A couple of things. They allow you to bypass certain types of net monitoring programs that block access to "questionable content" i.e. sex, drugs, guns, rock and roll. It also puts a more "friendly" name on the logs in case your network admin happens to check. Jobrelatedstuff.com doesn't tend to throw a flag like AR15.com.

This of course only matters for work use.

It has been awhile since I try surfing ar15.com at work because we are monitored in every thing we do. Smart badges, truck monitors etc....  I could never get ar15.com or any other backdoor site to work. One day from my house I emailed  to work  one of the topics on ar15.com and when I opened the email it let me in to the topic that I had copied. May have to try again just for the fun of it.

I use an online proxy called Bango Tango. I signed up for it free at home and they sent me an email to my yahoo account. I opened the email at work and clicked on the link they sent. I log on, and Im good to go. The only thing is that it does not support java devices, nor can you sign in to sights online (forums, email etc...)  But for general surfing, the sky is the limit.
