after years of research and testing I have came up with the 3 best SHTF pistols,
#1 G-17, concealable, light, 9mm (easy to get ammo) holds a mess of rounds very easy to keep up and running #2 Ruger GP 100 4" bbl, heavy but very reliable, can shoot .357 and also the most common round in the USA the .38spec. good stopper with .357. #3 full size 1911, concealable (slim frame), great stopper with FMJ, reliable, accurate mags and parts are everywhere. |
Congratulations on merging SHTF, 1911 vs Glock, and 9mm vs 45 ACP all in one topic!

I'd go with the glock. Millions of them in circulation, so spare parts are plentiful. Ammo is everywhere and inexpensive. The damn things last forever. Hell one guy on the board TRIED to destroy his and it still worked. Get a couple dozen 17 and 33 rnd mags and a couple thouseand rounds and you will be ready.
I would take a Smith & Wesson 686-4 with a 4 inch barrel over the Ruger.
So on the Glock, no SHTF would be prolonged enough to where you were shooting cast lead reloads at some point I guess? Like a TEOTWAWKI.
+1 I have a G21, thinking about adding a G30 or maybe another 21 to the "locker" |
LOL, I own all 3. |
That's a good point. If it goes on that long, the glock will not work so good. Get an aftermarket barrel with standard rifling... |
+1 I guess if one was worried about it going on that long you'd want a spare bbl anyway. |

To solve to SHTF pistol, 1911 vs glock, 9mm vs 45acp, revolver vs auto, capacity vs stopping power, reliability and availability of parts arguments all at once......
and in keeping with true ARF.com fashion.... BRING EM ALL!!! plus your centerfire rifle... plus detachable CQB sight and long range riflescope for said centerfire rifle... plus your shotgun... plus an extra barrel for said shotgun to go from hunting to tactical mode... plus various types of birshot, buckshot, and slugs for any situation... plus a .22 rifle with subsonic ammo for quiet small game hunting... plus method of carrying ammo for all above weapons... plus ubertactical multi fuction knives... plus nightvision equipment for tactical nighttime movement and/or hunting... plus flashlights in multiple colors for tactical communications with other ARF.commers plus batteries... plus food and water... plus medical kit... plus beer... am i missing anything??? feel free to add... |
I wouldn't be dissapointed with either, i choose the 1911 because I shoot it better and like its size and balance. Plus with 10rd 1911 mags the glock really doesn't hold that many more rounds. |
Katana Pulse plasma rifle in the 45 watt range. Lots and lots of D cell batteries. |
seriously, glock 21 with some 15 round mags would be top pick in my book.
to bad I sold both of mine... now my kel-tec 3AT is my SHTF pistol... my ak pistol is for TEOTWAWKI |
Ditch the Glock for a Browning HiPower, change the 4" GP100 to a 2" snubnose, and the 1911 to Commander length and you have my 3. Before everyone jumps on my ass about being a glock hater, I have nothing against them, they work I''ll admit that, I just dont care for them.
Switch the Glock for a Sig 226 with 17 rd MecGar mags and substitute more 9mm mags for the 1911 and your in business
What about the Medusa model 47 revolver? Shoot .38 special, .357 magnum, 9x19, .380ACP, and a couple of others; can't shoot 9x18 Makarov though because that bullet is slightly larger. But it gives you an incredible range of options; between .38 and 9x19, seems like finding ammo shouldn't be a problem.
I agree with the glock 17 and a steel framed 5" .45ACP 1911A1 as being long term relieble pistols. however i shot a Ruger GP100 to pieces in less than 4 years. It required regular trips back to ruger for warranty repairs. recut forcing cone, replace clynder crane, replace cylender.
No, because in true arfcom fashion, you would stockpile billions of rounds of Gucci ubertactical ammo... because no ammunition is good enough. |
In examining the common police serice weapons some clear trends have come up. One is that a steel frame 5' .45ACP 1911A1, Browning HP, Steel frame S&W 3rd Gen 40SW and Glock 17 will all last a very long time. usually over 50K. the Sig P226 usually cracks the frame by 26K. |
Ruger .22. If I need more firepower, that's what the AR and AK are for.
Don't forget, he threw in a Ruger for the "Bill Ruger supported the AWB and I'll never buy a Ruger" crowd! Hell, that might even get the Mini-14 dragged into it! |
Oh, and BTW, any pistol is the best SHTF pistol, as long as it's made by Sig Sauer!*
*and it's not called "Mosquito". |
Most definitely, the Ruger, IMHO, doesnt' even come close the the 686 |
wow thats too bad, I really didn't think it was possible to break a ruger revolver... anyone else have problems with the GP 100? |
No one I know. It could happen though. No gun is indestructable. |

Phillips & Rodgers Medusa 47 for the SHTF win! I can use 9mm, .38, .357, and two dozen others calibers. At the same time. I call that a true SHTF revolver.
More: www.popularmechanics.com/outdoors/firearms/1277301.html It's a bloody shame that they were discontinued. Suckers went for $600 flat as recently as 4 years ago. Today, if you can find one, expect to pay over $2000. |
Funny, I checked GunsAmerica: $2200. I also checked GunBroker: $700 buy it now. |
Meh, can't help it:
Minus the shitty receiver cover weaver mount, I like that! |
There ain't no beamz on that, foo! Dis got beamz. |
The Birdman Nuke 50, if you can find one, is the ultimate SHTF pistol.

+1 The two best SHTF pistols are: Springfield XD9 Tactical. Accurate, reliable, 5" barrel for added velocity and controllability when firing. Oh yeah, and I have one. Colt Delta Gold Cup. Accurate and powerful enough to be used for hunting medium sized game, and does well with two legged varmints to boot. Stainless steel construction resists corrosion. Oh yeah, and I have one. The best weapons for SHTF are the ones that you have RFN and have practiced on. |

You have lit the flame to which the moth will follow. |

Does anybody buy guns on GunsAmerica? |
