Got to shoot 1/4sticknick's Larue SSSSSSSSSSSSS  and it was amazing.  I'm not an accurate shooter, but I can say that I've never shot a tighter group that I know of.

Good job, Mark.  Maybe one day......

What's the weight of one of those standard 16" uppers? Is it pretty heavy in the front?

Yep, its a bit front heavy with the center of balance being right at the barrel nut. Then again I am using a CTR which I'll change to a UBR to try and balance the gun a bit more.

The instructor at my recent SPR/DM school used a LaRue upper and it was one of the best I have ever seen.  It shot well with every type of ammo that we tried and it ran like a top.

If I were buying a factory built SPR/Recon upper, I would get a LaRue.

I'm getting 7/8"  5 shot groups at 100 yards with this thing using PP 75gr match ammo. Is is capable of better or do I just suck at grouping? Also what kind of 10 shots groups are you guys getting?

how does the barrel of the larue compare in weight to a hbar stainless barrel?  Also how well do all of the flip up sights work?  Do they work as well as the standard front sight and rear sight built into the handle?

Why is it that I keep tagging LaRue threads, though they are so far out of this MPs price range that it isn't even funny. Im looking a precision AR build. I want to buy once, and cry once...but damn!

The cry once is only applicable when you hit the buy button. Once you get it in your hands you'll think, "Damn, this was worth every penny."

Its seems the Quad-S likes high quality 55gr ammo better than the 75gr and 77gr stuff.

I just got my upper receiver just recently. I even got the Black Ion bond with no additional charge. So far I've only put about 110 rounds through it just to check the receiver. But come monday morning it will be put through a 5 day M4 course. I have the 16inch barrel with the 13.2 Larue rail. I'll post a picture later of it but first I have to put it through the course and see how it performs. The ammo were using is 69grain Winchester hollow point.

Get back to us on how it performs. I trust that my quad-s is reliable since I put about 1500 rounds through it without a single problem. I'd like to see how it performs under hard use.

You can thank that awesome gun builder program you have. I was home sick the other day and had nothing to do but build different configs. I had just got the EoTech 557ar223 for this build but after putting an acog on there it just fit better! This is my 1st Acog so im anxious to play with it.

Thanks Larue

I didn't dig through pages 3 or 4 of this thread to see if this review was linked to.

www.defensereview.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1086

"All in all, if you’re looking for a tactical-config tack driver to strap on top of your existing lower, this will easily fit the bill. The Special Purpose Rifle (SPR)/Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) is the newest addition to many infantry squads, and has proven extremely effective in the hands of trained rifleman in both Iraq and Afghanistan. This is nothing less then what I call an SPR/K, or SPR “Short”. It will perform like its 18” or 20” brothers, but cuts length and weight from front end. You lose a little velocity, but gain in portability, with no discernable accuracy loss at SPR distances (0-500m)."

This past Saturday morning, I hit the local range with a friend.  I took my recent LaRue Stealth build to get a feel for it.

It was late morning, kinda breezy, and hot enough (90 - 95 deg) to provide some heat mirage.  With those conditions, shooting off a bipod, and not being a benchrest shooter, I wasn't going to set any records.  All shooting was at 100 yards.

Anyway, for those interested, some build details:
- LaRue Stealth SSSS, 16" with 11" handguard
- Leupold Mark 4 with in a LaRue LT-104 mount
- Geissele Trigger
- Magpul PRS Stock
- Troy BUIS set, LaRue-marked
- Harris Bipod on LaRue QD mount

First, a couple of groups using some 77 grain MK262-type loads.  Barely over an inch (all groups measured center-to-center).  For the conditions, and for just getting used to this setup, I was pretty pleased.

Second, a couple of groups using some Black Hills 77 grain MK262-type loads.  Under an inch... again, for the conditions, I'm diggin' it.

Third, a couple of groups using Wolf Performance Gold (Serbian) 75 grain BTHP loads.  Under an inch, including best group of the day.  Sweet.  (Remember, I'm not a competitor; I haven't shot for score since my 3-position smallbore days 20 years ago.  I'm sure trained skills would provide even better results.)  I haven;t really heard much about this ammo, but I'm rather impressed.  Below I've included a scan of the box end.

Finally, I put a few rounds (scrounged from my range box) of Georgia Arms 68 grain BTHP through the gun.  That target got wet (no pics), but before I trashed the target, the 5-shot group on there that I know was from this load was measured to be around 0.95".

Overall, I'm very, very pleased.  Four different loads all grouped just over an inch or less.

Incidentally, I was talking to a guy at work (an AR newbie) about uppers, including the LaRue SSSS.  He commented that, considering the complete package and top-notch components, the SSSS is a quite a value.  Now I've got additional, personally-generated data to support his conclusion!

Trying to decide between the 16" barrel or the 18".  Any chance you can show a side by side of these?  I will most likely go with the 13.2 handguard.  Lower will be a POF 415 billet w/ an LMT SOPMOD.  I'm thinking the 16" would probably LOOK better with my stock set-up, but I have several 16" guns, and I figure a little extra velocity from the 18" couldn't hurt.  Will most likely be using a 3.5x10 optic, or something similar.  Don't plan on shooting much past 300-400 yards.  Thanks!

Can the LaRue shop do a slightly customized Quad-S upper?

I am looking to get an upper built to pretty much the exact same specs, but with a PRI flip-up FS/gasblock and a Smith Vortex flash suppressor

Well, I attempted to order an Upper this morning from LaRue, but I later found out that they are severely backlogged and I wouldn't be able to receive my upper for 4-6 weeks with no definite schedule.  I have to decide this weekend whether to cancel the order or not because I need as much time on my rifle as I can get before my training class.

Sad to hear.  Sad that it hasn't come up on this board or on LaRue's site.
