I am new to the AR15 platform and am doing my best to learn as much as I can about it. I have surfed the web, Bullet manufacturers websites, and here of course, and there seems to be conflicting info on the heaviest hunting bullet that is Mag compatible in the .223 caliber. I also have concerns about the poly tipped bulled being damaged when automatically loaded into the chamber. I'm sure this question has been asked before and I'm just not able to locate the thread.  Thanks for your help

I'm thinking a 77G SMK is the heaviest...but there are some good 64G, 62G, 69G in hunting loads..depending on what game you are looking for...check out Cor-Bon...there was a .223 hunting loads thread awhile back...

Sierra 65gr Game King, 70gr Speer, 64gr Winchester Power Point And mos Barnes X type bullets are all quote:hunting bullets.
75gr BTHP Hornady, 77gr Nosler, 77gr Sierra have been suggested as great hunting bullets by some members here. And welcome to the forum.

Have you had any better luck with any of these you've mentioned?

What about the poly tips, an trouble with damage to the tip?

Thanks again

65 gn gameking...the most accurate hunting bullet I would use on deer size game...77gn matchking or noslers will work on coyotes or varmints and are the most accurate bullets I've ever shot from an AR.

I had good luck trying out Hornady 75gr HPBT bullets this year for deer season, taking three deer from 75, 180 & 205 yds with one shot each.
I have also used 55gr V-Max bullets which have a poly tip that were very accurate, just not what I would recommend for hunting ammo.

Using Hornady 75gr T2 HPBT bullets, 23.7gr AA2230, LC cases & Rem 7 1/2 primers with an ACOG, I was averaging sub moa 5-shot groups (1.8") at 200 yds.

I've never had a problem w/ poly tipped bullets getting messed up when they chamber.  The poly is soft enough it bends, but heard enough it doesn't get messed up, unless you really jack it up.

Good shooting Dusten. Well placed shots are the key to success with .223 as a hunting cartridge. It looks like those Hornady 75's are living up to their reputation as great terminal performers.

Where are you getting the T2 bullets?

The Sierra 65gr Game King and the 64gr Winchester Power Point are the traditional bullets used for hunting with the .223.

That Swift Scirocco linked above ought to do quite nicely though.

Swift's Scirocco  75gr? No personal experience with it, but it may be worth considering.

Maybe I'm wrong but that doesn't look like a T2 to me,its a regular Hornady 75gr BTHP or T1C here at AR15.COM

As far as I know you cannot purchase T2 bullets from Hornady.

But, the longest bullet I've ever reloaded for hunting is the Barnes 70 grain, it is longer than the Hornady, Sierra, Nosler, Prvi, or Swift heavy OTMs.

I took out my micrometer and measured the length of some of the different .224 slugs I've been using just to see how long the copper Barnes TSX really is, here are the results:

Barnes TSX 70 grain - 1.040"

Hornady Match 75 grain - 0.992"

Sierra MatchKing 77 grain - 0.985

Nosler Competition 77 grain - 0.982

Barnes TSX 62 grain - 0.945

Nosler 69 grain - 0.900

Sierra 69 grain 0.890

Was able to reliably load up some 75gr AMAXs

Had to trim the brass back to 1.700 to alleviate the gap at the neck due to o-jive design though.

I have loaded up some of the Swift 75 gr. Scirroccos and they are VERY accurate out of my 1-8 twist barrels......24.0 grains of RL-15 and I get about 2600 FPS seated at 2.26 OAL.  I am sure that these would do a great job on deer and hogs, although all I have taken was a coyote at about 180 yards.....He did drop right there wich is not always the case when shot with a lesser bullet..............

I bought two K of these from an individual off the EE about 18mo ago and I remembered that they were sold as T2.  After looking at Molon's picture comparison, I believe you are right that these are likely T1C or regular 75BTHP (also based on some further reading that Hornady doesn't sell the T2 separately).  Either way, I have been happy with the results both in accuracy and terminal performance.
