Thanks to reader Alexandr in Russia, we have a new look at a prototype for the AEK-971 rifle, this time the military 6П68 variant. The Russian armed forces have used variants of the AK-47 rifle ever since the end of World War II, and the design is starting to show its age especially compared to the latest advances from the Belgians and Israelis. The latest design uses a polymer receiver instead of the old stamped sheet metal, a telescoping stock instead of the folding design, and uses the same balanced recoil system as the AN-94 (which uses two pistons and two gas chambers synchronized through a gear to reduce recoil).

Finally something that looks like a new firearm, rather than stuff retrofitted to an AK.

I like the looks of this one much more than the AK12.

I wonder how comfortable that stock is? DannerTax

I wish they were not copying HK form so blatantly!

Looks sick, just wish the handguard was a little longer.

I like it. I still love the wood/steel classic look of the AKM.
Everything must change at some point though.

Looks like the actual shoulder pad rotates 180* into position. There is no way you could use the irons with the stock up like that.

Actualy looks like there is a hole to look through on the bottom of the stock.  I like when can I buy one!

Looks like an MP5 fucked an AK-74. Pretty dope, i like it

Maybe when the stock is collapsed, but when open and against your shoulder it think it must rotate to allow you to look through the sights.

Looks good except the lame HK style stock.  I prefer the older folder it use to have.

I'd let it pee on me. Finally an actual update to a 66 year old design

Looks like it has an SVD style adjustable gas regulator. Could be wrong though.

Looks pretty good to me, the stock design is not my favorite. With an optics rail on top, the left side folding stock can still be used.

At least we won't have to hear people whine about sight radius anymore.

Meh....it's ok. Too much HK, not enough AK.

Why do Russians hate cheek weld so much? Seriously- that stocks looks retarded, chin weld just to use the sights?

They probably base their designs off of a soldier wearing a bulky helmet. I'm sure they could give a shit less about what would work for civilians shooting at the range.

Cool! Wonder what the chances are of a civvie version ever making it here.

The more I look at it the more I hate it.  I hate HK style stocks. Otherwise, I would love to own one.

In terms of cheek weld the stock looks to be identical to an underfolder and plenty of people like those.
It's not ideal, but it sure wouldn't keep me from buying one.

I think it depends how wide the struts on the stock are.  Underfolders are pretty wide.. but something like a collapsable stock on an MP5 isn't as wide and it a lot more comfortable.

This one doesn't look bad at all.  The buttpad area is a little odd to me.

Very interesting. I wonder if it achieves the same performance with two rounds in the barrel at the same time like the AN94.

The AEK-971 originally had the folding stock, and the design has been around for a couple decades. The HK style is a newer design. We'll probably never see either rifle here, although the AEK has pretty much been export-only as the military chose the 74M.

The rifle has obviously gone through a number of changes since it first came out with the side folding stock if you compare it to that new pic in the OP.

Looks like an AN-94, Daewoo K1, AK-74, and an HK had an orgy resulting in this bastard child.  I like it!  Sadly we'll never see it...

The AN94 is not as complicated as it appears. I had a chance to operate the rifle during a foreign weapons class years ago. The hardest part was installing the wire cable into the pulley system, everything else is pretty easy if your understand mechanics as a "gun guy".  Sadly, the class was in a classified building so I couldn't take pictures.

Not a copy, not anything HK came up with homogeneously. The "HK Style" you refer to was from CETME. First introduced by HK in their G3.

Any such stylings you perceive in this to be HK, are mistaken since they never were HK's to begin with.
