I wouldn’t buy one of these thinking you can hunt at 100 yards or anything but it sure seems neat for the cheap price of admission. |

Cool.
Any primer flow into the firing pin hole with the 357? |

If it did the opening of the action could have been a bit stiffer.
The H&R shotgun firing pin hole is a bit larger than the SB2 rifle frame or the late model 357/44 only frames. |

You have to be ready when you beak the action open as it ejects the adapter with plenty of force! |

However, they are a super simple design, and if you had to make parts for one you could do it with hand tools. I shortened mine to 20", parkerized it, and refinished the wood. Took it with me on a canoe trip to the Boundary Waters. They look like ass with the baby poop stained wood and poor metal finish, but if I found one for $100 or less I'd snatch it. |

Has anyone changed a firing pin on a old nef? I bought a old 20ga "barkeep special " for 60 bucks. But need to fix the bent firing pin. Looked on ebay and found replacement pins, but not sure if I can do it.
|
|
|
It's pretty easy to take apart.
Putting them back together is trickier. Just make sure you tap the cross pins out from the side that doesn't have the serrations on the end of the pin. And reinstall them as they came out. |

A really neat idea... especially in light of the current climate.
I did a lot with a .22/410 Savage. It was the only long gun I owned for a while. I would not be sad with a 410 single shot. A good option. Thanks for sharing. |

My very first gun was a NFE SS in 20 gauge from the local KMart when I was 12. I remember reading through the book it came with and all of the various barrels options etc.

I've got one on my H&R 12ga. It's got a little v-notch to align it with the front sight bead so you get it on straight but it's fairly easy to bump it. I keep saying I'm going to order one of the style that just replaces the bead but I haven't gotten around to it. |

While practical for storage, I found those to be very uncomfortable for shooting. In the 90's I had one on a 357 "Survivor" model. It was replaced.
Both my 20ga and 410 Tamers got conventional stocks after I brought them home also. |

I passed on the pistol grip stock as I didn't think it would be comfortable and it looked like a hard plastic butt instead of the rubber pad on the traditional style- something my busted up shoulder definitely appreciates. I also didn't think it would carry as well in the hand or be as handy for snap shooting; I use mine for rabbit hunting because it's short and fast and it's not like I'm really going to get a follow up shot in heavy brush and undergrowth. I have thought about buying a stock pouch though to carry extra stuff with the gun.
|
|

Agreed, the pistol grip stock does have the hard plastic butt plate, so the standard synthetic stock might be the better way to go. I like the idea of a stock pouch for carrying the extra gear.

My son has a old single shot breakdown that was his Grandfather.
It is very unique as it is marked .410/.45LC. I imagine it is over a full choke to allow for the .45 to be fired. |

When I was twelve, I managed to get to get two .410 slugs into a white tail deer with a .410 single shot shotgun. I shot it standing still with the first one, and it was running away on the second shot, and I was sure I had missed that shot. But we found the entry wound, an inch below the butthole, later.

A couple of years ago I picked up an NEF 12ga single shot and had the barrel cut to 18.5 inches and a large silver bead installed by my local smith. Then I picked up the Chiappa set of 8 long
rifled barrel inserts with the case. Can now shoot .380, 9mm, 40SW, 45acp, 38/357, .44mag/44spl .410, 20ga. I need to get a .22LR to complete the collection. Mine rides on the four wheeler also, usually with either the .44mag adapter in it or just a 12ga buckshot in case a coyote happens by as has happened a few times out in the woods. Been about 50 years since I had a hammer fired shotgun....my first gun was a Winchester 12ga at 13 years old....the thing kicked like a mule. |
|
|
I've got a box of parts here somewhere with a bunch of Savage/Stevens parts, probably enough to put together two each in 12, 20, and maybe 410. I've been a fan of the savage 24 or Stevens 22/410 from my youth. Have many of those too. I've also found many FourTenner adapters over the years, the first really available adapter to sub guage a sho tr gun. They actually pattern well usually as well.
Nice thing about the Savage 94 design is no transfer bar to break. Has a rebounding hammer for safety. I worked at a camp where we used H&Rs for skeet, firing sometimes hundreds of rounds a day per gun. I kept several of the transfer bars on hand, and replaced a lot of them. |
