Any opinions on which ammo is the best for personal defense? Preferably in either 155 or 165 grain.

I am looking for a good performer for my M&P Compact 40.

Thanks guys!

IMO, the best personal defense round is any of them in the 180 grain variety.

I have used Speer Gold Dot and the Winchester Ranger SXT.  My redneck expansion tests yielded great results for both.

I carry 180 grn Ranger SXT from winchester.  But i got a chance to shoot the hornady critical defense rds and they look good as well

165gr in Federal HST, Bonded Remington Golden Sabers, or 155 or 165 gr Speer Gold Dot.

Good performance in even the shorter barrels is well documented

+1

My preferences are Gold Dot, HST, and bonded Golden Saber. I have no experience with Ranger or Corbon. (Haven't been able to find any. )

But read the link ALPHAGHOST posted for you ––  it's great information.

or 165s if I can find them. Nice balance between the weights for my service and sub-compact models.

180 gr. Gold Dots.

I used to think 155s were the way to go.  Then I tried to kill something with them.  180s are better.

I currently carry 180 grain HST as my  defensive .40 S&W loading.

I have a case of 165 grain Ranger T  and a few boxes of 180 grain Gold Dot in my safe that I wouldn't hesitate to carry.

They all work flawlessly in my .40 M&P which is my daily carry.

But rightly or wrongly,  I'm still partial to 180 grain bullets.

I prefer the 180 grain loads on a personal basis. I like the Winchester 180 grain Ranger load as well as the 180 grain Federal HST (currently carrying in my PX4 Storm).

My PD issues us 155gr. Speer Gold Dot....they did some testing and it performs well with car windsields and expands good.....it has more energy than the Gold Dot 230gr. 45acp we used to carry.  Look at what your local LE carries....could help in court if you ever have to go.

I use 165gr. Federal HSTs in my 3.5" barreled Glock27 FWIW, they chrono at 1100fps(445 ft. lb.energy).
I have read that the 180gr round is the better choice for stopping power, but I chose the 165 because my bullet mold and the thousands of bullets I have for my 10mm and .40 are 155-170gr. so I went with what I practice with.
I don't believe the 15grains will make a great deal of difference in a defensive situation.
