Buy a franchise that appeals to male nerds, and try to turn it into a “girl power” franchise. Does this surprise anyone?

According to the reports Disney paid 4 Billion for the franchise. It then spent 2.1 billion (6.1 total) to have a total earnings, not profit just the total receipts, of 2.8 Billion.
Talk about shitting the bed. |

South Park covered it succinctly,
"Put a chick in it. Make her gay." |

All they had to do was shoot Knights of the Old Republic and Thrawn films, make more toys in China, design some Legos, and cash in. The game and books were begging to be written into scripts.

And anyone who's been collecting Lego Star Wars for years now has seen their collection skyrocket in value better than most stocks. https://fortune.com/europe/2024/04/15/lego-kids-toys-industry-adult-kidult-lucrative-danish-company-sales/ |

Disney's $2.8 Billion Star Wars LOSS! |

This isn't Barstool. It's not like Disney is going to give it back to George. They have plenty of time (like, forever) to make their money.
Of course, it'll be difficult to do if they continue to tell people they're terrible for not loving how Disney has destroyed their childhood. |

On a long enough time line, it will be profitable. The Mando/Grogu movie will make serious bank if they don't woke it. Is there still a High Republic movie coming? That will do ok or potentially be awesome if they don't woke it. But again, even woke they will do good and add profits over time. The Mouse will win in the end. |

It’s not about the money or your entertainment. It’s about the message.

What the hell does the last line of the article mean by this?
The films have rediscovered the magic formula to appeal to fans but aren't yet a force to be reckoned with for investors. View Quote Not a lot of fans are liking the new Star Wars and many of their supporters are simply saying they love Star Wars without mentioning how terrible are the recent products |

South Park nailed it.
It takes true pathetic management to ruin a franchise that should be generating billions in profit without trying too hard. |

Buying "Star Wars" was still MASSIVELY profitable for Disney. The article is only taking into account box office receipts, saying just that by itself wasn't enough to cover the cost of buying Lucasfilm. Fair. However, that doesn't include all the revenue from other things like merchandising, etc.

View Quote But that wasn't enough for Kathleen Kennedy. She sees the world through classic 2nd wave feminist eyes - it's women vs. men. And women are better than men. So the female characters need to be better than the male characters to appeal to women. Female empowerment became the message, because to her, female empowerment IS the triumph of good over evil. And then they made shitty movies. Outside of the ham handed messaging, they just weren't very good. Sure, the previously developed female fans were happy, but she didn't grow the female fan base. And then blamed the male fan base for being unenlightened troglodytes for not embracing the messaging. Kathleen Kennedy owns this. And Disney let it happen, because their business strategy is to chase down small identity groups to incrementally boost their bottom line, while their hubris has them believing their current cash cows are locked in. They could have replaced her after episode 8, but were afraid to do so. May they reap what they sow. |
