Got a email fron USRA forwarded to me from a large wholesaler
March 31 2006 looks like they are sevetely pulling back US operations Not a huge winchester fan but still |
Or is Winchester going to be coming through another distribution channel?
Seems 70s are being overshadowed by Remmie 700s and Savages lately. But 94s are still pretty popular. 1300s may be in the same bout as 70s, just not market competitive anymore. |
The Semi-Auto shotguns are. Not these |
Sad to see. I used to work for USRA (Winchester) when they went over to the new building in the 90's. I used to love picking thru the dead rack. That was where the 2nd went that were sold to employees. I bought a super grade70 in 270 & a 7mm mag Both fine rifles. There were ond timers there who would buy a rifle per month & they worked 25+ years. Quite a retirement plan.

Gotcha |

I just called um
they told me it was true Browning will handle warranty work winchester name will continue with limited edition stuff 92s 63s etc (imported i assume ), Super xs and over unders No 94s 70s or 1300s |
I dunno. Winchester has had lots of success with its new WSM line. And they just introduced their new .325WSM. Plus, now that they've gone back to the pre-64 actions, I would think they are selling just as well, if not better, than anyone else.
Wow, you would think the 94's would be in big demand from the Cowboy shooters. Guess Uberti is hurting them.
I have a 1300 20 gauge that was my first gun. Got it from my dad about 12 years ago. Nice piece of work and reliable. Sad that the 70 and the 1300 will go, but they were not keeping up with what the market seems to be.
Knowing there will no linger be a Winchester 94 saddens me, even though I don't own one. |
I just called them and got off the phone.
Damn!!!!! It's true. Couple more damn guns I gotta buy ASAP. Sad, to say the least. ETA Better buy your American-made production guns now while you can. In a few years, there won't be any made here. |
Huge +1,the win 94 is my favorite rifle.I will ask for a new one for my birthday in Feb now |

There was an article a while ago about USRAC having union problems.
My family has been hunting exclusively with Winchesters for more than three generations (I'll admit that I strayed and bought a Remington shotgun). The last Model 70 I bought was put together poorly and they had modified some aspects of the design to streamline production. Although that one was a dog, the many other Winchesters I own are exceptional firearms. A Belgian company, which also owns FN and Browning, currently makes Winchester firearms. Almost all Winchesters, except the semi-auto shotguns and some limited editions, are still made in New Haven, CT. The maker of Winchester ammo is an entirely separate company. |
my only Winchester is a '43 M1...I guess I gotta get a 70 now
Sorry to hear that.
I wonder what will happen with the FN SPRs. They were the only USRAC model I was interested in. |
Wow, I guess that means that Winchester Firearms will be pretty much shutting down then? I was kind of expecting that when the same comany the owned Browning bought Winchester Firearms. Another Amercan icon has bit the dust.

From other thread: www.nynewsday.com/news/local/wire/connecticut/ny-bc-ct--winchesterclosing0117jan17,0,5037208.story?coll=ny-region-apconnecticut.
It looks like Olin will get back the Winchester name. Perhaps someone else will buy the factory and the rights to the Winchester name. Perhaps Norinco. |
Other than the fact (a sad one)that a gun factory is closing, I won't miss Winchester. Had two, sold both of them and never regained any interest in owning another. One was a single shot shotgun that kicked like a mule and the other was a 30.30 model 94. I'm not a pretty furniture guy, I like modern magazine or belt fed military arms with a parkerized finish.
Surely theres some FUDD out there who has the scratch to buy the place and continue its operation but I doubt there is one with the dedication. I'm surprized it wasn't/isn't considered for historical national monument status with its long history. |
Crap, I better hurry up and get that 94 Trapper in .44 mag that I've been wanting!
what about the FN guns they make..
Like the SPRs and there shotguns |
Here you go link
Hell, if they'd get out of New Haven, they could probably become profitable again.
Sending the wife over to wallymart to lay away at least one, maybe two win 94 rifles to be kept NIB.This sucks
That is bad news. I only own a couple Winchester products, one being a WWII M1 Garand and a US Govt. marked 52D target rifle. I also have a Sears M200, Winchester made copy of the 1200 pump shotgun.
I may go and make a purchase, A model 94 was supposed to be one of my 2006 purchases; might as well get one while I still can...
This is sad news for all of us that are gun nuts. I keep hearing how well the economy is doing, but I just don't see it through my eyes. With companies like Delta, GM, Delphi, Independence Air, Ithica and now Winchester just to name a few going out of business or well on the way to going under. How can the economy be doing as well as the Government experts say? Somebody is feeding us a line of crap in my opinion. I read a story every week about how some massive company is getting ready to go out of business anymore. Yes, I know many of these companies had major labor & management problems, but our manufacturing base is almost all but dead.
This sucks balls.
I have a 94 and a 1300. And I am in line to get my grandfather's 70 when he passes. The world feels a little emptier now. |
My dad has a 1939 Model 94 (or 93, I am not sure which)
It is a thing of beauty. I had planned to buy one NIB myself, like the Ranger or similar. I am not sure what to do now. Maybe nothing |
I got a trapper in 357 mag its a sweet ass gun |

