What is the difference?

I love my ex's P228, but now that I'm thinking of buying my own I have been looking at the P229. I really can't tell what the difference is.

Any advice?

The P229 is a little heavier as it has a milled slide.

228 is 9mm only.  229 was released for .40 and .357 SIG in addition to 9mm.  It has a heavier slide made in a different process.

I have one of each:

The 228 is more highly regarded as it comes from the "Golden Age" of SIGs but the 229 is an excellent pistol.

When the 229 was first released, it had two different frame sizes, one for 9mm and one for .40/.357.  In the last year, they went to one frame size.  You'll now see two different kind of magazines, 229 and 229-1.  229 mags work for all guns.  229-1 won't work for older frames.

I've trained with both the 228 and 229 in 9mm. In fact, the 229/9mm is my duty weapon. I prefer the 228 –– it's a little slimmer and easier to handle. The 229 seems overbuilt for a 9mm pistol.

If you're going to go 9mm in a 229, I'd recommend just getting a 226.  Why have a 229 with the width of a 40/357 when you want a 9mm.

if you get a chance to hold both at the same time, you can feel that the 229 is nose heavy & why folks say the 228 has the best balance of any of the sigs.

i've got 2 ka 228's & 4 229/40's.

I really miss the 228.....the 229 just doesn't feel the same.

Wow. Thank you all. It sounds like the P228 is what I might end up getting.

would the E2 grip kit work on a p228?

Yes, get both. I have a P228 that I wouldn't part with for anything, plus I want a 229 since I sold my G23 a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to try and find an older one locally if it's priced reasonably.

The P228 balances well

The P229 is nose heavy.

Yes.  I had a 229, but now only have a 228.

The 229 is fine but is a little too big for a compact pistol IMO, especially if you only want 9mm.
The 229 was noticably thicker to me (it is thicker), particularly when carrying.
I sold my 229 and kep the 228.  It's a nice gun, and better fits the compact role.

Good luck finding a new org style P228 model. There are some of the "new" release P228 w/rails to be found.

I just bought one of the new ones. Have to wait for it to get out of gun jail first.

I have an older P229 in 9mm, a P229R DAK in .40 (was told it was part of a contract overrun for the Feds), and a P228R all German construction. All are excellent pistols, as are my West German P226, P220, and P245. I've yet to experience these problem Sigs I hear so much about... Then again, min likely all pre-date the problem period.
