True enough, but - it is a confusing landscape.

I had a compliance inspection in July. The 5th Circuit had struck down several of the Biden changes. My IOI told me due to this, I did not have to comply with them, and he could not enforce them. A few weeks later SCOTUS issued a stay, he called me up and said now I do have to comply with them. These cases are not over, so there will be more changes in the next year. And each month there are more and more challenges rooted from Bruen, so it will get more confusing before it gets less confusing.

I'm not an FFL. I have never handled an obliterated serial number. But you probably know that.

It seems like you had a procedure....contact ATF, turn gun over to law enforcement....is there a part in the book that says "post up a confidential transaction on the internet, complete with pictures"?

What confidential information was in the post?

the unresolved transaction itself should have stayed confidential until resolved. Not run as a play by play on the internet by arrogant know it alls.

This was a classic “I’m so smart and everyone is an idiot” thread

Heck I'm in WV but not that district so it doesn't apply to me.

It's being appealed, should be interesting. https://dockets.justia.com/docket/circuit-courts/ca4/22-4609

Aw horseshit.
The "FFL Discussions" forum is for...........FFL Discussions.
You can't point out one single reason for this thread to have "stayed confidential".
It was "resolved" the minute the OP noticed the firearm serial number had been purposely defaced. End of story.
Again,
He didn't post a damn thing that is "confidential transaction" information.
Not the name of the seller.
Not the name of shipping FFL.
Not the name of the buyer.
He posted a photo of a GUN WITH OBLITERATED SERIAL NUMBER!!!!!

You think us arrogant because WE know what the hell we are discussing? If the tone of our replies hurts your feelings, then STFO of threads where you post stupid shit. And yes, all you've done in this thread is post stupid shit.

This was a classic “I’m so smart and everyone is an idiot” thread

The fact FFLs have transactions and some are unresolved (often as simple as a DELAY) is not confidential information.

perhaps you already covered this in a prior post and I missed it, why did you get the gun? Was it for a customer or were you going to re-sell it? It looks sort of rough just from the photo.

If it is a pre-model 10 pre-1957 "hand ejector" it should have the serial #:

1. Under the barrel flat, with the letter B far out in front of the # if it was blued.  (I get it.  Barrels can be changed)
2. On the cylinder.  (you can't find a six digit #, which seems odd, unless defaced)
3. Under the ejector star.  (Again, can be changed out, but worth looking for)
4. On one grip.  Depending on how old, could be in pencil. (I get it.  Grips may not be original.)
5. Obviously, the important part for the Batfe, the frame, where you can't make it out, which is your main problem.
6. I believe there's one other area, perhaps near or on crane with a serial #? (again, part can be changed)

Did you ask the customer for the gunbroker auction #, to look at the sale ad?

Non-ffl here trying to help you out.

2 pages of drama,

as an FFL,  on the rare instance I come across something like this,
I simply contact my local ATF office,  send them a pic, and ask for guidance,

so far,  the guidance has been,  for a scrubbed and renumbered 1903 Colt,  that was renumbered in an obviously different font, was go ahead and sell,

shit happens to firearms,  not all is malicious,

"Malicious" has nothing to do with anything in this thread.
It's about the legality of complying with federal law on the possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number.

Your local ATF office gave you faulty advice. Good luck with that.

Jesus, this. The thing is like 80 years old or more and looks like it was wear, not a hipoint someone took a drill press to. A piece of paper and a pencil lead would have given you the serial.

It's a shame they didn't issue a new serial No and authorization to replace it. Oh well.

ATF quit doing that over a decade ago.
