stock person who just sold me one for $35.00 shipped that doesn't look like it was blown up or run over by a truck!

The thing that makes me SICK...

A few years ago I had several MK18 RIS II FSP rails.  Brand new in the white cardboard box, sealed in the foil packs.  Straight US gov stuff.

Couldn't move 'em on the EE.  Think I unloaded 'em for like $200 each.

Yep that is how it goes man! Kinda reminds me of those Surefire 4-prong flash hiders that were never sold to the public. When those Industry Partners got there hands on them and leaked them out, they barely moved for $85.00 dollars a pop. I remember one of the guys telling me that he had a bunch of them and could hardly sell them. Now people want like $200~300.00 for them and they seem to sell at those prices.

QUESTION!

So I'm building my second BLOCK II rifle. Sorry I ever sold my first. Trying to decide is um I want to do another upper using full DD parts again OR go for the true COLT upper. I'm almost thinking the COLT build might be cheaper.

A SOCOM barrel seems to cost the same as a DD 14.5 or 16 inch M4 profile. The COLT and DD BCG's seem to roughly both be around $200 bucks.

Now for a stripped upper, for those of you who are trying to do true COLT style upper builds, are you tracking down actual COLT stripped uppers or use using whatever?

Last I saw there was an FNMI M4 upper on the EE for $70 or something like that.

Beyond that, if you're wanting to do an "all correct" clone, then yes, a Colt, or possibly FNMI upper would be the most "correct."  There seem to be a lot of fairly affordable Colt take-offs available at any given time in the EE.

Traded four GI mags for an N1 not too long ago.
I keep meaning to pick up one of the repros, or one of the banged up originals so I won't feel so bad about painting it.

We have seen a few instances of FH556-RCs on PRs before:

I also need to save for graduate school.

That would be a good start as the taupe sight can be hard to find at times.

You could also do a FSP build, eliminating the need for a KAC front BUIS all together.

Beyond that, if you're wanting to do an "all correct" clone, then yes, a Colt, or possibly FNMI upper would be the most "correct."  There seem to be a lot of fairly affordable Colt take-offs available at any given time in the EE.

SPEAKING OF FNMI.... So um FNMI parts would now be clone kosher from what I'm understanding due to the contract.

SO... I've seen these FNMI 1/7 FN roll marked barrels for like $160.00 dollars. Why? Why are they so cheap if they are made by FN? The price point is almost scaring me away. I was going to get a SOCOM barrel but $160.00 is hard to beat if it's a true FN barrel. Am I misunderstanding something here?

Because if I can get an FN barrel for $160, maybe score a used FNMI (F Keyhole marked) upper for $70.00 or so, hell this this will be one of the cheapest builds I've ever done. The only thing I would be missing would be the gas block and BCG. Would love to score a matching FNMI BCG if they are to be had.

PSA and they are 16"

However I have a friend who owns a machine shop and is really into AR's, he does all his own AR barrel chops and I swear they look better than factory sometimes. He would cut it to 14.5 and pin/weld it for beer.

I think I figured it out. They are not CHF. But for $159.00 dollars, up until my last DD build I'd never owned a CHF barrel and all my AR's have always been fine for what I do so I think I'm going to try one out.

I see several people here in this thread have tried them and posted in another thread about the CHF and non-CHF versions and commented that they both work fine.

Love this thread and build discussion.  I have been reading from page one, and gained a lot of information.  Couple questions as I start to piece parts together for my second build.  Is using the black RIS 2 instead of FDE GTG, and what about the Tango down vertgrip with the QD or the Daniel Defense ConVert Foregrip?  My plan is using BCM lower, BCM SOCOM upper with pinned Mod 1, and EOTech 553.  Sorry for my ignorance, as I'm still researching the best I can.

Well if you want to be anal about it, it would be made from COLT or FN parts and you would use the FDE rail.

That said, I've always based my BLOCK II stuff on Noveske and Daniel Defense. Also they make this stuff called spray paint. If you paint your rifle, who's to tell the difference but technically no, black is not GTG. Given how hard it is to find FDE rails at a good price though, spray paint for the win.

I don't suppose anyone has any COLT M4, COLT SOCOM or Daniel Defense barrels laying around they want to sell do they? Looking for a barrel for my new BLOCK II upper.

I'd consider 14.5 or 16"

OR if anyones looking to part out a BLOCK II upper, I might consider an already pinned and welded barrel and I could send you my brand new barrel nut so you have one to sell with your rail.

I never have any luck with this stuff in the EE so don't yell at me! I post in the EE, I get nothing. I post here and someone hooks me up in like one day.

You could also Cerakote the rail. Pretty sure there are a couple colors that are damn near close to DD's FDE color. Not to mention my RISII is boarder line brown not FDE so you'll have a little leeway in the color department.

Could you buy the black RIS II, then send it to U.S. Anodizing? They do have the DD FDE as an option...

I just asked this very question last week. Lucky for me, I ended up scoring a new in the box RIS II in FDE for $300.00 dollars out the door at an LGS! :)

Hi Roadblock (name edited!),

Not sure if it would be cost effective to re-anodize black rail in FDE.   We will have to run that dye just for your rail, also the shade may not be a perfect match to the Daniel Defense shade.  Something close can be done, I just do not have any sample of that shade to go by.

The 553 is the most rugged EOTech made to date. It can dive to 66 ft for 2 hours, EXPS is 33 ft for 2 hrs. The 553 had to undergo more torture/ drop testing etc that the EXPS didn't, things of that nature. The EXPS is a tough sight too though.

Interesting, because the black RIS is described as part of SOPMOD 2 program for SOCOM.  I guess piss canning or cerakote is an option as well.  I guess the VG's are GTG, either Tango or DD.

Just because it says that on BCM's site doesn't mean it's right. They are referring to the rail itself. Not the color. The FDE is the only color provided to SOCOM units as part of the block II program.
