Southeast survival forum hike

Ok folks here we go again.

Location-

Central florida, Ocala national Forest. Florida trail

Dates- Mid March. Est. dates are the 18-20th. The exact dates will be updated in the next few days/week.

Distance- total 10-24

Terrain- Sand scrub,pine flats,oak hammocks

Weather- Right Now expect anything from 90f to 30f avg for that time is 50-72f.

about-
The hike will start at juniper springs and continue on the FT. There are several camping areas we will be able to use during the trip, the majority with water sources near by. Base camp is normally at the midway point and manned by a team of folks that know the AO , and are like minded. This also allows for people to stop by and meet/greet others from their AO, or to day hike in or out to the main hiking group as they wish. In other words people can come and go as they want, or camp as they want ( car camp/hike).

Base camp location will be posted once the exact trail plan is laid out.

There is no other requirements. Just make sure you have your gear sqaured away and are ready to walk! These hikes are very easy, there is no set pace, no speed, nothing crazy. We have a wide varity of folks that attend these gatherings. From teenagers to senior citizens to wives/gril friends.

Here is some FAQ that seems to come up alot-

is there a water source- Yes. Bring a filter or tablets, as on trail its in the form of lakes, rivers, marsh

Where can we park ,is it secured- Yes parking at juniper is secured but will cost a day use fee. This will be posted once i update(it has chnged 3 times since last years) but avgs between 5-10$ per car.

Can i bring my kids- yes, but remember we will be walking close to 5-10 miles the 1st day. Be considerate of the other hikers, this is why there is the base camp, day hike options.

do you know the way-

Yes. I have been hosting survival hikes twice a year in the ONF since 2003, most of the base campers know the AO very well, as do several of the core hikers. If we get lost its because we got sucked into a worm hole or black hole and spit out in la la land.

What kind of gear should i have-

food, water and shelter. A water filter and tablets is a must(if all you have is tablets im sure someone will loan a filter if need be), decent sleep gear plan on 40f. Good shoes, and socks. Food, of your choice. Backpack of your choice.

Are firearms allowed-

This is my take on it and how i will conduct this camp. Follow all state, local and federal laws for the AO that this hike is being done at. No gun play. Agian, follow the law. But use commonsense to ensure your safety. Not to sound harsh, but waving around your new desert eagle and being unsafe may lend you to be hiking alone real fast ! I dont tolerate stupidity with firearms at my events. If you want range time there is a range on FR88, your welcome to use it. To be short, KNOW the law, follow it and remember this IS NOT a full battle rattle type of event!

If anyone has any other questions please post them up or contact me via IM/PM?email

I will update base camp info and dates once they are set in stone.

er............the range has not moved, but the name of the road it is on has changed.      Now the Forest Service calls it FR 11.

I'll be part of the base camp support group.  As I enter my dotage, I keep in mind the old saying: "we can't all be athletes, but we can all be athletic supporters".

In other words, we do what we can to help the cause.

............I'll bring the beer

Seems we Virginians need to start our own gatherings as we seem to be just too far from both the NE and SE get togethers.

Have fun guys.

Dates don't work for us.  If they happen to change to an April date you'll have few more Georgia boys join you.  Past trips look awesome.

UPDATE-

The dates are 18-20th for base campers.

The hike will be the 19th and 20th ( sat - Sunday)

Base camp will be at hopkins prairie , we will start at Juniper springs .

Hopkins charges a fee ( irrc 5$ a night) and juniper is between 5-10$ per car per day- for secured parking.

comms- info will be posted the few days before for the 2m freq,CB and FRS/GRMS channels

We will hit trail prior to 9am. gates open at 8am. The sooner we hit trail the sooner we get to base camp.

Total distance one way is 12.5 miles.

Sunday AM hikers will have the choice of packing up and hiking out the 2.5 miles to be ferried back to juniper or a secondary point making sundays walk 5 miles( 3 hours est. walk time), o r staying in camp and being dropped of by the base campers as they leave.

Im doing this so as a group we can all decide what we wish to do on sunday and to allow day hikers a chance to shake down gear as well.

If by chance we dont make hopkins , there is a suitable camp spot at the 5 and 8 mile marks. Again. The trail is easy, and this hike is for everyone.

YOU WONT BE LEFT ALONE.we set camp as group no matter what and no matter what distance. THAT is why we have our awesome base campers to help us out if need be!!!!

If you plan to hike please RSVP here, or email me. This way we expect you on sat AM.

If y our base camping as well RSVP here so the guys will know to look for you.
hope to see some new faces and the old ones.

That's some kind of lame-o excuse, sir. I think by "Something going on" you mean "Sleeping until 1pm and then playing with my stove collection"....

If only! The collection has grown. Added them up yesterday and I now have an even dozen types (with a couple of dupes) not counting what I've built.

hahaha. Z won't be joining us this year. Despite buying all new ninja hiking gear to replace his.... well lack there of. Shame too, dude has dropped 15-20lbs and is in decent shape now. Though in the future hopefully he will be more prone to listen when people tell him to change his socks. Anyone still have pics of his half dollar sized blisters?

On a side note protus, I know Saber has emailed you about our situation. are we starting and ending the hike from the exact same locals?

i gave him some ideas but have to really look at the maps . most of the distances would put you guys either passing us or meeting us and turning around to just head right back,, ive just been busy with work and my little ones bday plans,

Z is young he'll catch up ;p...when i was that age..i used to walk with a med alice that musta weighed 80lbs while wearing old school jungle boots and cheap cotton socks...... tell him he has it lucky to have all the ninja gear....we didnt have that stuff back when i started hiking LOL

dont worry ill be the slow guy this round. im still not 100% on my broke, snapped, mangled foot. i'll let ya younger guys carry me out

So what you're saying is,  In true SF style we will have to fashion a litter out of ponchos and sticks to haul your butt out? Well that might be entertaining!

I'm just teasing of course. I'll do a little bit of map reading and see what i can put together for us. We would like o hook up with y'all the day y'all start, which might mean some very creative hiking plans.

well like i was saying.

It depends on the distance you want per day.

wanna do 10 miles per day or 15 or 20?

there is trail heads about every 8-12 miles.

i cant vouch  for any trail intel on the south end  of where we start.

Am I gathering this to be Juniper to Hidden Pond on Sat and Sat to Hopkins on Sun with an optional pickup at FR10 for those not wanting to go all the way to Hopkins?

My event on Sat should be over around noon so I'd be able to hit Juniper around 2 or 2:30. I haven't bounced this off the spousal unit yet but it might be possible. Hate to miss it even if I'm running hours behind.
