I got a scan of this picture today because my mother scanned some for veterans day.

This is my father somewhere in Vietnam in 1969, I thought the trapdoor  VFG on his CAR was pretty cool. I figured the retro forum was the place for this photo, enjoy

Looks more like a bird cage with a black plastic dust cap.

I think it is a 607 moderator, and it's the 2nd photo I've seen where it looks as though black tape was run over the muzzle. I'm wondering if a VN vet could verify this? I know they taped up the moderators commonly, but over the end of the muzzle?

The tape was to keep water and debris out. So yes, over the end of the muzzle.

I vote for black dust cap. It doesn't look long enough to be off of a 607. It's also too smooth over and around the muzzle to be tape.

It does. But a little long.
