Pretty neat, never heard of these before. Can't help but hum the Ghost Busters theme while looking at it (Who ya' gonna call?).
Thanks for sharing!

GE E63 Personnel Detector (Manpack)

60s-Vintage Experimental "People Sniffer" designed for use in Vietnam. Built for Aberdeen Proving Grounds, on government contract by General Electric's Ordnance Department. Really a neat piece of gear, looks like a miniature infrared-absorbtion spectrophotometer for detecting human scent. Basically complete, save for headphone and battery pack. Toothed-ball drive belt for vacuum pump needs replacement. Mounts to LC2 pack frame.

IIRC it had problems with picking up wildlife and couldn't adapt well to varying diets.

The article said it can't tell the difference between Americans and Vietnamese.

The Vietnamese also hung the company shit bucket on trees to mess with them.  In theory its a great idea but it needs a lot of refinement.  ammonia concentrations vary greatly in different people's sweat for different reasons.  It wasn't hard to get false positives and negatives apparently.

With today's tech it would be great as a replacement for bomb and drug dogs.

SOUTHCOM has been funding the development of an aerial sensor that could detect chemicals as a way of detecting drug labs through foliage in places like Colombia.  Still a ways off from what I understand.  The application for detecting explosives is also noted.

Not quite on topic, but on the first page, under the heading "A Scientific Puzzle," they are talking about what we now know to be prions (like what cause Mad Cow disease).  And this is 1967!  Crazy!

It actually kind of looks like a rifle-mounted flame thrower to me.

Evidently from what I've read, these worked much better from helicopters instead of on the ground.
