The thread about driving got me thinking.
The Cannonball Run has been on my mind for many year's. I've always been a car guy, and do alot of driving. Lots of road trips, across several states frequently, and always try and beat my own record. Whether it's time, or fuel consumption, I strive to beat my own record. I started "collecting" cars in my teens, working at speed shops, parts stores, usually working my way up to manager. I'd find good deals on cool cars, parts, get to use the shop equipment, tools, etc. In my late teens, I'd frequently drive my 65 VW beetle, over 300 miles from L.A to Bishop on one tank (10 gallons) but take 6 or 7 hours in that bug. A few years later, when I started building & driving muscle cars and hot rods, and being young & dumb, I started setting my own records, slowly shaving off time til i'd be able to leave LA/OC @ midnight and be pulling into Bishop, CA just after 3 AM. In May 2020, the team of Arne Toman, Doug Tabutt, and Dunadel Daryoush drove a 2016 Audi S6, disguised as a Ford Taurus Police Interceptor. 2,816 miles, from New York to Los Angeles to a new Cannonball record of 25 hours and 39 minutes, averaging a speed of 113 mph. They were able to achieve that record because of good driving skills, good modifications, vehicle, police countermeasures, a team of spotters, etc. But mainly because of the Covid Lockdown and open roads. I don't know if that record will ever be broken, as they had perfect conditions. I know I'll never break it, but the Cannonball Run is one of those bucket list things I'd like to try some day. There are alot of Cannonball stories on YT to watch if your interested. Anybody here have any Cannonball stories? |

I'd be down for something like this, but I'd need a bigger bike..... Been looking at 650's lately. A KLR650, DR650, VStrom, or a Versys650 are in my future. Wife and I currently ride small dual sports, TW200's & XT250's. Not sure my butt is "iron" enough for Fl to Seattle on less than 300 cc's. I'd more likely do a TAT ride, which is something I've been researching. |

I had always had a fantasy of attempting it someday.
My only story is I was EB on i70 in IL and witnessed that Audi going WB at an estimated 150. Several months later the story was released on the Vin wiki you tube channel. Near the same time the solo record was set by a guy in a rented Mustang. Story also on vin wiki YouTube. They had perfect conditions, given the risk for only bragging rights, I’ll never make an attempt. |

When we moved, I brought the family east, flew back, then drove Seattle to Ohio in 46 hours.
Cannonball crossed my mind. With a driving partner I could have easily shaved 6 hours or so. Cannonball is 500 miles more in 20 hours less. Tough race to win |

Back in 2017, my wife's parents were about to move out of their house in Kerrville, TX, so we jumped in my truck and made a 1170 mile trip. KY, TN, AR, TX. I-65, I-40, I-30.
I was 38 and we did it over 2 days. I can't fathom doing my own cannonball run even if I had a perfect car for it. I know I said I like driving in the other thread, but unless you're paying me to do it, I will be hard pressed to volunteer for a trip such as that. |

I love all the stories/runs. Followed along during Covid as records were broken just weeks apart. But my favorite is Fred Ashmore in the rental mustang with the solo record. Guy was a beast and only missed the all time by like 16 minutes of Arnie’s time. My opinion is that we will not see these records smashed like they were during Covid. As someone who drove 400 miles home on Thursday night and 400 miles back to work every Sunday morning throughout Covid, I know what I was able to achieve. And those empty drives from early April thru about September were awesome. I remember having to adjust as traffic started coming back and how I knew that magic window was shutting for more new coast to coast records. It was the best time we will possibly ever see to be a long distance driver.

I've driven straight through a number of times from East, TX to Wyoming and it's about 18 hours. Enough for me. It's a quick 12 hour drive to the Gila in New Mexico.

A friend of mine by the name of Steve Behr actually won the Cannonball back in the day in a big ass Cadillac…Steve was a character if there ever was one…Stand up guy.I miss him hanging out around my shop. He was building a Lemans prototype car in his damn attic at his house when he passed away…Lol…Said when he finished it he was gonna cut a hole in the roof and have it lifted out…The guy was amazing.

When I got out of the Navy in 85, I rode my motorcycle from Jacksonville to Seattle on a Kawasaki LTD1000 3,747 miles . It was a great but long ass ride, especially when I got into Northern California with October winds. Once I hit Oregon it was nonstop rain up into Seattle. I rode as much as my butt and back could take, then find a cheap hotel for the night.
Left NAS Jax with a small back pack of clothes and items and a Berretta .380 Cheetah. Traveled across the lower states into and across Texas diagonally up to New Mexico. The bike broke down in Clovis NM, only shop I could find was a Harley place with a rice burner hanging in a tree. He was a super nice guy and got me going, being a Veteran I think helped here. rode through Mexico to Arizona then to California and basically followed I-5 to Seattle. I know Cool story bro, but at 22 it was a fun trip overall, met some nice people and saw some great places and scenery. |

There was a story/news article a few years ago that discussed some of the efforts taken during Cannonball Runs. Some of the details were really interesting. One thing I remember is a car disguised to look like something more benign and therefore not attract as much attention. It might have been a Merc that was Tapco'd to look like a Hyundai. Fascinating stuff.

I made a pretty impressive run in March 2020. My Dad had just died of a massive heart attack on Ft Myers Beach while on vacation with my mom. My brother and I took care of stuff for her down there and sent her home on a flight home. We made the trip back to MN from FL as stuff was shutting down around the world due to covid. We weren't sure if we were going to get stuck somewhere due to lockdowns or places like gas stations just straight up closed. We made it from Ft Myers to the Twin Cities in a Kia Optima in a stupid fast time all things considered. I should have convinced my Dad to buy an AMG.

It's always been a dream of mine to do the Cannonball Run also, we should start a build series on here and then a picture and video thread for anyone interested.
I'd love to beat the record, but it's going to be virtually impossible because of the covid runs, although I did read that they're marking the times as either during covid or non-covid times. You should have at least 2 guys to do the run but three is perfect because everyone can stay fresh. |
