I'm looking at getting a drop leg holster for my USP fullsize. What are some good brands, how is Blackhawk?

I never understood holsters with mag holders on them. Are you suposed to use your shooting hand to grab a mag or contort your self with your weak hand and reach the oposite side of your body?

No flame intended but, if you really need more than 13 to 15 rounds (USP45), you have far more problems than worrying about your magazine location.

Forever ago, I messed with Bianchi's UM84(?) setup, but there was no rigidity to it, so gave it up. Haven't been in the market for one since, curious to read the recommendations.

Why isn't there drop leg mag holders for pistols shooters. I've seen drop leg mag pouches for rifle magazines but not pistol mags. Is the belt pouch setup better for tactical shooting? I don't know Jack about it and would like to know the best info from people who walk the walk. It seems like drop leg would be a longer reach than belt and that could be the drawback.

Sorry if I detour your thread NightWatchman but you just might want to know this too.

It is what becomes instinct to the user. I find that a weak side leg magazine pouch(es) work fine for their intended application.
YMMV.

Have SOE make one for you - I did. Putting the mags on my belt is a pain because I like to wear my chest rig low, so I had to do something. Sorry, I don't have a dig camera, so no pics.

Edit to add:
Here is what they sell.

I didn't know they made one - I just knew they made the best stuff. So I called and said, "Make this for me" and they did. I had them make mine with Fastex, not Velcro.

Do the Eagle. I've had one that's been thru alot in 10years. Then my Son's friend bought the Eagle. It served him as "the best damn thing I brought to Iraq". He's a Marine on his 3rd tour of duty there. It survived 4 HUMVVES being blown out from under him! It fits better than any other brand and nothing failed in 18 months in the sand box.

But he as I do, love the Eagle drop holster of your choice. We have the para model with the extra strap & 2 leg straps. Me thinks it's the SAS Mk.V.

Granted, but I'm NOT going into a gun fight with just the mag in my pistol and I'd want to be able to retrieve a fresh one with my non shooting hand.

There are definitely drop leg pistol mag carriers. Blackhack has one. Safariland makes a shroud and various pouches where you can set up as you like. Bianchi has one similar.

I dont know anyone who actually uses it for mags. But on mine, its a "holster" for my M16SF "big dog" Tanto folder.

Yep. I have one for my Glock 17 and 1911. Its what we issue to our K9 officers too.

The soft Cordura holsters like Eagle, SOE, and Blackhawk make are much slower to reholster and snap down.

6004: great for offensive ops, SWAT, etc.
Not the best all around field holster.
That would be the HSGI.

And +1 for the Eagle SAS MKV.

Simple thumbsnap. No worries about a malfunctioning locking mechanism preventing you access to your sidearm....not that there are any cases of such an occurence, it just terrifies me that it could happen.

The HSGI Saddle Holster is a practically unbeatable field holster. I've tried just about everything out there and while all the name brand holster do a good job of securing the firearm, they all "flop" like crazy no matter how tightly I've cinched them down...all except my HSGI, that is.

Recently, someone married the G-Code SOC with the frame of an HSGI Saddle Holster.

That would likely be the hands down, beat all best field/urban drop leg holster on the planet. All the speed of the Safariland 6004-type holsters coupled with the "no flop factor" of the HSGGI Saddle?

Hell yeah, pilgrim.

The G-Code hybrid is a spendy beast, though. You're essentially paying for two holster: the G-Code and the HSGI Saddle.

The HSGI Saddle by itself runs $85 direct from Gene at HSGI.

I'm unsure of the exact price on the G-Code/HSGI Hybrid, but it ain't cheap.

If you're looking or a simple field holster (I.E. emphasis on weapon retention/security as opposed to CQB-style speed) then go for the HSGI Saddle.

If you have a need for speed, look into the G-Code/HSGI Hybrid.

Can't beat it with a stick.

How much elevation adjustment is there? Can you adjust the holster so the top of the weapon sits 4" or so below the bottom edge of your belt?

6004....I like the fact that I can bang the damn thing into rocks climbing through god knows what, and my firearm doesnt get a scratch. I also like the SLS system.
