We have two female German Shepherds who are usually very well behaved.  Last night I was out in the pasture and my barn cat followed me.   I did not know this at the time and the pasture is tall with all the rain we have had.  The dogs got onto something as they normally do and it turned out to be the cat. That cat was my 6 year old daughters pal and she was upset that she couldn't find her this morning before school.  At this point they are on my shit list and will be for a while.  damn dogs.

EDIT for pet cemetery

Well my barn cat was back in the barn this afternoon when I got home from the shop alive and well.  I walked out to the scene of the crime and sure enough there is a dead cat.  I never considered the possibility of another black cat getting caught out there.

Dogs sometimes do weird things, especially when in a group.

Some dogs are chill with some cats and kill on sight others.

well, good to see that the Holy German Shepard is a fuck up, after all...
condolences to your daughter, for the loss of her friend.

Don’t tell your daughter. Regardless of what type of story you have to make up. No point in her hating the dogs just for doing dog things.

I don't know man, cat probably had it coming.

Good luck with your daughter though.

Ah the age old story of dogs being dogs.

Sorry for your daughter, tough to be mad at the dogs though.

Thing is these dogs and this cat got along perfect in the barn and around the house.  I'm guessing they didn't know until it was over.

Can you get her a new indoor only cat and keep the dogs outside?
Guessing not since it was a barn cat to begin with.
Probably get a new one and train the dogs.

What is the point of the first sentence?

[#20]
Lost our cat we had for 11 years just a few days ago, it’s bothering me pretty bad. I don’t know why because it was a jerk.

My cat got killed when I was a kid, I didn’t know how I just knew it was missing. When I asked my dad where the cat was he told me it moved to Vancouver. I still missed my cat but it was a lot easier to believe the cat was just somewhere else rather then dead. Everyone has to learn about death at some point, I guess dad didn’t think that was my day to learn that lesson.

Dog owner/responsible person definitely at fault. Dogs that will attack a family pet that they know well will do the same thing to a kid.

This.

If they can't be trusted with a cat that fights back I'm definitely not trusting them with my 6 year old.

They probably thought they were protecting you from something sneaking up on you. If they couldn't visually ID the cat and went into attack mode, I can see how it would happen.

Our old GSD killed my older sister's rabbit. Got him on the neck, started seizing out. He never killed anything after that, I think he got the message by our reaction. He was just a pup, so we understood. My sis wasn't happy.

Gaslight her OP. Gaslight her hard. Go get a new cat. Doesn't matter which, just a new cat. If your daughter says "That's not my cat." Tell her yes it is. "But my cat was orange, this is black". Honey the cat was always black, your talking nonsense.

The doubt and uncertainty will scar her throughout childhood.

Did the dogs "know" the cat?  We don't have too much trouble getting cats and dogs used to each other given a little time.  If they were strangers, it's just nature taking its course and the screwup is on you.

Dude if your kid wants a pet cat, get a pet cat and keep it inside. Don't make friends with barn cats. Barn cat life is CHEAP.

That was the weirdest shit about mine. She went after ANY and all small animals like it was her job, so long as I let her. If I called her back, she obeyed, no matter how much she didn't like it.

Cats? She LOVED cats. All cats. Ours, the neighbor's, strays, any damn cat she wanted to be buddies with. Of course, she tried to initiate friendship by running at them at full tilt and then whined when they jumped the fence or went up a tree.

Had one cat around here who liked her. Spent a lot of time sleeping in her kennel with her. Has similar fur color, so we sometimes did a double-take at the dog's "tumor".

Dogs were both pups when we got them and they grew up around the cat.  Never had any issues before with them and the cat getting along either.

Serious Dogs like German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Pits, Doberman's, etc. are serious business with the potential for serious danger, particularly in pairs or more.  A 20 lb dog isn't very dangerous, a 50 lb dog needs to be watched, a 90 lb dog with high drive needs to be watched closely because it can kill things bigger than a cat before you realize its chasing.  I used to want bigger dogs, but in my middle age I'm glad we settled on standard poodles.  Big enough to be real dogs, smart, but still fluffy so they don't scare the neighbors too much when off-leash (with e-collars).  I watch two women in our neighborhood walk GSDs they have no hope of controlling if their drive really kicks in, fortunately those dogs are "generally well behaved".

Slow down a bit.  How do you train the dogs now?  Are they e-collar trained?  Are you and your wife up for that?  We finally (paid someone else to) e-collar train our current pair of dogs and it has changed our lives.  If you've never done it, it will change your understanding of what is possible.

Definitely odd, at least as far as my experience goes anyway.
Are you sure the cat was alive when they found it?
