 This will not end well. FWIW i prefer 45 ACP because it operates at a lower pressure than 9mm or .40S&W and will generally wear out parts less. |

+1 Similar penetration and secondary wound canals. If you want something that is clearly 'better' you need 10mm Auto. Its a beast of a round, with 2 or 3 inches more penetration, and the secondary wound canal is far bigger. |

This is true. 10mm Auto is better than all of the other options, IMO. It's a shame people are too wimpy to actually use it. I wouldn't feel undergunned with 9mm or .45 ACP, even though I prefer 9mm, though. Only round I wouldn't use is .40 Short & Wimpy, because it's literally 10mm Auto for girls. |

Personally? Capacity. With a Glock 17 I can carry my pistol and one spare mag and have 35 rounds of ammo. Take into account that something like 40% of all lethal engagements involve more than one attacker and the need for capacity goes up again (in my opinion). Like the man said, I don't want to get killed for lack of shooting back! |

I really wish there were more options for 10mm, gun-wise. I already reload pistol ammo, so it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Im kind of interested in the new Vltor version of the Bren Ten.... Wonder how it'll hold up.

You got it. My M9 can hold 17+1. By the time I reload a second time, a 1911 has reloaded five times. That's a lot of lost combat time, even if .45 is a good round. |

Sooooo, your aim sucks? j/kI just wanted to be in my first .45 vs 9mm thread. BTW: I shoot my 1911 better than any other gun I've owned, accuracy wise. I say it depends on your scenario. Carjacker at my window? .45 to the face works quite well. Home invader? Well, .45 close range works good too. Hordes of zombies? .45 to the head works great.... Damnit, I see a patern

Neither is so much better than the other to rule out either being the winner. And overall a well-placed round with one is so significantly better at doing its job than an ill-placed round by the other, that the whole discussion is simply silly. It is clear that the 45 makes bigger holes in "things" It is clear the 9mm has more rounds available. Juries will look poorly on having to "double-tap" Combat has little to do with everyday self defense What makes you thing opinions mean anything? |

No offense, but I dismiss this argument. If I get into a situation where I have to use a firearm against another person in defense of my life or another person's life then I am going to keep shooting until the threat is no longer a threat. If it makes it to the jury then you've got other problems. Unless you finish off an attacker after they threat has been neutralized then your probably never going to have to face a jury. At least not a criminal jury. Also, keep in mind that the jury is going to be made up of 12 people who may very well put themselves in your shoes, standing in that gas station with an armed robber waving a pistol around. |

I think on pure merit 10mm is the best pistol round available, but there are unfortunate logistic issues with that choice. However, when it's all said and done, I think they're all pretty close... and they all suck compared to a rifle.
I carry a 9mm FWIW. |
