What's the consensus on barrels to use with an M4 suppressor?

I was planning on using a 14.5 Pencil profile barrel, but all the builds I see of the "Gordon" style guns have 14.5 M4 profiles.

Is the heavier profile better in this case? Or does it not matter?

Pretty sure the M4 collar needs an M4 profile forward of the FSB.

Guys, I'm trying to remember an old setup I had. It was a a government profile Ballistic Advantage 12.5-inch barrel with carbine gas and an old FSP paired with my AEM5 but I can't remember what collar I ran. I wanna say it was the M4 collar but the barrel required zero modification from the manufacturer.

I'm retooling my '90s Delta carbine and decided it needs the AME5 instead of the NT4.

I'm hoping it's this one. My bro somehow got mine and just sent me this pic.

Depends on the spec for the barrel. I have a 12.5” BA barrel and I’m pretty sure the OD isn’t the same as a “M4” barrel. I just sent measurements to Ron and he sent the correct sized collar.

Looks similar to the one in the pic above.

The M4 to AEM5 collar used to be a standard/stocked item but barrel specs varied so widely that it became a “machined to order” thing.

The AEM5 on M4 collar has a longer .852 diameter section so I can get the taper back farther on the barrel. The standard M4 collar is around 1.47" long and the AEM5 on M4
collar is around 1.875 long.

Is it possible to machine a collar for a 12.5" 0.625 "pencil" style barrel (a Criterion Core, specifically)?

Yeah I was talking about the M4 suppressor that's a direct thread and uses the 3 piece collar.

For the AEM5 on a non SPR barrel you would be correct though.

This got me to take the plunge. Gotta finish out my Mk12-ish build.

I picked up a muzzle brake and the SPR collar. This should allow me to mount this on my WOA SPR barrel, yeah?

It should. I used a WOA barrel and ended up having to get a custom collar from Ron Allen. The stock one didn't give me enough turns for proper mounting.

ADCO still has one Sparks NV AEM5 in stock. They had 4 for awhile and when they got down to 2 I snagged one for myself.

@K31user for the Gordon collar (14.5 barrel length) did you say the minimum barrel thickness needs to be .570?

I picked up my Allen M4 suppressor (bought from TA) after an exceedingly fast seven week E Form 4 approval.  I wasn’t aware the collar/sleeve that shipped with it is a blank.  Is that correct?  Was the sleeve always intended to be machined for the barrel?  Any options other than to send this out to have machined or can I trust a local machinist to bore it out to the correct dimension?
Link Posted: 2/22/2024 9:11:13 AM EDT
[#21]
Yes, it is shipped oversized. Due to variations in barrel diameters, it needs to be matched to your barrel. According to ADCO, the front taper that interfaces with the back of the suppressor needs to be turned down too. I asked that question in the ADCO forum on here. I’d send it to them honestly. D Wilson is also highly regarded.

I was quoted $40 for the service.

Ok. I think I am going to finally bite the bullet and invest in two bolt action builds. Who is the best place for the following:

Barreled action - 5.56 - M24 Match with AEM5 no-collar profile.

Barreled action - .308 - M24 Match with AEM530 no-collar profile.

Do I need to get the barrels from one source, the actions from another, and a third place for the install and headspacing?

@bigbore is this in your wheelhouse?

Build your own. Zermatt Origin/equivalent action and then get a prefit barrel of your choice made to AE specs.

Any source for 5/8x24 AEM5/12th mode Muzzle Brakes?

I was super excited to see 30 cal AEM5s hit the market but it looks like all the brakes are gone, I found somewhere with one 1/2x28 for $200+ but no 30 cal at any price.

I’d love to finally get the can for my Mk12 in 6.5 Grendel but not if I’ll only ever be able to use it on one rifle.

I just sent some to Trajectory. Should have them by Monday or so.
I have a second CNC lathe coming in tomorrow so I will be doing a better job of keeping up on brakes soon.

Bolt gun page

Zermatt Origin Action with Southern Precision prefit. They missed the barrel taper so Ron helped turn it down and do a collar. KRG Bravo stock and Geissele trigger.

Another good value action seems to be the Mack Bros. I want to do a 8.6 bolty with their action.

I just had a savage prefit done by theurbanriflemanstore.com He machined the taper in the barrel, I think he is using wilson blanks. I got everything put together and it fit up with 7 turns.
Rws built my rem700 for my m24 and he knocked that out too. That took about 8 or so months with me supplying everything. With 169smks I got .36 group and .4 with load testing
