Has anyone put wood furniture on a national match floating tube? Just wondering how to attach on the front end of the floating tube.

Suggestions appreciated

The national match floating tubes accept standard 2 piece handguards, correct? Then wood 2 piece handguard replacements should fit as well.

I don't see why it wouldn't work, but they are expensive enough I don't blame you for trying to find out first.

There have been some threads here in the past with some wood furniture pics. If you google "AR15.com wood furniture" you might find one.

Those are kind of ugly and clunky looking If you check out the wood AR stocks by Ironwod Designs they are really the only nice looking wooden AR stocks and are the only ones worth spending any money on. Check out www.ironwooddesigns.com you should be able to see some examples. Also a quick call to them should answer your questions. Someone here had a beautiful set of nice dark figured walnut Ironwood Designs AR stocks on his rifle and they were really great looking. Perhaps he will see this thread and repost the pictures of his rifle....<><....:)

This poster says he is going to do it. But mentioned having to mill the handguards.

Yep, that's me.  Here's why they won't just drop right onto a NM float tube, too - first look closely at a NM float tube, and a NM gas tube that'll clear that float tube.  Once you're familiar with the diameters you'll need to clear, it's easy to see why the rifle length wood handguards aren't going right on there.  Here's the clearances inside those handguards:

The internal machining of the handguards already closely follows the diameter of a heavy barrel, and the standard gas tube.  There's a significant amount of material that need to come out of those handguards in order to clear the float tube and it's specific gas tube.

I'm using a Compass Lake float tube, and a RRA NM gas tube.

http://www.compasslake.com/float_tube.htm

There aren't any wood furniture manufacturers out there right now that are making handguards that will clear a float tube, so this is something you'll have to do yourself.

Not entirely true.  When I was searching all over for a decent stock set, the Ironwoods were not even appealing - nor was the price.  I finally found exactly what I was looking for from a company called Precision Firearms.

http://www.precisionfirearms.com/

Talked to the owner for quite awhile before ordering, and I'm completely happy with my set.  The bonus was that they were completely finished already, coated with stockmaker's clearcoat, and WAY cheaper than anything else out there.

The Ironwood Designs HG's should interface with a NM tube just fine so long as it has a triangular HG cap.  I believe that the internal machining of the wood can accommodate the tube OK.

Here's what the inside of the Ironwood handguards look like.

Wow, that's really nice looking...I do a little woodworking (solid-body electric guitars), and I've had the notion for a while that I'd like to make some interesting furniture for my AR and my Sig556...the Ironwood picture has got me thinkin' a bit more.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm having difficulty uploading pics, so I'll just have to explain.

My upper is a RRA standard 20" rifle length, with standard 2 piece foregrip. With the foregrip removed, and comparing to the RRA national match tube, the standard front foregrip
triangle mount has considerably more room than does the national match tube. It appears that there isn't enough room to get the two foregrip halves inserted.

I will continue to try to get the photos up, suggestions appreciated.

An option that I've considered, as far as that "look" while keeping a wider furniture selection:
Most of the water transfer outfits have wood grain patterns.

That's exactly why you'll have to mill a set of wood handguards.  Most people don't realize what you're working with on the free float tube.  Even the plastic handguards need some work (unless they're already made as handguards for a NM float tube).  Compass lake will mill your plastics ones for you.  They won't touch wood ones, which I inderstand.

@ 98z5v... So you installed the Compass Lake tube and milled your hand guards to fit? It does look like there is more room on the compass Lake tube.
And will the gas tube clear or will I need to mill some for clearance?

My furniture is made by Lucid (I think same as yours) and will be here this week. My RRA tube has to go back.

I got the AAA Walnut, but I also like your laminate version very much.

That is a really huge diameter tube.  You are going to have a difficult time getting even plastic HG's to fit that setup.  The gap between the tube and HG cap is really small.

Haven't milled the handguards yet.  They won't fit the CLE tube, as they are, and they'll need some work.  With the CLE tube, you have to use a NM gas tube, with a different bend to it - it bends up almost right out of the gas block.  The way my handguards are now, they're made as thick as they can be, all the way back to a standard rifle-length gas tube bend.  That will need milled on my handguards.  I'll try to get a pic up comparing the two gas tubes.

It'd be cool if this thread stayed on topic, without all the other bullshit getting tossed in here.
