I am looking for a big knife that can easily be used for cutting small trees, splitting the occasional log etc.

I already have an Esse 5 and want something a little longer, a little thinner that will hold up to heavy use.

How are the Junglases?

Cold steel kukri.

This is not  a well-finished blade like some of the ones you see for hundreds of bucks.  It isn't something you will regret when you mar the blade. It's plainly meant for cutting down rainforests. It is made of VERY hard steel,
and is rather difficult to sharpen; however it holds an edge well. I have used a hand-held angle grinder, then a coarse/medium stone to sharpen it. I have the 18" model and have used it for brush clearing.

eta It's also very cheap  inexpensive; at ~ $25 or so for blade and sheath, it's a pretty good deal.

I've never owned one, but have heard good things about Woodsman's Pal.

All of the knives above and the Junglas will work well but none of them will come close to a machete... you didn't give a size range so I figured I'd through that out there, a 14" machete probably weighs less than some of them too.

If you're looking for a chopper, don't go thinner.  If you spend $210 you can get yourself a great chopper, designed as a chopper with a 11" convex blade.

This one cost more because of the handle material, but a plain black canvis Micarta handle runs around that $210 mark.  These have a life time warranty as well.

Bark River Golok

You can find a good selection of them here.  They are great people to do business with.

I've got a Cold Steel Jungle machete. Needs a quick deburring with a file out of the box, but for $35, you get one badass chopper. Down here in Texas, pretty much all we have is super tough mesquite which is torture for most choppers, but my Jungle Machete chews through it like nothing with few and very far between edge touch ups . It also makes the stereotypical "shing" noise when you draw it.
I also baton seasoned and fresh mesquite logs with it.

I like the Condor line of machetes.  I own both the golok and parang, and paid like $55 with sheath for both from amazon.

If you want something longer, check out their Thai Enep Machete...it's damn near a sword.  The Viking is probably next on my acquisition list.

who made your sheath shoulder holster?

You can get the Baldric rig at DLT as well.  The sheath came with the knife, and it's made by Sharp Shooters Leather.  I think you could have Great Lakes Leather Works make you a sheath, they do great custom work at a reasonable price too.

I hope this helps you,

Custom work is never the same, you'd have to call them to talk about pricing.   If you contact them, I think you'll find they are very reasonable with their prices.  They have excellent production sheaths that look better than some custom sheaths I've seen, and they were only $50 to $60 for a sheath for a Bark River Bravo 1.

I have used a Woodmans Pal quite a bit.
It sorta bridges the gap between a Machete, and a Hatchet. I have found it most useful. The back side circular curved blade is great for clearing thin weeds and brush when making a ground blind/firing lanes, etc.

The very end of the main blade has a flattened section that work well as a light duty hammer.

It is a very good tool, IMHO

I have a couple of these as well.   One of the newer ones and an older LTC kukri, which I like better than the new ones.

Those are some pretty knife pictures.  I'll try to get some pics of my Jungales on here tomorrow.  I have not been gentle with it.  I don't abuse, but I use it a lot.  It is amazing.  Battoning, chopping, draw knife (made a Euro style practice sword from maple), even some rough whittling.  It has not dulled.  I'm even having a hard time wearing through the finish.
