CAn you do some 000 buck?
I'll add this to my bookmarks I honestly have a bookmark file labeled Box O' Truth |
ty op for doing this for us. i im'd you only a week and half ago about doing this you are so quick.
so since i plan on reloading for the 20 gauge shotgun me got some new ideas. there is also a number 2 buck load for the 20 gauge. so if the number 3 buck would do that much damage i can only imagine what the number 2 buck would do. |

You betcah! www.theboxotruth.com/index.htm Go take a look sometimes. |

Great post OP.
How was the recoil difference between the two? I only own 12 guages so I have no expierence with other shotgun calibers. |
How many jugs spontaneously exploded when you racked the slide chambering a 12 ga. shell ? j/k
Great post, thanks |
well atleast now i dont feel undergunned when i use a 20 gauge for home defense use.
bad shoulder got to be careful with recoil. |
Was thinking of a 20, for my wife. She hates the 12.
Thanks to you and TMan. |
As a life long shotgunner, I'd like to throw out this out for consideration.
I have heard several people tell me that their 12ga kicks too hard and that they wanted to find a lighter 20ga. Be careful with this, as we all know heavier guns soak up more recoil. My wife is a little woman (5'4" 115#) and she won't touch my 20ga BPS Upland Special. She will, however, shoot clays all day with a 12ga 870. The worst beating I ever took was from a Franchi AL-48 in 20ga....It carried like a feather and kicked like a mule |
Thanks. The 20 Gauge is certainly less punishing regarding recoil. It makes a fine little quail gun. Not my first choice for home defense, but with the right loads, it would seem to be capable of doing the job. Of course, you never get something for nothing. Less recoil means less power delivered to the target. And, as Clint says, "I never met a man that was in a gun fight and wished he had a smaller gun. Ever." |
Your 20 gauge wasn't as effective because it wasn't a pump, you couldn't pump it and cause the water jugs to explode in fear.
Awesome. That is the exact load Mrs Goon uses. Can't wait 'till she sees this.
I pumped the 12 gauge several times. Tman felt a little dizzy, but managed to keep from fainting. |
As an aside, a Gentleman in my class last night was talking about how shotguns were better for penetration, and they wouldn't go through walls.
He changed his tune after I directed him to the Box 'O Truth website. (Predictably, he's a smart guy & a Mechanical Engineer, he knows good data when he sees it.) Made me educating him much easier, thanks, O_P! |
So....
If you had to load your 12 gauge for home defense, would you choose 00 Buck or Slugs? |
One question, did you only fire one 20 ga. slug? I'm surprised it broke up like that. You would think it would have pretty solid hitting power. I'm wondering if the break up of the round was a fluke, or a bad slug design, or what.
I'm sure that with the right slug design, a 20 ga slug would be devestating. The Velocity and mass is there. |
Well, I can tell you that I presently have mine loaded with 3 inch Magnum, 00, Plated, Remington Premier Buckshot. |
Do you want 8-9 .33" holes, or one 3/4" hole? Personally, I'd load buck. (I think 00 is .33... Just off the top of my head, could be wrong.) |
We shot 2 of the 20 Gauge Slugs. The first one blew the bottom out of the Waterbox, due to my aiming too low. It broke up badly. The second one centered the jugs just fine, but also broke up badly. Like you, I expected more. But I just report what I see.....not what I "think". |
Holy 3-inch Magnums, Batman! I guess old_Painless doesn't agree with the 'reduced recoil' theory. Hell, niether do I, but I stock 2-3/4" magnums. |

We all look forward to your posts, always educational and enlightening. Fact, over fiction! Oh, and kudos to your camera man. He too does and excellent job capturing 'the truth'! |
Without a doubt....no one else's are even close. It's great when Yoda takes time out to teach us real life stuff. Great job, O_P! HH |

The box o' truth is even painted.
You, sir, are a true professional! |
000 Buck here in my 12Gauge. |

Bad slug design then, I'd say. Just putting up some quick figures, Federal's (I know you used Remington, but Federal's what I found on Google) 20 ga slug is 3/4 oz (~330 grains) and moving at 1600 FPS. It's also going to be ~.614" across. Just a solid block of lead ought to do the job pretty well there. The Remington HP slug you used broke up, which means it was probably expanding too fast. That could be due to the water, or bad design (my pick). I think that with a good slug design, 20 ga slugs would be an awfully good stopper. The next question is, of course, what's a good slug? That we don't know yet. |

Yessir, them water jugs are FUBAR now! Good post as always, Thx. Don
Painless: FWIW I have taken several deer with that same load. Very devastating to the vitals (all of them!). All shots have been made between 30yrds to 45yrds and all the deer dropped without taking more than one step. I always look forward to your posts, thank you. |

Ah, the Dick Cheney HD load. |
Great post! When the "birdshot as a defensive load" discussions come up (and they will, it never ends) I'll have yet another link for reference. To me, this confirms what I always thought was common sense. Sure enough though, somebody is using birdshot on their shottie while not hunting quail, will read this and say "Ya, but..."
I was a little suprised by the slug results. As always, it's not what you "know" or think, it what's you observe. Nice job, as always. |
Awesome as usual Old_Painless, I love the BOX O' TRUTH!
O_P FOR PRESIDENT |