It's hard to think of a niche where Winchester guns haven't been squeezed out by competitors. They sure don't show up on the retail "mart" shelves as much as Remingtons do,either.
As a tactical or target rifle, I'd rather have a Mdl700 or a 110 over a Mdl70 any day. As a hunting rifle, it usually gets beat on price points by either of the two prior,as well as the Ruger 77s. It's probably not as nice as the A-bolt, it's inhouse, but more expensive competitor. The 94 is judged inferior to the Marlin by many cowboy action shooters and hunters (myself included, though I own a 94) and there are tons of nicer old used 94s on the market. I've owned a 1300. It was a wonderful shotgun, but the Mossberg500/835/590 and 870 just plain outsell it. Other than a few niche weapons,Winchester's top brands have just been struggling for too long. It will be sad to see them go if Olin or someone else doesn't pony up and buy them. |
Seems so |
Now I have to 'splain emergency gun buyin' to the wife - get 'em while I can.
Just another price increase for my pre-64 mod 70 in 308.
But I would rather be poorer and still have them producing these fine guns though I'll be willing to bet they sell the design and the rights to the name and we will be seeing Winchesters once again, but under new ownership. |
Is it really a big suprise? I never see them talked about on here, maybe the 94 once in a while. But, there must be thousands and thousands of 94's out ther that haven't had more than a box of shells run thru them.
70's were overpriced and most just buy a 700. I never saw any reason to buy a 1300 over an 870. Were was the innovation? Oh yeah, they were run by unions and owned by euro's. |
and hopefully in a red state... |
Nostaglia makes me a little sad, but the fact is they couldn't compete.
Marlins are a better lever gun (and i own a 94). Their model 70 doesn't compare to a Tikka or a savage. The 1300 is an OK gun, but doesn't beat out the mossbergs or the remingtons. The volcanic is no more. |
and their quality has been mediocore for quite a long time but hate to see um go though |
wanted to order a few 325wsms so i'd have them in stock but i could find ZERO available in any of their model 70 offerings at my usual distributor
i settled for a pair of featherweight 300wsms and a 458 win mag but that was after alot of searching.........seems dealers are already buying them all up quite fond of my .45lc trapper, wanted a .44 mag trapper but no money |
If they had been nicer to the unions this wouldn't have happened.
It's always good to see another American corporation brought to its knees, isn't it? I suspect the local union will be celebrating another victory over their capitalist oppressors. |
I bet they move to Arizona or another gun friendly state... Would love to see a remake of the 1873, 1886 and 1895...made in the U.S. this time! |

Checked out a Kimber 8400 montana and an A-Bolt in 325. Both seemed pretty nice. The stock on the montana is very nice, but I can save about 3-400 getting the A-Bolt. That is almost the scope. Tough decision. The Winchester 70s I looked at weren't worth the time and trouble. Miroyku makes a fine gun, as well. I would like to buy American, but I am not sure the extra 400 is worth it. |
