So?  How short can they be?

I've seen 9mm barrels as short as 5 inches.

Yep, 6.5 on my OLY.

Is it not possible to make the barrel any shorter?

In what caliber?

How short do you expect to go?

6.5" is already ridiculously short for a 5.56.

I see no point other than stupidity for shorter barrels than what has already been mentioned on an AR.

5.56 and make the barrel stick out just past the mag well.  Lol I'm not in the market, I'm just wondering.

Considering the breech face is forward of the mag well, that would be just a bare cartridge sticking out from the front of the firearm.

If your using a blow back conversion (45, 9mm, 22lr) you could have a barrel with 1" of rifling and still reliably cycle.

Considering the overall size of pistol ARs, the only reason I would want less than 7", would be if I wanted it short enough to keep my ammo subsonic while using a suppressor.
