I am normally not too anal about retrieving every piece of fired .223 Rem/5.56x45mm brass, but now that I starting to load 6.8 Rem for my AR-15 in field use (i.e. hog hunting at night), it will be more important to save brass in that particular caliber. So what would you recommend as a quality brass catcher for a flattop AR15 which will not hinder field use and stalking in the woods and bush at night? A picture is worth a thousand words...

I use an E&L Brass Catcher: http://www.elmfg.com/

I used a Dremel to round out the flat edges matting it to the side of my upper receiver.  It is a light weight polymer and can hold several magazines worth of spent brass.  I highly recommend this product.  I wasted money on some very subpar nylon bag type brass catchers that I would gladly sell to anyone that wants them...they absolutely suck.

I have been looking at the E&L one myself for my M1A and wondering about the fit, so I gather it works well.

it works well..but you need to get the fit exactly right using a dremel tool...not very hard to do...and it works better than any soft catcher.

I built something similar to that....yours looks better by the way....for my bench shooting....HOWEVER...the original poster implied that he needed something for a dynamic environment...maybe some run and gun on some piggies in the woods..maybe doing a little night hunting and not wanting his ejected brass spraying all over the ground.  Picking up spent brass in the woods is hard enough in the day time....almost impossible at night unless you are using thermals and picking out the hot brass...but after doing some serious hog hunting myself over the Thanksgiving week...you don't have time to look for brass if you run into 20-25 hogs and your orders are to exterminate all hogs.

The E&L setup will stay snug on your weapon as you run through the woods....it doesn't need readjusting due to weight when it is half full.  It is easy to slide off and dump into a pouch and slam back home and take off after the next pig sighting.

I use (and like) the 3BUCC brass catcher.  I bought one at Brownells.    http://www.3bucc.com/

how many rail slots do you need to mount this?

has it ever impeded with your ability to safely manipulate and fire the weapon?

got any pics of yours mounted and/or in use?

I prefer the dryflash3 model for shooting off a bench.

I have a longer upright for pistol shooting.

No, I'm not selling these.
That rocks!  Can you let us in on the basic dimensions, and especially where you found the mesh?  (I have a seamstress friend who has helped me search and that stuff is still really HARD to find!)

Way too simple.  I figured I'd need lots more of the mesh, so I've skipped over the laundry bag option.

Thanks.

I have the same type of brass catcher for bench shooting except the frame is made of PVC, it was easier to make and with the bottom tubes filled with sand it's very sturdy.

I have a couple friends that have these brass catchers and they use them just for hog hunting with their 6.8's so I know they work very well for that.

that looks promising, and seems to suit my needs exactly (i.e. hog hunting/stalking with a 6.8 SPC II)

Thanks for the idea Dryflash3.

i built one up in about a half hour and took it to the range. works great.   i had a small laundry bag i had bought for another project. never thought of using it

for a brass catcher. well here is my quick build. smaller than yours but works good.

I made this one. Didn't even glue the pipe...

Can't see how any brass catcher would be good for use while hunting. I'd say that brass lost in that venue is the cost of doing business.

Looking at it closely it appears they looked at the 3BUCC model, made it larger and its construction is flimsy, flops around in their videos and leaves an open gap where brass can escape, IMHO its a poor copy and it costs more money than the 3BUCC.

It's made so you can quickly clear malfunctions and it's keeps it from breaking if the rifle gets dropped, it also folds down when not in use to be compact unlike the bulky ulgy 3BUCC model. The guys I know that use them have both types and prefer the tactical brass recovery model in the field so I don't think it's a poor copy.

I know another guy that's making a version just like the TBR model but with a metal frame and QD mount so maybe it will appeal more to you.

I have a Tactical Brass Recovery bag for my Shrike.  It is Awesome!

Catches links and brass.  If anything is hard on a brass catcher that little beast is.
