Policy instead of orders actually.
An employee on our kitchen staff was working behind the fry side of the kitchen today and got busy. I guess he was soo busy that the Bersa Thunder in his ankle holster came loose. The gun dropped right on the floor, and he didn't realize it was there for about an hour he claims. Another employee saw the gun and freaked out. And went to the General Manager. The GM pulled the employee out of the kitchen immediately and didn't reprimand him. Instead, he left me to do the reprimand (HR Manager). He brought him in my office, told me to follow whatever corporate policy we have on weapons for this (he knows nothing about hr policy, which works to my advantage for this situation) and left my office. My company has a zero tolerance on employees carrying a concealed weapon, permit or not, and calls for immediate termination. He is a decent guy, former Marine, has 3 kids at home etc, and he makes fairly good money working for us. The poor guy looked like he was going to break down at the thought of losing his job of 5 years. And started yapping. "Please don't, I have a concealed weapon permit" and other things like that. So this is what I did: I told him, under policy he should be terminated immediately, but as an HR manager, I have authority to interperet each situation etc. I told him that since he had a concealed weapon permit (after he showed me) that I had no reason to end his employment. I told him that I understood it was an honest mistake. Then I gave him a website for milt sparks, told him to get a 1911 and a versamax II holster and don't carry on company property, leave it secured in the car. He lit up like a christmas tree knowing that I wasn't going to can him. I told him enjoy the superbowl and don't let it happen again, because I won't be able to let it slide again. My boss came in an hour later and asked me if I terminated him. I said no. "WHY NOT?! HE WAS WEARING A GUN!" I understand that, and he was well within his constitutional right to do so. (good thing he can't fire me, only corporate can) |

Someone in a mangement position that can *THINK*, *REASON* and use *SOUND JUDGEMENT*?
They need to clone your ass ASAP. |

And all this time I thought "HR" was for "inHuman Resources"...guess I'll have to stop telling everyone that.

My company also has no tolerance for firearms on company property, or in company vehicles. It was not always this way, but we had an incident a few years ago where a manager was verbally threatened, the employee was fired and while he was cleaning his stuff out of his company truck before being sent home, the manager witnessed the guy grabbing a pistol and putting it into a bag along with some other personal stuff. Immediately the company issued a no tolerance policy on firearms. In reality, not many people pay attention to the rule. The guys that carry all know who they can trust and who they can't. I told my team my views on the subject. Went something like this. Company policy is no firearms on company property or in the company vehicles. Now I consider concealed carry to be outside of the company policy. I can legally search the company trucks, computer bags, tool bags/boxes, desks and storage areas, but I cannot legally search an employees person, nor can I request that employee to do a strip search. So out of site, out of mind. |

Good on you, man. Hope you don't suffer any negative aftereffects, but you did the right thing.

Your actions are commendable sir. Thank the Marine for his service to our country.
side note: My HR mgr has CCW & advised me a bit when I aquired mine. He was careful to point out company policy regarding firearms....prohibited of course....but they can remain secured in your vehicle. Times have changed though. Years ago rules for telco installers were that you had to AT LEAST come to a full stop when shooting pheasants from your company truck. You were also required to hose down your truck if you hauled your recently killed buck on the ladder rack. Blood running down the side of a white company van conveys a bad image. |
