I have about 2K of .223 and I want to store it appropriately.  They are currently in cardboard boxes and I was planning on getting some of these:

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?type=product&cmCat=Related_IPL_217617&id=0065905216741a

to put them all in.  They will be kept in the basement and I live in the Northeast. There is a dehumidifier that runs down there all the time, except when I forget to empty the bucket.

Is there anything else I need to do to the boxes while they are sitting there.

When I first read the thread title, I thought it was Bulk ammo SHORTAGE... and my reaction was "What??? Again!!!???"

Then I read the replies

I use surplus .50 ammo cans, fwiw.

One "Fat Fifty" also known as a SAW ammo can, will hold 60-30rd boxes of IMI M855...thats 1800rds as well a half dozen dessicant packs or a couple 40 gram aluminum rechargable dessicant containers.
Granted it weighs about 65lbs...but if you're storing it, and not opening it often, all you really need is one...for the quantity you mentioned.

This. And a regular .50 ammo can will hold 35 - 30 rd boxes of IMI with dessicant, and you can lug it around pretty easy, if zombies ain't chasing you.

I use silica desiccant & Kraft clay packs in my cans.  Make sure whatever containers you use have a good seal and lable it so you don't have to open the cans to find out the contents.  I use #5 shipping tags w/reinorced holes.  I have one computer file that prints the 4 3/4 by 2 3/8 tags.  Stack the ammo up nicely and never open the cans till you need them. Packed this way the ammo should out last you as long as you don't go opening and closing the cans.

Don't go that route. Maybe for temp storage for ammo you're bringing to the range, but not for storage.

The plastic sides deform very easily, which can break the seal. I have several myself, and they are crap for long-term storage.

Get yourself a dozen of those "excellent condition" .50 cal cans from armygear.net.

http://www.armygear.net/ag/store/search.html?bs=1&em=1&su=1&fi=products&st=db&tf=prod_group%2cdescription&sf=prod_group&se=Ammo%20Cans%20%26%20Boxes

Get some silica gel or clay packs and you are GTG.

The .50 cal cans seal tight as a drum, are stackable (I stack them up to 8 cans high), and if they should fall, I'm betting they will stay closed. The Cabela's cans will probably break and spill your ammo.

If you need more room, try the 40mm and 20mm cans. I prefer the 40mm because they are slimmer than the 20mm. You can get a 4-pack of 40mm cans from Wideners for $64 plus shipping.
http://wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=9024&dir=668|827

They have a huge gasket and seal air tight.

I have a couple of the cabelas plastic cans as they were free with ammo orders.

They SUCK!!!!!

I only put mags and such in them.  Whenever I pick them up, the seal breaks/opens as the plastic flexes... I would guess it would be FAR worse with the weight of ammo over mags/cleaning supplies.

Don't waste your money on them unless they are free with ammo that was at a fair price.

I echo the negative sentiments against the plastic box. I have about 6 or so that came with Cabela's ammo orders and I used them at first. Then I found that I was having to recharge my desiccant packs (bought on ebay) way too often and realized that it was because of the plastic flexing and not getting a good seal.

Now they store canning lids, papers and a few spare gun parts.

Spend the few extra $$ and go with the military cans. You can get by with three 50 cal cans for your 2k of 223 if you keep them in boxes or clips. That is provided that it's all the same brand and you don't need to separate multiple types.

I like to put 'em in stripper clips, then back in the original boxes.

Make certain to keep the boxes off a concrete floor –– moisture will come up thru the concrete.

If you want to just keep only ~2 cases, you can go to Walmart, buy a cooler, put the ammo and some dessicant in, and tape it shut.
Good for storage, not carrying around.  The handles will break if you try and lift it.

I use stripper clips and seven pocket bandoleers stored in .50 caliber ammo cans. They are a little heavy but not bad - just enough weight to take a zombie's head off with one good swing.

I get 840 rounds per box and there is a bit of room for dessicant packs but I don't see the need.

If the ammo can is in good shape with an intact seal, moisure is not going to be an issue as, provided you don't pack it when it is wet, the amount of moisture in the air within the can is not enough to create any corrosion issues even over decades of stroage.

If you live in a swamp, dessiant still won't do any good as the bottom of the can will rust out and let water in before the dessicant adds any real value.

We need to consider that the US government stored ammo for 50 plus years in ammo cans long before desicant was ever considered with no ill effect on the ammunition. Same for the commies with their sardine can approach.

