Is there any reason to keep the cardboard box that my 870 came in?

The cardboard, no. Cut the end off that has the serrial number and brand/ make/ model. File it.

Keep pistol boxes. Trash cardboard.

That's what I do as well.  I toss the rest.

I always keep the boxes anymore, just put them up and out of the way. As dumb as it may sound, many people really want the original box if you ever sell.

I'd just toss it, not like the gun is going to be a collectors item...

I kept boxes for years, but ran out of room for them. Unless it is something rare I now trash the boxes.

For an 870 throw the box, it isn't going to be worth more in future because you have the box. If it is something rare, then keep the box. Cut the end off with the serial number and keep it some where separate from the gun, just in case it gets stolen the police will know what they are looking for.

I keep the boxes. The resale is higher if you have the box and paperwork.

If you decide to sell the gun later and you have the gun priced at a point that is causing the buyer to waver. Being able to produce the original box and paperwork will often clench the sale.

When it comes to the value of firearms, the first two things that matter is if the original box and paperwork are present and if the gun has rust on it.

i always keep boxes.  If you ever sell it, they help.  Also, if you ever need to send it back to the factory it's handy to have the original box.

Agreed.

Some boxes maybe.  Not for an 870 though.

Consensus is...box goes.  I'll keep the end with the S/N though.

Smart idea for a run of the mill 870.

I say keep the box.  I have kept the box of every firearm I ever bought.  I have faithfully done this for 35 years.

Now, each and every one of those boxes has been thrown away.  But I didn't do it!

Probably a couple of thousand dollars worth of cardboard and plastic has gone into the trash.  And I still can't convince the guilty of the magnitude of their crimes.

keep it in case you need work done on it.  I have always saved boxes and just used them for this purpose this week.
