If the only round type being sold in 9mm was FMJ what grn would you buy for self defense? Why?

Well, something I could shoot well.  See if you can try a few.

Otherwise, magazine capacity might be the next important factor.

I would change calibers.  No way do I want FMJ anything for serious shooting.

124 gr Nato spec load.  good enough for our military to shoot through their M9s at people, should be fine for you.Winchester 124 gr NATO

Limited to 9mm FMJ?

My first choice would be a 124 gr. or 147 gr. FMJFP.

My second choice would be the 124 gr. FMJRN (M882).

It doesn't matter at all.  All will over penetrate and leave a 9mm hole.

Try the Expanding Full Metal Jackets if you're being restricted my Law.

+1
Laws restricting JHPs are the best reason to have EFMJs. They are not perfect, but work, and will be better than any standard FMJ.
Otherwise, if you can't find any EFMJ, I would suggest you take the advice of one of the previous posters and get a 147gr or heavier bullet preferably with a flat nose.

Ive always thought it was:

Ball (FMJ) wound to remove people from battlefield
HP= remove life from people

+1. Use something you practice with, so you can put them where they count. 9mm FMJ has been doing the job since 1902. Just know your target and what lies beyond it, as it will over penetrate.

I'd go for something like this if I could. As said, though, probably not going to matter.

The heaviest available, that way when I chucked it up in a drill press to manufacture my own HP I'd have more meat to work with.

What this guy said.

I might go with American Eagle's 147gr. FMJ-FP round due to the broad, flat point though.

Winchester also makes a 147 FMJ-TC load with a flat point. As long as they fed 100% in my firearm, this is what I'd use in a 9mm if I was restricted to FMJ type ammo.

Flat point bullets will crush more tissue than a round nose profile.

And they will also over-penetrate even worse.

Given the OP's situation, what would you suggest Zhukov ?

only if you live in new york!

if you have to use ball, try the "powerball" expanding FMJ profile first, and then go with a 147gr or a truncated cone 124gr load

Not understanding the NY comment? I live in NY and HP's are available and legal for civi's. The only thing I could think of is maybe some city ordinance regarding the five boroughs (NYC).

To me, a 9mm FMJ for self defense is better than a 0mm FMJ (i.e. no gun) for self defense.

YMMV

Weaker calibers have been weeded out over time, by not seeing wide-spread use, like 25 acp and 32 acp and all those tiny-ass stupid calibers that are rare and ineffective. Strangely enough, 9mm is the most common handgun caliber in the world. You have to figure it must do something right.

I think it's New Jersey that doesn't allow HP unless you're a LEO.

Exactly, which is why I can't understand the NY comment unless it was just a simple mistake.
