.357 is a wee tiny bit bitchy. Like it can drink a lot but then later pukes in the flowers. .44 Mag is like the smoking hot chick that everyone wanted in high-school but by the time you got it you where 24 and everyone else had already been there and yeah it's strong but only because it has to lift its own fat. .41 mag though, my God. #blessed

For me, it doesn't do anything I can't do with .357 mag, .44 mag, or 10mm. If I was rich, I'd probably have a couple just for fun though.

I've always wanted a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 magnum to carry on my hip, for bear and cougars.

40s&w of revolvers
....and I kinda like 40s&w, it's just not doing anything anyone really needs past what's already available. |

My late mentor's personal 41 mag snubby is in a holster screwed to the bed on the wife's side.
She's never shot it. I bet she'd be more surprised than a home invader if she had to use it. That thing is energetic! |

View Quote Attached File I can get an 8-shot 357mag or a 6-shot 44mag. What does the 41mag offer that I can't already do with either of those? I found it cute that the 41AE was built off of the 41mag case early on. |

It's the only one of the bunch that was designed to be a Magnum handgun cartridge from the outset and is the most ballistically efficient as a result.

Fudd caliber.
And mean that only affectionately. Being a hard-core fudd myself. |

Hits a little harder than a .357 and weighs the same as a .44. Maybe not enough of positive attributes to make the cut? Both of those calibers also have little brothers for range day practice.
I get it OP. I’d buy one if ammo were readily available and someone made a 6 round 4” revolver under say 38 oz. That would make a great woods carry. There are just so many great calibers that never caught on for one reason or another. |

I own a sw model 657 6” and I have to say it’s almost a 44 magnum. I’ve loaded spicy and it’s controllable and I shoot what’s called a police 41 mag load that’s enjoyable on the hands. I shoot it more than my 629 or my super Blackhawk.

First we're talking old fashioned revolvers when that or a 1911 was the service handgun. Folks looking for power went right to a 44mag.

I don't think it had much purpose to begin with. Had it been stuffed into a medium frame early on (Taurus made one way later), it probably would have been a lot more popular from the get go.
It doesn't make sense to carry the weight of the N-frame and not just go with .44 mag instead. |

The thing that I like about .41 Mag is that it was sort of the answer to the perfect anti-personnel revolver cartridge. Even Elmer Keith in his waning years admitted that what the industry was doing with the .44 Mag was more than what he had envisioned. It was just too much for police work after years of being hot-rodded as a long range deer hunting round. The .41 Mag was/is the perfect hybrid of .357 controllability and shootability with better ballistic payload in every respect. If S&W hadn't force-fucked its K-frame to (sort of) handle the .357 I think the .41 Mag would have been a contender. Alas.....

I dunno know, I'm not a .41 magnum shooter, although I do have experience with Herter's .401 Powermag and would imagine they're similar.

Back in the 70’s & 80’s, if you went exclusively by the hottest factory loads that were available at that time using the 210 gr for .41 mag and 240 gr for .44 mag, you could actually argue that the .41 had the better edge, since the 210 grain shoots flatter and faster, and the difference in ft lbs of energy was insignificant.
I’ve hand loaded the .41 mag since the late 70’s, I like the capability of loading my “.41 Special” loads with hard cast lead and Unique powder OR hotter than factory loads but not exceeding max loads of reloading manuals with H110 and JHP or JFP. A max load with a .41 mag has slightly less perceived recoil than a max load .44 mag in identical S&W N frames, and I guarantee that a whitetail or mulie can’t tell the difference in what hit them, I’ve take several of each, and I suspect it would be the same with a black bear. I have 2 Model 58’s (4”), and a Model 57 w/8 3/8”. One of the 58’s was heavily modified before I found it. It has a bobbed hammer (DAO), converted to round butt, and the right side of the trigger guard has been “scalloped”, making it more convenient to lay your trigger finger straight alongside the trigger. It was my EDC for 2 decades, I stopped carrying it with one speed loader when I switched to a 1911 with an extra mag, just to have a few extra rounds on me. |

Gun writers who don't know a cylinder from a chamber and are bought by ad money doomed the .41 just like the 10 mm. Both of them fill a spot/need and have not gone away.

Quoted: Or just load a 240gr swc at 1000fps for the .44 View Quote Or a 230 grain SWC at 850 FPS in .45 auto-rim cases. A lot of the .41 Magnum's performance advantage was simply from being a SWC bullet at a time when most revolvers still fired round nosed bullets. A distaste for hollow points was common when the .41 was first introduced. |

The ballistic niche of 16 gauge, within the market share of revolvers.
