How can I tell which one my PVS is?

You would need to see the actual tube numbers(serial, NSN, ...) and the good folks around here could tell you which one it is.

Easiest way is to just ask them. If it's not Milspec then technically it's not Omni, but they can probably tell you roughly what it's equal to.

David

I looked at the data sheet and some of the numbers seem to match between VI and VII. I guess it don't matter.

When did you get it?  What does the spec sheet say?

I got it end of Feb. this year, the spec sheet says 2/9/2011.

I have a question maybe somebody could help me out. I have a varo image intensifier  NSN: 5855-01-083-9051 it was sold to me as a kollsman, but I can't seem to find anything about it. Anybody know anything about those? I want to power it up to check function but I also don't want to fry it with too much power.

This is interesting info, thanks for posting.

Since I have only used one PVS14 (Opmod, ITT Pinnacle), how does say Omni V and later compare to one another? Is the difference really noticeable between them?

Omni IV is when tubes really got very good. Advances past that are minor except for autogating.

ETA: I still have and use many Omni IV tubes.. They perform great and I love them !!

It is that 14"D" that I bought from you off the EE before there was an "official" TNVC or a NV forum on arfcom.  It sure seems much better than the 27.4 SNR would indicate, and pretty much everyone who has tried it side-by-side with my "higher" spec OMNI VII prefers it.  Maybe one day it will get a single battery housing.  Just out of curiosity, what riflescope housings will the tube work with?

It was really really really hard to rationalize $3k+ and there was a helluva lot less info available back then, so it was a huge leap of faith; but it has turned out to be one of the best items that I have ever purchased in any realm.  Thank you again.

Under the omniIII heading on the top chart under tubes produced, it reads:

MX-10160C/UV

Is this a typo, or should it be MX-10130C/UV?

I think there were 10130C's under that contract not 10160C's...

I was hoping you could help me out with grading what kind of tube I have

It's a mx-10130 c/uv  made in the mid 90s and the c/uv is listed as a omni 2 but that's from the mid 80s and I was thinking that since mine is made in the mid 90s when omni 3 and 4 were out that it could possibly be closer to that category then omni 2. Is that possible? Thank you for your time

I have an MX10130 b/uv with an expiration date of 12/94. From the list above it looks like it's possibly a very early Omni 2 contract?

First of all, thanks a lot for this great forum and thread!

I came across to a tube with this numbers in it:

ITT 272867-9-057
S/N 348393 DC0739

According to the owner it has 1800 FOM, min resolution of 65-67 lines and s/n 22, that would be an Omni IV or V.

What do you think?

PS. I looked for for the intro thread but didn't find it.

Omni IX.

It's here. Sorry I've been too busy to write about it.

Just a little quiet notice here, since I haven't dragged out my old tables in almost a decade... But, quite a few laughed when I mentioned the new spec and for some reason, everyone missed it, so I'm not sure whether it was really well understood in the community, since even defence isn't talking about it from what I gather, but hey, it's public and it's relevant to the discussion, so I will update the tables at some point, though I doubt anyone will notice otherwise if I just quietly post here for the moment while I fix the tables up...

And the usual ITAR disclaimer - Yeah, it's public. PUBLIC DOMAIN. THE US GOVERNMENT RELEASED THE SPECIFICATION INTO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN - though all the copies still say otherwise like so much other classified stuff, so I'm going to keep it to the general stuff for the moment, and don't go asking me for copies of the spec.

Well, what did you expect? They always release the Civvy version into the public domain. It does affect aviation after all. Well, that and the Omni VII MX11769 spec. And maybe a few weapon specs... But they always release the baseline Omni spec to the public each time they change it.

What's new in the 2020 Omni IX specification?
Quite a lot it seems.

Min S/N = 27 is now considered EOL and 33 is the new threshold.  WOW.... !!!!!

Res = 72lp center, 64lp edge or ANYWHERE else.  BIG change here....  Makes me wonder which manufacturer stuffed this up.
Bright Light = 36lp ( Still sucks.... They need to address that, but not in this release it seems - Photonis is kicking ass here Mr Trump... )
Shock =75g ( ie, Civvy version, Aviation etc.... )
Size: 17.5 - same same....
Min Gain of 70K.... Neat.
MAX EBI is reduced to 2.0 - I suspect filmed tubes are on the way out... Actually, much of this document makes it look like that.
HALO - 0.75mm MAX... And get this, it has to be measured THROUGH A REAL OBJECTIVE LENS... eg, ANVIS lens... Cool eh?

Oh yeah, nearly forgot.... They declassified unfilmed. It's about time...

Filmed Min PC - 2200
Unfilmed Min PC - 1700

@ 830 = Filmed 240, unfilmed 185
@ 880 = Filmed 120, unfilmed 90

Anyway, this one is fairly radical and I still haven't completed a full analysis of the new Omni IX standard, but it's pretty cool. Maybe NVGDude or Vic can add some more?

David.

That's how I read it...  I suppose for the sake of simplicity we should call it FOM2400.

Since a few people are asking, it's MIL-PRF-A3314408

This is the new spec that the manufacturers are looking at. Still draft and not ratified at this point.

I’m not sure I see the writing on the wall for filmed tubes. EBI going down from 2.5 to 2.0 max seems totally reasonable for filmed tubes, and the resolution and SNR for filmed stuff seems like it’s been on the increase the last few years. I could see it getting tough to meet the Halo requirements.

OK, if there was any chance that the specs were going to be withdrawn, or claimed published in error, I think that likelihood has well and truly passed.

Here's how to get the new Omni IX specification directly....

Go to https://beta.sam.gov/
Search for "MIL-PRF A3314408" without the quotes.

You will get one hit. Open it. Go to the bottom. Public release of specification can be located there.

Enjoy :)
David.

Been researching but thought I’d ask here and hope someone knows?
Just picked up another L3 PVS14 with contract #W91CRB-11-D-0083, NSN# 5855-01-432-0524
Can anyone tell me about it?
All I’ve found looked like it should be Omni VIII?

20UM is a standard tube. An Omni tube would likely have a contract designator in that place, for example Omni VIII 10160s are 10160FG-SA-C01-1602 and would generally not have a data sheet.

Yeah but under the heading of who gives a fuck, those are pretty awesome specs.  You can call it ACME Road Runner Detection Systems and I'd still buy it.

Props to Hawk for digging this shit up.  Seems as tho we are on the cusp of another tube break-through.  In another few years Filmless might be the only game in town.  And maybe prices will drop a bit on 33.0+ tubes when they are no longer state of the art.  So for sure, I'm always one step behind, but it's still very good kit.

There was a guy on another thread asking about -7's, and so I came here to look up ye olde specs, and damn if they weren't spot on what he posted, for something mid-90's.  We're talking 19-ish SNR and maybe 1200 FOM.

Then I thought about my '07, "Omni VII" ITT Pinnacle tube, which is prolly 25-ish and 2200.

And finally, my new binos which are "Elbit" HP+, and 31, and 2300-ish.

The progression has been amazing.  Maybe just little improvements from Omni to Omni, but the cumulative effect is massive.
