I've followed 5.56, .300, 7.62, but I have no clue on pistol suppressors.

Which are the ones to get?

.45 mainly, but open to all calibers.

Guess I should clarify, shortest, quietest, Mo Betta', etc.

Why do we even have a sub forum if we can't answer this question?

It's an easy question. Either the Silencerco Osprey 45 or the AAC Tirant 45. They are both significantly quieter than any other 45 can. You can not go wrong with either.

I started the process on one of those today. I'm biased now

This was the correct choice, as they come apart for cleaning and are quieter than the offspray.

I'm also biased... Sorry but you can't beat Silencerco as a company. Customer service is amazing.

When are your 9 and 45 cans coming out?

I'm in love with my SDN-6, but if I were buying a pistol can, it would absolutely be an Osprey. Light, short, quiet, eccentric, and unmatched customer service. I'm broke and I drool over the Osprey.

For a .45 can I'd want a take-down because then you can shoot lead.

I would say osprey first, but wouldnt buy a sealed can in a cal I'd shoot lead in.

May be a non-concern for you, so ymmv.

You cannot go wrong with either the osprey or the tirant!

In use, the tirant seems to have less first round pop.

I have extensively demo'd both cans together and they both seem to perform, to the ear,  on an equal level over a long string of fire.

It's about 50/50 on blind testing tirant v osprey with most picking the tirant as quieter on frp.

Now, the osprey is much cooler to look at and the mounts index system is a work of art.

The tirant comes apart for cleaning.

Both have pistons threaded for 9mm, 40 and .45.

In my opinion, no clear winner.  Both are great cans and both companies have great customer service!

Isn't one of the benefits of the osprey the ability to use standard height sights?

Corrrect, although it only allows a hair of the sight to be viewed.  I have one I use on a threaded 1911 with factory night sights.  I would have gone with the Tirant if I was to do it over again.  The whole indexing thing is a waste for what little sight picture you get.

The osprey still requires tall sights for optimal sight picture.

The front runners are the AAC Tirant and the SilencerCo Osprey. I'd stick with one of them. I picked the Osprey. Silencer Co is a top notch company. Great customer service. Also not owned by Freedom Group...

Very loud. They sound good when new, but once you burn out the factory installed grease they must be shot wet.
