I have been meaning to take these pics/make this post for over a week now and life has simply intervened.

I am not a DIY guuy when it comes to firearms finishing/refinishing. The few times I have tried such I have been most unhappy with the results (my fault entirely, not the products used). This time I went with professionals, and I'm glad I did.

I had two of my 10/22 receivers engraved for NFA registration not that long ago. They were old and used to begin with, but they came back from the engraver noticeably more scratched and gouged in places (I have since changed engravers

). I decided that I wanted them refinished before I put the Form 1s in the mail, but was unsure what finishes to use (one black, the other "stainless") and whom to have do the work. I thought about Robar (I've been thrilled with their finishes over the years) but they charge as much for a little stripped 10/22 receiver as they would for a full-sized receiver and I just thought that was excessive.

Woody, the owner of Gulf Coast Shooting, is a long time Arfcommer with whom I've corresponded in the past and I'm pretty sure we had some EE exchanges years ago. Ever since I found out he/his shop does finishing work, I'd been waiting for an excuse to send something to him and try it out (keeping the $$$ in-state and in the "Arfcom family" both appeal to me). So I contacted him to discuss these receivers. Since I am NFA'ing these I wanted something durable and he recommended I try the Cerakote H-series, "Graphite Black" for the black one and "Satin Mag" for the stainless. He further suggested that I have the trigger housings finished to match at the same time, and I'm glad he did.

I could not be happier with the results...

The worst gouges are barely visible and you can't see any of the minor scratches at all, plus I am very happy with the look and feel of the finishes. Only time will tell about the durability, but the things I read about Cerakote are encouraging. I am going to go ahead and re-assemble these as rifles for now for testing, etc., until the Form 1s come back approved some time this summer. I'll post more pics when I get around to putting them together, so you can see how the colors look against the bbls, stocks, etc.

In the meantime, the only question is what gun(s) will I send him next, and for what finishes... but there will be a "next," and probably sooner rather than later.

ETA 2 things:

1) These pics/the lighting probably don't do the finishes justice, but I had dragged my feet long enough in posting this.

2) I could kick myself, but I forgot to take some "before" pics prior to sending them off to Woody –– they wer pretty rough-looking, believe me.

He refinished a mid 80's 10/22 receiver for me that had seen some hard use. Mine turned out excellent as well.

I live in AL also, who did you have engrave ( and who do you go to now).

I use Ident now –– very pleased with their work and will use them for all future engraving.

I don't really want to talk about who marked up these receivers because it could have been an isolated incident (I searched around afterward and didn't see any indication of it being a common issue) and they have a lot of fans here (they were recommended to me by several folks here).

Also, in their defense, I didn't complain/give them a chance to "make it right" because I was going to have these two (the worst of the ones they did for me) refinished anyway.

I got back my parts from Gulf Coast Shooting LLC. They did a great job and I am very pleased with the results.

I got the upper, lower, barrel, and buffer tube done in Magpul FDE.

Will do business with them again.

So the stock/grip/mag weren't coated, all still their original color? If so, what a great match!

No the stock, grip, mags, and rail were not coated. They match really good. Even out in the bright sunlight they look very, very close.

Heck... you may have just inspired my next project to send them.

Yeah i like it a lot. I have a pistol that needs to be refinished, and I think I am going to get it done in the same color to match my AR now.

Those look really, really nice.

Glad you found a satisfactory service provider. I don't have anything in the works now, but will definitely keep them in mind if I ever do.
