Hey guys, I had my neighbor over and was showing him the builds I've got going on, and now he wants me to build him one. but what he said he really wants is a chrome finish on his. How do I go about obtaining this look? Obviously it doesn't actually have to be hard chromed finished, just something that has the same look to it.

GPI Custom Gunworks has a stainless look anodized finish that looks pretty cool.

ok that's cool and all, but is there a way to strip the finish off and somehow make it look like a chrome finish?

Yeah I know it will be, but if that's what he wants that's what I shall deliver.

There are chrome looking powder coats out there, not sure how receivers take to powder though.

Question...as I'm new to the different plating techniques, why couldn't u just have it chrome plated?  Or u could have it polished then sealed. It would be shiny then!  . Thought about doing it myself.

chrome powders don't look that shiny. They look AMAZING before clear coating, but sadly, they MUST be clear coated.  This still might be the best option

best bet for a true chrome look would be to have a professional polish it.  It would look pretty good, but would have to be a safe queen

Did he mention that he wanted high-polish, matte or brushed look?

If you can find someone that can "bright finish" anodize the aluminum.

There's also an actual paint that makes items actually match a chrome plating called Mirrachrome.

Just get it chromed....For small peices such as these (I get alot of stuff plated car related) you likely wont even have to pay the rack fee if you dont need em yesterday (IE they can work them into another job this takes on average an extra two days but well worth the cost savings)

I got alot more stuff plated than that (the entire front bracketry for a V8) for $75 bucks from my plater who does awesome work BTW...

Give em a call...talk to em about what you want (there is various types of Plate specs. snap a few picks and email em to em so they can give you an accurate quote....I dont have anything to do with these company other than being a happy repeat customer.

I'd go the Nickel Boron route from WMD Guns. Leave the plastics black. Have the receivers, barrel, rail (if it has one), receiver extension, bolt carrier assembly done in Nickel Boron. I'd leave the screws, levers, fasteners all black unless he specifically wants them done in nickel boron also.

he didn't specify, but I guarantee he wants it a high polish look.

Man, talk about thinking too hard....

The receivers are aluminum, polish that shit up and lacquer it.
You can get a mirror finish on it with a little bit of effort. Hard part
is getting them without a finish or removing existing.

I am about too, because I'm having a real ethical/moral dilemma with making this thing chromed out. It's going to take quite a bit of work to achieve an awful look.
