Since this weekend is going to SUCK (weddings, babysitting, housework, etc.), I determined that I better get my weekly shooting trip out of the way last night while I had the chance. I decided to pit my recently acquired M1 and Mosin Nagant against each other and take some pics of the results. I have multiple distance spots set up at my ‘range’ for practice, and I decided to use the (all estimated) 70 yard, 130+ yard, and 90 yard, respectively. So, here are the results. M1 vs. Mosin (I know, shady pic. my apologies)  The target was four 8.5x11” sheets which I estimated to be roughly the size of an average German’s chest. I aimed for the heart for each firing sequence.   First with the Mosin @ my 70 yard spot (5 shots)  Shot the darn thumbtack  Now, 4 shots with the M1 (to even up the 8-round clip)  Not bad  Now, at 130+ yards with the Mosin  Last two shots were off the target. It was then I realized that my front sight post was bent. I corrected it with my pocket knife.  M1 with four shots  I can attest to one being a flyer due to me jerking  Now, 7 shots from the M1 at 90 yards  I honestly don’t know why there were only 7 rounds. I only found 7 empty shells too (I reload) so I know it wasn’t just a flyer.   Now, 5 rounds of the special low-recoil target practice ammo from the Mosin  One hurtin’ German  And that’s a wrap!  |

Thats not exactly a fair comparison. The Garand is a Semi-auto that kicks ass. The Mosin is from 1891! And you probably used "maxim machine gun" rounds to shoot in her. Most people dont realise that most 7.62x54r in the US is meant for other guns and NOT the Mosin-nagant. Still cool though, The mosin did a lot better than i expected. |

That's why I love my Finnish M39. Heavy barreled SOB, and even with the "heavy ball" stuff it was designed for and shoots so well (well, 3 inch groups at 100 meters ain't "bad"), it doesn't punish one quite so much. My tiny little M38 Ruskie, on the other hand, beats the everliving shit out of the user. I've had good accuracy with those practice rounds too. Kind of neat stuff, kicks less than a 7.62x39 to my mind. |
Despite its age, the Czech stuff is supposed to be accurate.
