Update on page 4. These are good!

Ordered some HDRs (Humanitarian Daily Rations) from Epidemic Proof. These are the ones given out around the world during a crisis. Has anyone tried them? Online reviews range from excellent to tasting like ass. They are 2200 calories so I figured I would give one a try tomorrow. I’ll report back but just wondering what I’m in for.

They are very hefty in size and weight. Won’t open until tomorrow.

Bought some a year or so ago.  One day son and I ate one of these and sampled a Ready hour 72 hour emergency pack.  The stew tasted like unseasoned  veggie chili.   Not good.   However my son liked the apple grape smoothie.   I thought the coco bar tasted like a tootsie roll.  We only got to the ready hour Mac and cheese which he also liked.

When are you guys pulling these out and convincing yourselves you want to eat them?

I enjoyed the Vegetable Barely Stew while getting over the flu. Just mix it with water and microwave and its like spaghettios but better. Each one has a pop tart in there as well. Not a fan of the cookies, so I throw those in the car for emergencies or toss them to a possum/raccoon

That’s a funny friggin typo

Shit, I will really be eating barely stew now, when the commissar sees this spelling error!

Fine, I'll crack one open if the OP won't

Rice with Veggies.

Added a little water, a sprinkling of the pepper flake packets and the salt/pepper packet.

Really pretty good.  No complaints other than there is only one salt/pepper packet for two entrees.  I'm going to have to order another couple cases now...

Nice. I wonder if the Rice W Veg would go well with a chicken bouillon cube or ramen packet

How many different entrees are in a box of 10? Is it like MREs where it's 12 different meals, or multiple of only a few different things?

Could be good to add to the other stuff socked away to keep the variety up.

That's a good idea. Pick up a gross of Ramen to go along with 14 cases of these things

There are 5 menus, each with an A, B & C sub menu. In a case of 10 you'll get 2 from each of the 5 menus, so there's a good bit of variety.

Luck of the draw varies.

If you're lucky you get the fig bar cases.

I've eaten pilot biscuits with peanut butter & jelly while camping in the BWCA. It wasn't the best ever but it'll make a turd and keep you moving. Maybe make some pemmican to eat with it. *Shrug*

Okay, so I ate one. I've had worse food in restaurants. I ate both entrees and sampled the rest. I put the entrees in the microwave with a little warm water for 60 seconds and they came out perfect. Only needed a little salt and pepper. I ate the lentil stew first thinking I would like it best from what I've read. It was very good and I gave it a 7/10. Next was the peas in tomato sauce. These were black eyed peas, not green peas. This one was even better than the lentil stew. 8/10. Both were honestly better than any similar dish I've eaten out of a can. The salt and pepper were a must though. Otherwise, both were a bit bland, but still fine. The pop tarts tasted like the real deal and I'm thinking these came from the actual company that makes pop tarts since the wrapper was the same foil. No frosting but they had a nice cinnamon flavor. The crackers were good with the jelly and peanut butter. The jelly was fresh and could have been made by Smuckers. The peanut butter was fine but had more of a sunflower taste. Not quite Skippy or Jiff but still recognizable as peanut butter. The oatmeal cookie was VERY good or as good as any store bought cookie. The shortbread cookie was bland but with a hint of sugar, like a store bought sugar cookie. Overall, I'm very impressed and glad I ordered four more cases. These are very filling (I was stuffed from the two entrees) and would definitely keep a guy going during SHTF. Seriously, if you're on the fence about these, don't be. They're actually good. No regrets!

Good review. Similar to my experience with them but I score maybe a bit lower.

IMHO,  the blandness is a plus if you're working hard. Heartburn from excess spice gets me, especially with carbs.

I always laugh at the tender tummy brigade. Gonna fight the boog but have to have their 3 Michelin restaurant fare to do it on.

Everything makes sense in these rations except the two sugar packets.

Are there people out there who sprinkle sugar on their sugar cookies and pop tarts?

Better to spend that money on another packet of salt or two.

How long will these things store?  Is it really 5 years from packaging or is that a best by date and they last indefinitely?

I would observe the 5 year rule if possible.

You can deep freeze them and they'll last indefinitely but the texture of the mains will go to shit.

Cool. Also a fan of the black eyed peas in tomato sauce. Its better by iteself than some $10 Backpackers Pantry meals. Not big on the oatmeal cookie though

Yeah. The oatmeal cookie is the only thing that actually tastes a little "off" to me. Not inedible at all. But there is a preservative type taste to it.

It is better with the PB smeared on it. Haven't tried smashing it up in one of the mains, yet.

They are really really thick. You can eat em straight out of the pouch.

I dare you.

Eating a whole pouch in one sitting would be a feat. They are pretty filling.
Eating two in a sitting would not bother me.

You have seen some of what I eat?

Have no problems digesting two of those hdr's.

I don't add water because I like it stewy and I only ever eat the rations out of the pouches. You've got a nice long spoon for it.

MRE Steve started the whole thing with spreading them out on a mess tray because he is showing an audience what they look like. I can see no reason to get a tray or a plate dirty if it's just me eating it.

Every ration hound should have a bunch of extra heaters saved up, but you can heat the retort pouches up quickly by dropping them in some boiling water.

It’s a really thick consistency in the pouch. Not that I wouldn’t eat it out of the pouch.
