US says launches biggest air assault in Iraq
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Thursday it had launched its biggest air offensive in Iraq since the 2003 invasion of the country. A military statement said the operation involving more than 50 aircraft and 1,500 Iraqi and U.S. troops as well as 200 tactical vehicles targeted suspected insurgents operating area near the town of Samarra, 100 km (60 miles) north of Baghdad. ETA: The statement said "Operation Swarmer" was launched on Thursday morning and is "expected to continue for several days as a thorough search of the objective area is conducted." Samarra was the site of a bombing attack last month on a Shi'ite shrine that set off sectarian reprisals and pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war. |

See ya, wouldn't want to be ya. ( hajii ) I wonder how many dead terrorists will be reported by the media as innocent members of "large wedding parties" ? |
|
|
Iraq, not Iran. I thought the same thing when I saw this thread. Wishful thinking. |

It will probably make the news tonight and out line the entire plan. Got to love the mass media

There's always tomorrow. |

I wish. I don't see there being sufficient popular support for taking care of Iran before the end of Bush's term. I am not sure we have the ground troops to handle both at the same time either. Sorry for the hi-jack. |

we could fix that by just nuking the place and vaporizing everybody. Saves time, saves body bags, nothing for the media to see... |

My thoughts and prayers go out to everybody. I just heard on FNC little bit ago they found a huge cache of guns, ammo, military uniforms, etc. Would be nice if we stumbled across OBL Just my opinion. |

US says launches biggest air assault in Iraq Thu Mar 16, 2006 11:23 AM ET BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Thursday it launched its biggest air offensive in Iraq since the 2003 invasion to root out insurgents near a town where recent violence raised fears of civil war. A military statement said the operation involving more than 50 aircraft and 1,500 Iraqi and U.S. troops as well as 200 tactical vehicles targeted suspected insurgents operating near the town of Samarra, 100 km (60 miles) north of Baghdad. The statement said "Operation Swarmer" was launched on Thursday morning and is "expected to continue for several days as a thorough search of the objective area is conducted". Samarra was the site of a bombing attack last month on a Shi'ite shrine that set off sectarian reprisals and pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war. "Initial reports from the objective area indicate that a number of enemy weapons caches have been captured, containing artillery shells, explosives, IED-(bomb) making materials, and military uniforms," said the statement. The U.S. military has launched several major offensives against Sunni Arab insurgents, including one that captured the former rebel stronghold of Falluja, and a series of assaults in the rebel heartland in western Iraq's Anbar province. But the crackdowns have failed to ease a raging guerrilla campaign that has killed thousands of U.S. soldiers, Iraqi security forces and civilians. |

Yep.. they said it's the 101st Airborne Div and Ground Units |
|
|
Anyone thought about this?
They might have been tipped off that the man Zarqawi himself was in the area. Surrounded it, and are gonna pound it to hell. seems like for such a massive strike they might have a good reason to bring in everything. |
|
Very true. Media may not see much but they would surely make a point to do the bashing on it. The way I look the situation, we came, we saw, we solved the problem. Can't be much more clear than that. |

probably nothing new that we haven't seen already posted today of the staging areas. It seems more and more journalists are just staying in the Green Zone. So we'll get a report most likely of what went down and that's about it. |
