Welcome to the "official" You Laugh You Lose (YLYL) thread. We are setting up an official thread because there have been problems with these threads in the past, in that people have posted jokes/memes that are too edgy. We totally understand that humor is subjective, and what might offend one person might be considered hilarious by another. Unfortunately, that means that we cannot tell you PRECISELY where the line is, because each joke is obviously different, and trying to come up with some explicit rule would result in a thousand rules and restrictions, and would STILL have a grey area and endless loopholes for barracks lawyers to try to weasel through in order to post as edgy a joke as possible. As a general rule, if your joke relies on racial stereotypes, or encourages violence, or is using topics like incest, harm against children or animals, genocide, etc. to be funny, then it's probably best to NOT post it. That's NOT an exhaustive list, but rather EXAMPLES of what may be over the line. As a potential rule of thumb, maybe ask yourself "would I be okay telling this joke at a family gathering?" or "would this joke be okay to send out in a work email?" - if you can definitely answer yes to those questions, then you are probably fine. (And again, this is not a rule - so please don't post a meme making a dark holocaust joke, and then defend it by saying you work at a crematorium and you and your colleagues make Jew/oven jokes all the time, so therefore it should be okay because you WOULD send this joke in a work email. Again, I am not describing a rule - I am giving an example). Ultimately, the mods/staff who oversee this thread will be following their best judgment. If they think something is "over the line" they will remove the image/joke from the thread, and they will remove the poster's ability to post in the thread. In other words, if you cross the line, you will receive a ban from the thread, and likely an account warning. (This is directly in response to members constantly telling us "Do not lock the thread - lock the violators"). This also means that the mods can definitely use your help. If you see a joke/meme that you think is over the line, please use the report button and let the mods know so they can clean it up and we can keep the thread going. Please DO NOT QUOTE a joke/meme if you think it might be over the line; doing so makes the job of the mods harder. In fact, if you see a questionable post, if you encourage your fellow member to go back and edit/delete it, it will save work for mods, and will potentially save your fellow member from being booted from the thread. This is an important point: the more you can help the mods, and the more you can police yourselves and members who might cross the line (accidentally or deliberately), the easier it will be for us to keep this thread open. Since humor is inherently subjective, you are going to have to trust the mods, if you are going to post in this thread. If you do not trust the mods to be fair, then you probably shouldn't post in the thread. I will be the Staffer overseeing this thread, and I will use my judgment (in consultation with mods and other Staff), and I will be checking it daily. The mods and I will be coordinating and communicating, to make sure we are as consistent as possible. If your goal is to share fun jokes, images and memes with others on the site, and have a good laugh, then we want you to post in this thread, and we thank you for contributing to the site. If your goal is to post dark or edgy jokes, or to try to discover EXACTLY where the line is, so you can tip-toe along it, or to try to push that line further out ... then we really prefer you refrain from posting in the thread. |

Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to me, they bid me take my place among them, in the halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live forever.

One of the programs we loaded was meant to reduce the double bounce of the keyboard. College had a DEC PDP-11/70 running the RSTS-E operating system. One semester the biology department assigned a project requiring the students to run a genetics program, which was written in BASIC. At the same time, everyone in the computer science department was trying to complete their class projects. Every dumb terminal in the college was occupied. It took 1.5 hours to login to the computer. One of my classmates in the OS class was working on his operating system project. He was in the computer lab when the phone rang. He was told to stop whatever he was doing and wait there. His code to delete files in his project OS was deleting the actual computer's OS. The entire college used that computer, he could have deleted grades, admissions or other administrative files if it continued. He got an A for his project but wasn't allowed to see his program again. |
