I've been keeping track of a lot of the threads in this forum lately, and I've noticed that there are a lot of XM177's being built or planned. Why this particular variant?

Just wondering.

Yep. I first came here (before the retro board began actually - retros were jsut a regular thread) wanting to build an XM177. Then I got sidetracked...
Now if I built an Xm177 type it would be a 649. (WHich I actually had all the parts for a few months ago and went in YET another direction. ) I'm as bad as a woman when it comes to building AR's. If I had the money I'd collect them like Imelda Marcos collected shoes, but times is tough.

I've never shot one.

If I luck into the right parts, one will be built, though. Until then, I'm sticking to rifles.

They are associated with SF, MAC-V-SOG, LRRPs, Rangers,
and other specialized recon units of the Vietnam War.

So... they have mistique, and adoration.

I have 3 XM177E2 Clones.

Maybe this would be the case if the "CAR-15" in COD black ops wasnt really just an m4 with a flat top upper and no carry handle

I bought mine because I always thought they looked cool (used to be a TV show on about Vietnam, don't remember the name, and one of the guys carried one).

I got it but didn't shoot it for awhile.  Then I did shoot it and the dog gone thing is awesomely accurate, up close anyway.  I've never shot it past 25 yds. or so but I could squirrel hunt and do head shots with it.  That rifle convinced me to get another AR15, then, as many of us know, more followed.

That show was probably "Tour Of Duty" and the Sgt,, Zeke Anderson as mentioned above carried a shorty!

I used to come home from school at around 3:30 every weekday and watch that show. I absolutely love it!

I carried a 609 every day for two years in Central America, so a 177E1 was a given.

There were several 629s in the unit I was "advising" so I built one of those too.

got a fondness for em.Carried a shorty for 10 years.they kinda fill the niche for some, it's like having an old friend around to talk to,laugh with, feel like your not alone, tell bed time stories to,prop ya up when ya had too much BMB33 or JW red/black label and keep the rats out with.keeps ya warm all over at night. You learn a weapon, doesn't matter what one you learn and you learn it very well and you are a hard one to beat.Your brain is the most feared weapon you have with the XM as just an extension of that brain.

I did my E2 as it is easier to build one that looks close to the real thing without having to go the SBR route.

Oh, and yeah, they're bad-ass!

Here's my Xm177E2.

We tried the XM177E1 without the moderator.  Put them right back on!  (Our LRRP unit was too low on the food chain to get the E2.)

Chuck - did you put them back on because of the blast? Noise? I'm just wondering because I've never fired a 10" AR but the Navy seems to use the Mk18 to great effect, as does Army EOD and other SF guys, and they aren't using a moderator - I just find it interesting and would like to hear more about your experience with the E1 w/o a moderator.

And the SP K-9 handlers were still carrying them in the early 80's. Andersen AFB, Guam, 1983.

I need to buld another one, I sold mine when I was unemployed last year. I hated to let it go because Kurt at KKF did the barrel work for me shortly before he passed away. I have a nice vinyl acitate two position stock, a BCG, and the handguards for another one so far.

We shot without the moderator when someone found they were not on very tight. The sound was loud with and without.  Without the moderator it seemed to shoot fire out about six feet. Not what you want.

I have two in the works.  One is a 649 that has been nearly complete for over a year, except the barrel.  Still waiting, but can't wait to get it to the range.  It will have a Single Point optic and will be just over 16" for a non NFA.

I decided to use an extra A1 upper and Brick moderator I had laying around to do a .22 XM177E2.  This one will have a .22 1/16 twist M4 barrel that HeatnBeat is going to reprofile for me.  (HB, that should be in the mail by the end of the week).  The neat thing is it will have the exterior dimensions identical to the real one, but still be over 16" since the barrel/bolt face are int the receiver more than a .223/5.56 barrel.  I took it to the range last week without a FSB or hand guards to function test the .22 components and it worked great.  Like driving a car without a hood - surprised the range master let me do it.  With the new CMMG bolt hold open actuator it will function the same as the regular gun, too.  I think it's going to be a really neat .22 retro.

Well the XM177E2 that I'm doing, long with a friend who's doing one, we both think they are just cool rifles, as does everyone else that is doing them.

So the consensus answer is "nostalgia" and "the cool factor"?

Very much off topic, but I love what I see! If I can kick this AR thing (which I'm having no luck doing), I can finish my first AK.

You should get one of those Tula mags for the one in the foreground.

I made an XM177E2 because I play pen and paper role playing games.  I took part in a playtest for a SEALs in Vietnam expansion set and the character I made for the test had one.  That got me reading more about them and I decided it was time to spend $200 on a small piece of fancy paper.

I was always interested in "CAR-15's" but didn't know more than that when I built my first AR as an attempt to make such (I wasn't even close).

My very first AR build was an E2 clone that 45Bravo helped me get to spec.  He did all my barrel work and re-park'd it all for me and it turned out amazing.  Sadly though, I ended up selling that upper.  But I'm still super-stoked on my midlength E1.

I dont really get the driving factor.
The long heavy flash hider and CAR h/g does nothing for me.
You could also say having an M16 and SBR has spoiled me.

For nostalgia reason I respect building one.
However it is no more effective than something I would build ( like a 14.7 with a perm A1, or 14.5 with A1 and spacers for 16" OAL)

The first time I saw one was during a layover at the airport in Danang. There was a dog handler dressed in tigerstripes, sitting on the floor in the corner. He had a muzzled, mean-looking German Shepherd lying on the floor next to him, and his XM leaned up against the wall. The guy just sat there for what seemed like hours sharpening a Gerber Mark II. I hadn't been in country that long, and that's one of the images that stays with me to this day.
