Quoted: Argentina has/had submarines? View Quote Yes. One was attacked on the surface by helicopters from the ship in this story. ETA: HMS Brilliant claimed three Skyhawks in the Falklands as well as a submarine sunk on the surface. I’d say it’s a reasonable guess that her captain was more aggressive than most, which may account in part for the multiple attacks on marginal contacts. I’ll take a leader like that over one who gets his people killed through inaction. |

Quoted: "If you don't have a uterus, you can't comment on abortion" vibes. View Quote lol. i was expecting less "fuck them whales" and more "how could they possibly mistake a whale for a sub" posts. but yes, if you don't know shit about submarines, it's hard to have an opinion about them. different from abortion because I can read medical journals, you can't just look up most submarine stuff. |

Not the first time and won’t be the last time that wild life is killed by mistake

Wonder what the whale was thinking during all of that? If that whale probe from Star Trek shows up, we’re fucked.

Well, I guess we now know "What round for whale?"
Though I suspect not many have pondered this question. |

The Falklands really were an exercise of supply chain obstacles and how to overcome scenarios that were not in written doctrine at the time. It is quite facinating to read about. Of course the torpedoing of whales is a new piece that I had never heard of.

Other than Brilliant!, I have no comment. Actually war and the fog of war makes this seem like a non-story.

Wonder how many whales got bombed, depth charged, torpedoed, machine gunned, rammed, etc in ww2.

Like Gen Walsh, USMC’s whose call sign was Whaler Walsh because he had a preference for the larger ladies. |

Quoted: not too far off. all we really have is bearing and bearing rate as real info. then a computer/user input sets constraints and gives best guess of target course/speed/range. and refined over multiple own ship maneuvers. its like an airplane dog fight but S L O W. did you spend an entire watch ( 6 to 8 hrs) developing long distance target solutions? that would be one boring ass game. View Quote Indeed, Janes 688i was a boring-ass game. But that's awfully slow warfare for you. The Brits would have been up shit creek if Fearless/Invincible or any more of the LSLs got sunk (along with their Royal Marine cargo) by either of the diesel subs Argentina was sending out there. They certainly looked hard enough for ARA San Luis. Holy shit, was Argentina guilty of garbage timing for their adventure. |

If you read anything about the Battle of the Atlantic, this was extremely competent with green crews.
I would imagine if you haven't ever studied ASW this sounds like incompetence. Id say NBD. Im surprised anyone is even talking about it. |

Quoted: 2 inactive currently, lost one in 2017. Not sure how many they had during the war, but the Brits sank one. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: Argentina has/had submarines? 2 inactive currently, lost one in 2017. Not sure how many they had during the war, but the Brits sank one. They had three. A old one the Brits sank and two modern SSKs (German Type 209/1200), but one was undergoing repairs and not deployable. They were decent subs for the time. Some recent discussion, I assume based on declassification of the war has the operable sub ARA San Luis more active than previously believed. They conducted three attacks but unsuccessful for various reasons, the primary being errors maintaining the torps. I've read stories there might have been a dud hit on a RN ship, but I've only read that in a couple places. |

Does this mean they can add whales to their battle flag?
Shame they scrapped her. |