Dessicant really only makes sense in cases where you need to reudce the humidity in areas with active air exhange - such as in a gun safe where it is not air tight.

Yes, but they can rust if the paint is chipped or scratched.
A little paint goes a long way. A can of spray from wal-mart in OD green will cover several ammo cans.  If you really want to get serious there are some extremely durable piants out there that when applied with a roller are exceptionally durable and would still cover all the metal after dragging the can home from the range behind your Jeep.    Then there is cold galvanizing you can apply prior to adding the surface paint that will make a scratch a non issue in terms of rust.

It's just an issue of how far you want to go.

If you go the "cooler, tape and dessicant" route save yourself some money and just get one of the $4-5 plastic tubs at wal-mart in a suitable size.  It does not have to be insulated just able to be taped closed to eliminate most of the air exhcange.  Most of them are virtually air tight when you run a 2' strip around the edge of the lid and then fold it under against the tub - some may have holes near the "handles' and if so tape them over as well.  That approach also keeps out the casual lookers as it takes a knife or some effort to remove.  I'll conisder doing that to ensure the ammo cans are more or less dry if storing ammo in an area where it is always damp, or where I may get a foot or two of flood water from a hurricane - but again I think the actual dessicant use is a waste of effort and adds nothing.

My main SHTF ammo in 5.56mm is Prvi Partisan which comes in 200 round sealed plastic bags. It think it's more sensible to shove the bags in cans. A .50 can will fit three 200 round packs with some room on the side for a couple mags if you want. My second line SHTF ammo is M855 that came packed on clips in bandoleers, in cans, in a wooden crate. My SHTF 7.62x39mm came on clips in boxes in a sealed can inside a crate. My STHF 7.62 NATO came in boxes in battle packs in a steel can. In sort, I'm mainly relying on original, sealed packaging to provide moisture resistance and the metal cans and wooden crates are just to provide some physical protection. As for loading mags in SHTF, I have enough ammo in mags that if I have to shoot it all before getting time to reload mags, I'm not likely to survive such an encounter.

OP, surplus AMERICAN ammo cans, a fresh coat of paint, and a packet of desicant, stored on a pallet off the ground ought to make your ammo outlast your great grandkids.

If you have folks in your house that can't resist opening containers, you can make a field expedient tamper evident seal with some wire, splitshot fishing weights and heavy duty pliers.

I agree with BSTOCK on this.

I keep my long term stash in ammo cans in my mancave.
Some is packed in bandoleers (55gr in seven pocket, 62gr in 4 pocket), some is stored in the original cardboard boxes.
Desiccant is probably overkill, but it certainly does not hurt anything.
All  cans are labelled so 'no opening to remember what is in there'

I have one of those Cabella plastic cans (I got with some ammo years ago).
Filled up, I would not trust it to carry ammo as I think it would probably fail (too flimsy) and it does not seal well.

+1 Again thank you for the link. I'm almost about to buy a few, but would you happen to know the width and length of the MTM 50rd Shotgun Shell Trays? I'm curious if it will fit in a 20MM Ammo Can (internal dim - 17.25"L x 7.25"W X 14"H).

And just to share with everyone...I dont' have pictures yet because it is a work in progress...

I have one dozen 50Cal Ammo Cans and am in the process of refinishing them like CJan_NH (Thanks CJan_NH - your repainted cans are an inspiration). And BSTOCK has a great idea how to categorize and label them. I plan to fill each 50Cal Ammo Can with about 1000rds 5.56NATO on strippers in cardboards, but no bandoleers. The 50Cal's are for mobility and are relatively easy to transport.

Later, if I have a "Fallout Shelter" or a SHTF fortress I can afford to build, I already have nine 20MM Ammo Cans that need a good refinishing/repainting.  Each 20MM Ammo Can can store 4320rds of 5.56NATO on strippers, in cardboards, in 180 rd "battle packs". I got a VISIO drawing of that layout if you're interested. Still working the details there. Yeah, I know, that's a LOT fo ammo. If it ever comes back down in price, and I can afford it, then I'll stockpile.

Just for the peace of mind, I'd nail a horizontal band-board across the ends of those cut 2x4s, just to keep 'em from racking/collapsing.  It'd be a shame to have to restack that pile.  BTW, it already looks like the pallet is sagging a good bit from the aspect of the spacing between the cans from bottom to top of pile on the left.
