So-called urban camping   when people live in RVs or vehicles parked on city streets   has risen rapidly in Bozeman, Montana, where locals are getting priced out by rising housing costs that are impacting many communities in the West.

Bozeman, located in the Rocky Mountains about 80 miles north of Yellowstone National Park, has a population of around 56,000 people. City officials say the number of Bozeman residents living in their RVs or cars spiked by 200% in two years, according to Montana PBS, which cited the city. Since 2020, the overall unhoused population has grown by 50%.

The rise in residents experiencing homelessness comes as housing costs have spiked. The median listing price for a home has gone from $669,000 at the start of 2020 to $1.2 million in 2024, according to city data. Meanwhile, rental costs in Gallatin County, where Bozeman is located, increased nearly 19% from 2019 to 2022 and continued to rise, leaving the county with the highest rents in the state.

"Homelessness has always been on the radar," Bozeman Mayor Terry Cunningham told PBS. "This   with urban camping, RVs, more cars   This is a recent phenomenon."

Though homelessness in the city has been rising since the pandemic, the increase in RVs and campers on city streets made the problem more visible, resulting in tensions over how to address it.

"First, these folks are our residents too," the city website says when discussing how it's addressing urban camping. "Many contribute to the workforce, send their kids to our local schools, and may not appear 'homeless' when you see them at their jobs and in the area."

Bozeman residents are divided over whether the city has been too lenient in addressing the issue. In some locations, the city has installed dumpsters and trash cans near areas with campers to prevent litter and provide the unhoused with a place to dispose of their garbage.

A group of local business owners sued Bozeman last fall, arguing the city was not doing enough to enforce existing laws that would prevent people from camping on public streets. Business owners say they have dealt with theft, vandalism, and instances of harassment.

Residents have also complained that some people living in their cars are not doing so out of necessity but just to save money on rent, pointing to the presence of new cars and generators on the some of the campers, PBS reported.

It can't start snowing soon enough to hide the stench.  Maybe city officials could tax the tourists more to pay for this mess since it's them and the newcomers responsible for this problem.

Don’t worry though, high cost of housing won’t effect the Welfare peeps and Illegals, as they will have government money paying for their housing costs no matter how high rent gets / increases, their food / medical / housing / apartments / hotel rooms  etc will be fully funded up until the day the federal government goes bankrupt, which isn’t that far off actually.

1.2 million as the median home price, not surprising you have a bunch of rubber tramps.

This. Every bit of this.

Doesn’t help that all the van lifers, remote workers from Silicon Valley and lest I forget… the Texans have finally started to invade.

ETA: It doesn’t help that every other thing they build around here is a damn dog park or 1-3 bedroom apartments that are used for VRBOs.

Been saying it for years because I see it in my state.

People from the northeast and west coast sell their shitboxes and move into states like Montana years ago or some southern states now and pay cash for everything.

It's artificial and they price locals out because it's not how the local economy is built and cost of living.

It's not something that can be corrected or fixed without slowing down the migration. The locals aren't going to all the sudden start making appropriate salaries

Were these people residents of the city and then got homeless, or are they homeless that moved to Bozeman?  If housing is expensive, wouldn’t it be a little costly overall, to live there?  Why don’t the homeless go somewhere else they can afford to live and get a job there?  What’s holding them to Bozeman?

A nephew just moved one town over.  His old rental lasted 15 years @$1150 a mo.  Now it's $2500.  Guess he should have save saved and bought something.  He had a good run.

I'm confused.

Are these people that DID have homes in Bozeman, but then rent went up and they couldn't afford them?   Or are these homeless people that were going to be homeless anywhere, but Bozeman is a nice place for your cousin with the truck to drop your shitbox trailer off at?

Also, why is it ALWAYS a Nissan Versa?

This will continue until some useful idiot comes up with the idea of pricing controls for living quarters. People will continue to be priced out of housing, but the benevolent government will take houses by eminent domain, because of pricing controls, and use the property to build free public housing for all. It will start with the empty nesters and work its way to sinks and dinks.

You will own nothing and be happy that someone else is taking care (poorly) of the buildings and grounds. Until the machines stop working.

If that situation was merely the result of normal people being forced out of traditional housing, there would be many more orderly camps, like a typical family campsite or a hunting camp. But every one you see is a fucking pig sty, which means they're generally populated by drug addicts.

There's hobo's on the lower 40, let's go down and fight them. Before we go though, anyone want to fight me?  If you want to fight each other, you better fight me first. Now if that's settled let's go down to the lower 40 and fight them hobo's.  We'll check the top 40 after that and fight anyone we find.
