Milt Sparks Summer Special II

I tend to prefer IWB holsters because I don't have to worry about a concealment garment.  The jacket-wearing months are pretty short where I live, and my daily wardrobe doesn't lend itself to a sport jacket, a "photojournalist" vest, or other exterior item of clothing.  Wearing my shirt untucked over an IWB holster is the easiest solution for me.

The Sparks SS II has the perfect combination of features for me:

  • "sweat shield" that keeps my T-shirt out of the holster for reholstering purposes, and protects the safety and plunger tube area from sweat and lint.

  • Forward cant which keeps the gun butt from protruding backwards and making itself known as an awkward shape under clothing, especially when bending over.

  • A pair of loops with snap fasteners that allow you to "straddle" a belt loop on your pants and are easy to put on and take off.

  • Rough-side-out leather that helps keep the holster anchored.  The smooth side of the leather faces your gun, and I've noticed this helps preserve the finish because there is no nap inside the holster to attract and hold abrasive dust.

I've had this particular holster about three years.  I alternate between the one pictured and two other holsters for carry, so I can't say exactly how long it will last under a strict regimen of practice drills and IDPA competition.

I have taken several training classes with this holster, rolled around on the ground with it, and carried it for long, hot days on end, and it seems to be holding up fine so far.  The only complaint I have is that over time, the leather will soften a bit and the mouth will collapse somewhat, making it a little slower to reholster.  This is an unfortunate reality with most leather holsters in my experience, so I can't say it's a flaw unique to the SS II.

The holster retains the gun well, keeping it secure even if shaken briskly upside down.  It rides high enough above the belt that I can get a good firing grip on the gun in one motion.

The highest compliment I can give the holster is that I will definitely be buying another one if this one wears out.  There are similar designs from other makers, but none that exceed the quality, reputation, and value of the SS II.
