NRA dead wrong in Oklahoma

The National Rifle Association has called for a boycott of ConocoPhillips because the energy company has dared to insist on its right to keep its workers safe.

Like many other employers, ConocoPhillips bars its employees from bringing firearms onto the work site, even if the weapon is kept locked in the employee's car in the workplace parking lot. It's a wise move, given that 487 people were shot to death at work in 2003, the latest year for which numbers are available. Those gunfire fatalities accounted for more than three-quarters of all the homicides on work sites that year.

However, after Weyerhauser tried to enforce its own ban, firing several of its Oklahoma employees for bringing firearms onto company property, the response was swift. At the NRA's urging, the Oklahoma Legislature passed a law to prevent employers from keeping weapons out of parking lots.

ConocoPhillips, which has about 4,000 employees in Oklahoma, challenged the law in federal court, claiming that it has the right to control what happens on its own property. No decision has been issued in the case.

The NRA, however, has already found ConocoPhillips guilty of attacking the Second Amendment right to bear arms, and it has called upon its members and supporters to boycott the company.

Houston-based ConocoPhillips responded to the boycott call by saying it "respects the rights of law-abiding citizens to own guns," and that the intent of its ban on weapons is an effort "to provide a safe and secure working environment for our employees."

That hardly warrants a protest.

In fact, if the NRA really had the interests of Americans at heart instead of its own narrow self-interest, the organization would applaud business efforts to improve work-environment safety. Its position is especially hypocritical given the organization's claim to champion safe firearms practices.
